So has Michael Bay or MIchael Bay's visual style provide an inspiration for your own video projects? Whether you're a film school student or making a home video project for your own pleasure or doing a school presentation, etc. have you decided to let the Bay's style influence the way your video turned out?

about 9 years ago I was in college studying Hopitality Administration (hotel and restaurant management). And one of the courses (I forgot which one, probably Marketing) required us to make a presentation. So while all the other groups decided to present Live in person doing a lecture style presentation, I decided to make a video.

I actually used alot of Bay's techniques with the panning. And cut really fast. The camera was never still and even if it was, it would be a still shot for no more than 1.5 seconds before it cut to the next shot. And then in the background music, I incorporated Trevor Rabin's score from Armageddon. His score made the video more exciting than it actually would've been had it been made without any background music. Hehe

Anyways, so did anyone else make a video inspired by Bay's style?

I wish I could!

I do have some poor-man's Bay ideas, though:

1) Set your cam-corder angled up on a few 2x4 boards on a skateboard for a low-rolling side dolly shot (or use a wheelchair, a la Robert Rodriguez);

2) Tape your camcorder to the front driver's side of your car, facing you, as you make a 'high speed' left turn;

3) Have a friend cam you from another car (from the side) at high speed on the interstate;

4) Roll a low cam toward someone as they walk directly toward you;

5) Shoot extreme close-ups (frame eyebrows to mouth) from a slight angle.

Some of those could be fun and maybe work a little, huh? Never really studied cinematography, just some ideas I've had...

If I didnt already spend so many damned years in college I would so go back and learn film making concentrating on what I like about my favorites, Bay being right up there.

I am a sequential artist but I must say since becoming a member of this board, Bay has taught me a thing or two about pacing.

Every filmmaker has that film that really pushed them over the top to start making films and for me it was Bad Boys... After seeing that film, I was like DAMN this is what a movie should be...exciting, funny, smart and of course entertaining.

Well it took sometime and in 2002 I decided to become a filmmaker... I got a late start but here is the result...

my first interview as a fimmaker I gave a shout out to Michael Bay (toward the middle)...

I saw Transformers on opening day and it was amazing. I just can't wait till the day Michael and I can collaborate on a film.

He's not my main source (Mann is) but I do use some Bay techniques, or try to, when I approach my shorts.

I don't work in the movie business :(

But Michael is still some sort of inspiration, whenever I shoot some fun clips, as a hobby.

Here is a small clip featuring my Knight Rider Replica :lol: We shot it in 2 hours with your average family camcorder and edited it on Window Movie Maker :oops: It is pretty basic but you will maybe feel Bay's influence in some shots. Plus, watch out for an "homage" to Mikaela in Transformers :lol: :lol:

Grant you, these are just tests, I was learning the software so there not very good. But it is Bay inspired, at least the first video.

I am workin on a short film right now called Luna, to say the least, it's Armageddon, The Rock, Pearl Harbor (dog fights), and Transformers all rolled into one.

:wink:
