Hi everyone!
Thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself to the crowd. First things first - I'm from Munich (as in capitol of Bavaria), so please don't judge my English too harshly. Let me assure you, my German is way better
The name's Marc, I'm 33 years old, work as a journalist and simply love the movies. I enjoy arthouse-fare as much as mainstream cinema and just to give you an idea of my (sometimes very peculiar) taste, here’s a small roundup:
Favorite movie: Couldn't name a single one, spontaneously titles like “The Godfather”, “The Empire strikes back”, “Robocop”, “Jaws”, “Die Hard”, “Das Boot”, “La vita è bella”, “American Beauty”, “Sideways” or “Million Dollar Baby” come to mind. Oh, and in the “completely mindless fun” section, movies like “True Lies” or “Armageddon” really stand out. Recent favorites include “Munich”, “Jarhead” and “Syriana”.
Worst movie: Well, I’m pretty sure there’s a bunch of turkeys I will never see. And as with my favorites, there’s not a single movie at which I could shake my fist as being THE worst. And more often than not, the degree to which I resent a movie will be directly related to the expectations or hopes I had before watching it. That being said, here are some movies that I really wish I hadn’t wasted my time with: “X-Men: The Last Stand”, “Star Wars: Episode III”, “Meet Joe Black”, “Troy”, “Siegfried” (or just about any other recent German comedy for that matter, these things are just atrocious. Their Austrian counterparts however rule

), “Blade: Trinity”, “Bowling for Columbine”, “Fahrenheit 9/11”.
Favorite videogame: “Knights of the Old Republic”, “Halo”, “Jade Empire”, “The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion”, “Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter”, “Shenmue II”, “Parasite Eve”, to name but a few.
Well, although I wouldn’t call Michael Bay my favourite director (again, there’s no one I could single out), I really enjoyed his entire work so far (well, “Pearl Harbor” could have benefited from being close to two hours shorter…) and am very much looking forward to “Transformers”. So just to cap it off, some quick thoughts on all things “Bay”:
Bad Boys: Way above average, a pretty decent surprise when I first watched it. And thank God for the SpecialEd.-DVD that provides a music-only track. I dig the opening theme.
The Rock: Whoa! Slow down on the editing! Other than that a great ride that truly benefits from the presence of Sir Sean Connery.
Armageddon: Although this is cut even faster (I’m pretty sure this is NOT the right way to put it, would someone be so nice as to suggest a correct term for what I mean? ) than “The Rock”, it didn’t bother me as much. Truth be told this is one of my most beloved guilty pleasures. “Armageddon” simply rocks. Great cast (Even Affleck is likeable here), great effects, tons of humor. And Kudos to Michael Bay for the Audio Commentary (which, by the way, has been omitted for the German version…) on the Criterion DVD. I can’t remember if it was Bay himself, who, amongst other things, admitted that the ridiculously large gun on the lunar vehicle was requested by a toy manufacturer. But even if not, the honesty with which the filmmakers spoke about the movie remains unparalleled.
Pearl Harbor: Sorry, but this one’s as close to a dud as Bay is likely to come up with. The attack on Oahu is visually stunning, just about everything else falls flat. Hope I don’t break any forum guidelines with such criticism…
Bad Boys II: The comedy didn’t work for me, so some scenes felt a little stretched out. Apart from that, a great action movie that’s just a tad too long.
The Island: Severly underrated in my opinion. Minor gripes like annoying product placement aside (although I must admit, the Chanel-campaign was cleverly integrated) this is one of those rare instances where explosive action is accompanied by a story that really holds up on its own. Shame they didn’t give this one the “Special Edition” DVD treatment.
Well, that’s it for the moment. Thank you, Michael Bay, for many hours of fun, more of which are hopefully to follow on 7-4-7.
