Perhaps it just seems like more due to extensive media coverage and the prevalence of viral news coverage on the internet.

It's true and your both right... the number and severity of extreme weather events are increasing and so is the media coverage.

My personal opinion is (and you're welcome to dispute it as much as you want) is that the media (which is controlled by the military industrial complex) is slowly conditioning the public to accept what is happening on a global scale to prepare us for a bigger issue... for example the whole 2012 end of world nonsense. It's proven to be unprecedented universal phenomenon like planetary alignment, pole reversal, solar storms, gamma ray burst's etc and the big very controversial subject of alien contact. 2012 has been hyped up to mean the end of the world, where in fact it's really just the start of a new age - a new way of living and thinking, the transitional period may take a few years but it's already started.


I'm from NZ and I spent a week in Christchurch visiting family and friends before moving to Australia, I'm happy to say that they're all ok (including old colleagues from all of our Christchurch offices). I'm not sure if you are aware but CHCH airport is also a US military base and the closest port to Antarctica, yesterday was a dark day for Kiwi's all over the world.

Stuff like this happens every year, we just don't know about it. I guess the media coverage is expanding more to natural disasters or we are being more observant about the world.

I'm more worried about the freaking Nuke power plant that's made the Japanese authorities launch a state of Emergency in the area...

they're reporting that the coolant systems are not pumping enough water into the reactor

the wave is meant to hit Paypa New Guinea any time now.... and is scheduled to reach Hawaii in about 1 hour 50 minutes....

The initial tremor was huge and long enough to make us feel really alarmed (Japanese seismic intensity scale 5+ and Modified Mercalli scale VIII in our town). JP government is now examining the Fukushima nuke plant, no radiation leak is found so far.

The damage in northern Japan is horrible. I hope tsunamis won't affect other countries.

I'm glad you and your family are alright. I saw a horrible footage from Japan on the web. I hope the casualties will be minimal and everything will be back to normal as soon as possible.

watching a Hawaii news stream atm.... it was reported the wave would start hitting the Hawaii islands 7 minutes ago.... not hearing anything bad from there so far...

Around 18 o'clock (local time) a tsunami will hit Easter Island. Evacuation will start at midday.

They have problems with the cooling... people are being evacuated around the nuclear reactor, lets hope this doesnt end up in a second disaster...
