He was killed by Shockwave in the comic books. But as we know Michael doesn't give a shit about the comics, that's way it's indeed a strange thing not to use a great concept and CGI that you already have. IIRC GM were promoting a new Volt at the time of the filming and maybe there were some problems with the old one.

I thought Jolt was going to join the fight, but I suppose someone decided not to. I remember Nelson saying he wasn't in TF3 which made me a bit sad.
Speaking roles could've brought more Jolt fans. With weapons as powerful as Jolts, I'm sure Optimus would have gotten more time to save the day.
