Michael Bay Talks About Transformers: Dark Of The Moon 3D

Director Michal Bay spoke to USAToday regarding movies and 3D. It’s a hype some of us love while others tend to stay away.

"The short answer is we did too much with technology that wasn't ready for prime time," says director Michael Bay, whose Transformers: Dark of the Moon was shot digitally, in 3-D and on traditional 35mm film.

"Studios are turning everything they can into 3-D without considering whether it should be done at all," he says. "We're already wearing the experience out."

"Look, there are simply some movies that shouldn't be shot in 3-D," he says. "It doesn't add anything."

But when it does, Bay is a 3-D booster. No stranger to eight-figure film budgets, Bay says that studios need to make the financial commitment to 3-D instead of doing clean-up work.

"It's different, shooting in 3-D," Bay says. "You need more cameras. You need different sets. It needs to be a forethought. Right now, studios are treating it as an afterthought."

Directors also need convincing, Bay says. Several months before Avatar was released, Bay says, Cameron invited Bay to the Avatar set. Shot primarily with computer-generated backdrops, the set consisted of bare walls, green screens and rows of computers.

"I first thought, 'This is a fad. And a pain in the ass,' " Bay says.

Then he began shooting the third Transformers film in 3-D, with a reported budget north of $200 million.

"It isn't cheap, but it shouldn't be," Bay says. "What I love is you really can create new worlds. But you have to commit to it. Fans are right to be more skeptical of it now."

Im always skeptical, im even skeptical of buying a Blu-ray or 3D Blu-ray.

These are the steps i take as a consumer before buying a Blu-ray:
    1) Is it a good movie? (if i dont know ill watch the trailer, watch the movie on YouTube or illegal download it and watch a few scenes to see if its any good to buy on Blu-ray and delete illegal DL)
    2) Does it have great scenes in it that really would look amazing on Blu-ray scenes that really pop out visually? (thinking about spectacular action scenes or a scene with a beautiful environment)
    3) If its a old movie i really liked and it just came out on Blu-ray i tend to buy it pretty fast, but if mostly wait a while if the price lowers and then buy it or at a high porice if i really want it ofcourse.
    4) If i see a cheap Blu-ray for €5 i tend to buy it. also cheap but great title movies when they do discounts on them.

I havent bought any 3D movies because we dont own a 3D projector or TV, im gonna wait till 2012 because i want them to fix those shutter glasses or having not to wear any glasses for 3D, when it stops ill buy a 3D tv/projector.

But these are the steps i would take before buying a 3D Blu-ray:
    1) Good movie? did i enjoy it?
    2) Any great visual scenes in it?
    3) Did they filmed it with 3D camera's or did they converted it later? (if converted afterwards, no buy + i also dont watch converted 3D movies in the cinema, i did only with one "Bloody Valentine 3D" SUCKED! never again.)
    4) How much for it?

Most of all the Blu-rays i own are great action movies and the rest are in general great movies not visually but just great movies.

You missed out needing to own a 3d tv. Or that computers offer superior resolutions to 1080p

not visually but just great movies.
I will only say this about bluray dvd....if you are buying a blu-ray dvd because you think you are getting a great, or that much better picture, you are fooling yourself...it isnt the picture, it is the sound that makes the biggest difference....if you put a standard version of TF in a bluray player and then the actual bluray disc to see a difference...i say good luck, because there isnt much if you have a 1080p tv....it is the sound going thru your home theater system that is the bigger difference in my opinion......anywho...

3D is being marketed completely wrong in my view....Drive Angry was filmed in 3D...that is the only reason i was intrested in the flick...if they are throwing a 3D tag on it....i.e. Clash of the Titans to make a buck, they are killing the product before it reaches the masses...Warner Bros was smart to scrap the 3d in Potter 7 pt 1 because they knew it was bad due to not having enough time to convert properly....studios need to be smarter as to which films should get the treatment....i am still not sold on TF3 until i see a 3d trailer...if not, i will see it on a regular screen...

I disagree. I have TF in both DVD and Blu-Ray. In Blu-Ray, it is truly a night/day difference in picture qualtiy. I cannot imagine watching it on anything other than blu-ray anymore. You are right on the sound though.

To me, I only read/look for PQ and AQ ratings. If its good, I believe it. Why? Cause the people that review the blurays (PQ and AQ) know their stuff. As for the movie, I'll make my own judgment whether to buy it or not. For the price, if i could find the best deal (usually $15 below is my buy mark unless something is awesome that worth a little more) i will jump on it.

Yeah if you're watching a 32" panel from across the room. That and I'd love to see what a Blu-Ray DVD is. I'm all for everybody's opinion, but at least let it be an informed one...

To see the difference in Blu-ray, your TV has to at least be 42 Inches (106cm).

There are those who are informed and there are those who are not..Nelson is one of those people who is informed..We are in the begining stages of 3d and blueray tech.Misinformed people will get left behind no matter what.It doesnt matter what u may think you know. Its what really is that counts.Filming in 3d with the right story, effects and director will make all the difference.Ones little 32" will never see 1080p for what its worth..

As far as sound goes..Hell yes its better than a standard dvd..That not an opinion thats a fact..Video is as top notch as your going to get..As long as you have the right equipment to process the sound and video..Your standard walmart hometheater system will not do this...Theres a vast amount of audio frequencys in the soundtracks these days that will never be heard due to the current way of thinking and best buy sales pitches..Do the research..

Samsung is really cheap here but dont know if it is in the US, my brother has one its petty big and the quality is good so i suggest people who have tight budget buy Samsung.

And if your planning to buy a Full HD projector buy a BenQ w1000 like me, the color range is excellent. (I have the BenQ w1000 great product so far! got it since christmas)

or the other one... cant remember the brand name..

i thought that beyond 82cm, the image was stretched. So, what is the right size TV for a blu ray? I mean, the size where it is neither compressed or stretched.

My problem with holographic is how do you make the backgrounds? I mean, i can see the point of making one object 3d holographic, but if people can watch it from different points of view, how can every one have a fore ground and a back ground?

Im not gonna wait untill theres another technology that still isnt perfect like the holographic TV... they are close with 3D now so im gonna buy some 3D movies but only movies that share a great 3D experience!
Like Michael Bay said, i dont want all movies to be on 3D but only the ones that share a great 3D experience like Transformers or simular movies like TF.

For those who dont know the resolutions:

I have a 50" plasma. I didn't say there is no difference, but saying that there is a big difference in my opinion is going too far. I watched both on my 32, 40, and 50...yes, the 50 blu version looked better, just not jump up down holy s*** better....the sound though yeah....that was a holy s*** moment....
