Paul Verhoeven's Robocp (1987) was one of my favorite movies. A few years ago the talk of a reboot started in Hollywood and Darren Aronofsky was supposed to direct it. Indeed a strange decision although I love Daren's movies. Then the financial problems for MGM started and the movie was put on hold. Also Darren moved away from the project.
Now the talks are renewed and it's very probable that the movie will hit theaters in 2013. Again the decision who will direct it is a strange one but I think it could work well. It's the Brazilian Jose Padilha. I think he has a great skill and a unique vision. Here is a trailer of his most famous film Elite Squad.
About the male lead, first MGM were considering Johny Depp, Keanu Reevs and Tom Cruise which I think are bad choices indeed. Now they're considering Chris Pyne, not the best actor but still could work, although he is pretty young compared to Peter Weller. I guess MGM will take the franchise to a completely different direction. I'm anxious to see what will happen.
Here is the Screenrant article about the latest updates for the movie.
