Not all would be shut down.

Mainly by coal and gas turbines for a while. Because so-called clean alternatives haven't been developed sufficiently.

    - Still many evacuees are in shelters. It takes a long time to remove all debris in devastated towns, particularly in the vicinity of Nuclear power plant.

    - Another nuclear power plant in central Japan is to be shut down due to the near-future risk of major quakes and tsunamis (according to experts, there's a 86% probability of 8+ magnitude quakes hitting Japan in the next 30 years).
Thanks for replying Sora. There's still a lot to be done... And so many people.
Japan is always on my prayers. For now, I hope that Fukushima gets under control soon - definetely not an easy task.

    Thanks again Sora.

Magnitude 5.3 quake in Spain? I wonder why the Earth shakes on the 11th of every month these days. Hope no member has been affected.

Sector_7_ITA - Update: 40 out of 53 nuclear power plants in Japan will be shutdown/suspended (35 plants this month). Literally, Japan goes dark this summer.

It seems that an Italian guy got Rome in a state of semi-panic yesterday, he said there was gonna be a massive earthquake in the Italian capital city on May 11th and 30% of the population took a vacation to flee the city!!! In the end it happened in Spain instead...

Sora, from what I've been told Japanese population consumes the most electrical power in summer, when air conditioning absorbs up to 40% more than the rest of the year, so I guess it will be very tough to abandon this habit and endure the hot climate

Since most areas in Japan are nearly subtropical, it'll be a tough summer to infants, elders and people with chronic diseases. Because usually the temperature here goes from 87 to 95 degrees F in summer.

Glad to hear that at least nothing happened in Rome.

That's not trivial at all. Very important and concerning news.

No wonder press moves on. While it's deadly serious to us people in Japan and neighboring countries, this is just a shallow topic to the rest of the world.

They finally admitted at the press conference last night that there was a partial meltdown inside #1 reactor. Officials found out that most of cooling water they've pumped into the reactor (2387 gal. per hour) since March has been lost by leakage from possible cracks on the pressure vessel caused by fallen fuel pellets. They say it isn't like a China Syndrome situation, yet, though.

Update: TEPCO reported that there is likely to be partial meltdown at #2 and #3 unit, too. A worker died from a heart attack (apparently with overwork) at the nuclear power plant yesterday. My deepest prayers, respect and appreciation for his efforts are with him and his family.

So awful to hear. These guys are hardcore (and like many others) are the unsung heroes there to prevent an even bigger disaster. Respect.

We were surprised to learn how low the workers' wage is, even with a hazard pay, it's not as adequate amount as people expected. While TEPCO CEO gets $445,654 this year (usually $89,0640 a year).

Update: Meltdowns in unit 1, 2, 3 confirmed. The officials suspect a possible melt-through, too.

All three of them? That's concerning, I don't know what they can do about it now.

Unfortunately I only read a bit of kana, so that website it's impossible for me to read.

i hope the people over there are okay :O

it must have been a pretty powerful eruption, it must have affected lots of fault lines and stuff, because there was a small tremor over here in Los angeles last night, a 3.4 around midnight
