Default Insightful review of ARMAGEDDON on Blu-ray

I really like a lot of what this guy has to say, and he nails most of my own thoughts about the movie - although I found his comparison of Harry Stamper's profession to the real-life BP oil spill in the Mexico Gulf pretty hilarious, considering if someone like Harry actually existed and had been running the oil rig that caused the spill in the first place, the whole mess would never have happened. :lmao

Cool review, it does nearly predict the oil spill of the gulf.

Is there a reason why there are none of the extras from the Criterion release?

Is there a "making of" documentary on the Criterion?

There are small featurettes, but the most insightful part is the director commentary.

BTW, there is one shot in the Blu-ray release (the Satellite array in the NYC meteor attack sequence) where it is an alternative shot and not the original one used in the DVD & movie.

Any reason why? I really hope the Criterion cut comes to DVD.

Just try to imagine if the BP spill had actually occurred on Harry's rig:

Criterion doesn't have the distribution rights anymore. Unless they're interested in dealing something with BuenaVista for a new Blu-ray release, Criterion's Armageddon is just a souvenir now. That's too bad, coming from them I don't even understand why they didn't go anamorphic in the first, at least it could still be watchable.

Yes Criterion version is the best and i love how on The Rock's blu-ray they had the suppliments from the Criterion version on there.

While the theatrical cut on Armageddon has the best picture ever

The Rock Blu-Ray doesn't have the storyboards.

The PAL Special Edition Armageddon DVD is the same cut as the Criterion version and it's Anamorphic. I transferred it to NTSC.

When Criterion released the Armageddon video, it was still in some way in association with Buena Vista Home Video, and at the time BVHV was notable in that they had a policy of not releasing anything in anamorphic.

Now between this and Pearl we have the bad precedent that the best version of two of MB's films may never see release on BD, and in the US that would be three given The Island has yet to see a release here.
