It was, but less than ROTF made in its midnight showings, and ROTF didn't have the advantage of the $2 - $3/ticket bump for 3D.

That having been said, at my local IMAX theater both the 8:45 PM and Midnight shows were sold out, which is a good thing.

    Latest update from Deadline:

"The Fourth Of July fireworks are already beginning at the box office. Sources tell me that Paramount's Transformers 3 is on target for 2011's biggest North American opening day, even though it's Wednesday, beating Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 which had the year's highest gross on a Friday. Right now, the Michael Bay 3D actioner could hit $40M today, which will include the $8M from Wednesday's midnight screenings. (But not Tuesday's pre-midnight 3D sneaks of $5.5M.) Paramount itself is putting the range between $35M-$40M. Pirates 4 opened to $34.8M including midnight shows."

    Definitely over $1 billion worldwide.

Another article confirming the $40 million on first day (approximately). With the $13.5 from Tuesday it's almost $55 million so far.

Obviously the Non USA box office will play a bigger role this time (not like ROTF).

Now they're saying $38m for Wednesday...which includes the $8m from midnights, but not the $5.5m from Tues 9pm previews.

So...that would put the total at $43.5m.
I think I'm gonna thow up.

The Thursdays after opening Wednesdays tend to have a pretty big drop.
I suspect we're looking at $15m-$20m at best.

Hopefully lots of people are waiting for the holiday weekend to see it.

I don't know guys but I'm trying to reserve a ticket for a third watching of the movie but the IMAX theater's best places are all booked till the end of next week. But maybe it's understandable because in a 2 million city we have only one IMAX hall. There's no problem with the Dolby 3D projections though.

It is pretty amazing Nelson ! My review on IMDB was 10/10 ! pretty much outstanding for mid week opening . I hope we all hope that TF3 will surpass 1 billion but i want over 350 millions domestically and better than HP the last . This will set TF3 the king of 2011 i prey for it and you know something ? I will be glad to participate on another TF film even from here from poor Greece .... I was worried about the first numbers and critics that never watch especially the bad and faulty ones ... but now i have more faith than before . $45 millions and counting is very big for a 1-2 days start excluded worldwide numbers
May the power of Transformers technology be with us this time !!! Thanks for the numbers Nelson . We all apresiate this information of yours !!! The film was pretty great and amazing especially the 3D but more of Cybertron will be essential in the future

I disagree with $1billion worldwide... This movie wont make more than ROTF worldwide but I do think it might surpass ROTF's foreign totals. But will fall short in domestic.

You could be right, you could be wrong. Everything is possible. Don't forget that Avatar made $26.8 million on opening day, which is pretty lame compared to DOTM's $37.4 million. Everything depends on the words spread.

    A brief snippet from Variety:

'Transformers' sets B.O.'s best 2011 debut
Par pic hauls in $37.315 million on Wednesday
    By ANDREW STEWART

''Transformers'' beat the $35 million opening day domestic benchmark set on by ''Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.''

Making it the year's best U.S. opening day tally, Paramount's ''Transformers: Dark of the Moon'' scored $37.315 million on Wednesday, including $8 million from midnight grosses.

''Transformers'' beat the $35 million opening-day domestic benchmark for 2011, a record originally set by ''Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.'' (That pic opened on a Friday, but during a non-holiday frame.)

In total, ''Transformers'' collected $69.8 million globally on Wednesday, with $32.5 million from overseas wickets.

The film so far has amassed worldwide $79.4 million, including overseas previews and the $5.5 million earned from Par's 3D-only domestic play time before midnight on Tuesday.

That's a stellar worldwide start for ''Transformers''; in fact, the pic beat its predecessor internationally by 38% from comparable territories like Russia and France, where in the latter territory, ''Transformers'' also stands as this year's best local opening day perf.

Imax has contributed a total $5.1 million of the pic's global cume from 235 worldwide locations. Of that, $3.3 million came from 146 Stateside Imax runs, while the mega-screen exhib's 89 overseas locations contributed the remaining $1.7 million. …

Using a spreadsheet based on the performance of previous TF movies, I've extrapolated the final U.S. total to be no higher than $275m.

I don't get it. People go watch that vampire and wizard crap, but not TF?

Let me remind you that when it comes to these huge summer tentpole films, it's all about one thing - the worldwide box office. It's weird how many of you are so focused on the domestic front that you completely ignore the overall picture, which is the entire world.

And it's looking that "Dark of the Moon" will be a huge, huge hit worldwide, and it'll easily top the first two films. So cheer up and be happy that so far the movie is doing great, both domestically and worldwide.

This is true - remember that as an example The Island was a notorious flop in the US, largely due to its horrendous domestic ad campaign, but it ended up being a quite successful film overall thanks to overseas revenues.

(About $36M US, but $160M worldwide, and of course that's just theatrical revenue.)

    Exactly.

    Very good example.

Before making predictions I think we should wait some more time. We couldn't assume the box office decay rate to be equal as the first two, it may be slower (better) or faster. And a slower one could turn a "not so impressive as ROTF" opening week into a long ride of success, and the same goes if we see a faster one, it could ruin a great opening week.

Also we should wait until the whole week numbers are public. It may grow on weekend if the word of mouth is good.

Let's wait until we have some more data.
