Thumbs up The Rock on Blu-ray (review with comparison DVD shots - a WINNER!)

Another great review from Chad Varnadore - it sounds like The Rock on Blu-ray is an absolute winner getting 4.5/5 for both picture quality and sound quality.

Chad has included comparison shots with the DVD.

Oh man you have no idea how orgasmic i find that friggin movie. I saw it at LEAST 3 times in the theater, possibly 4. I watch it at least once a year, twice when i first got the vhs tape, though I burned through 3 copies of it. I thought the Criterion DVD was friggin beautiful, so i'm a thousand times more stoked for the Blu disc

That is one thing that REALLY sucks about HD is the lack of screen shots. I am just so sick of seeing reviews without any real screenshots. DVD reviews all have them, but for HD we have to put up with freaking photographs. They are doing themselves suck an utter disservice making screenshot impossible. I mean I bet the HD uptake would be higher if people loaded a review up and started seeing full res screenshots - they'd be like "Whoah, that is so much nicer than DVD".

They could at least put an unencrypted series of clips on the disc, or even put some screen caps on the disc.

I don't expect to see full rez screen caps as these are the same guys that have been reviewing DVD's for years.

If you're looking for some 1920x1080 screen caps you can ask forum member "Xylon" at www.avsforum.com

Chad is watching on a 92" screen, so I don't know how he could take a screen capture any other way in his current home theatre which is:

    • Sony VPL-VW60 1080p/24 SXRD projector
    • 92" Vutec Silverstar 16:9 aspect, fixed-panel screen with DIY 4-way duvetyne curtains/masking
    • Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray player (24p video and bitstream audio via HDMI)
    • Sony Playstation 3 secondary BD player (video and audio via HDMI)
    • Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player (video and audio via HDMI)
    • Denon AVR-3808ci (onboard amps used for surround back channels with 6.1 and 7.1 audio tracks only)
    • Outlaw Audio model 7500 (5-channel amp)
    • Atlantic Tech. 370 THX speakers (monopole L-C-R mains and dipole side surrounds)
    • Atlantic Tech. 350 THX speakers (dipole back surrounds for EX/ES, 6.1 and 7.1 playback)
    • Dual SVS PB2+ subs
    • Held together by Bettercables interconnects and Canare 4S11 Star Quad speaker cable
    • Room has been acoustically treated/corrected with a combination of OC 703 rigid fiberglass absorption, light diffusion, bass trapping, and the aid of Audyssey EQ
At least the review is not being done by someone with a 40" 720p set with optical audio connection. You know if there are shortcomings, with a set like Chad's they're being noted.

Thumbs up Re: The Rock on Blu-ray (review with comparison DVD shots - a WINNER!)

Well, finally watched it tonight, and WOW, the pic quality is awesome, even compared to the 576p PAL release.
