Default ANIME: Macross Frontier premiers in Japan!

I posted about this new series last month, now for an update and a review:

Macross 25th anniversay project: Macross Frontier

The directors cut of the first episode premeried in Japan December 23rd, it serves basically as a teaser since the full series won't start airing until April 2008, within hours, quality-subbed copies were available for download from torrent sites and file hosting sites, it can also be seen broken down in 3 parts on youtube, of course I jumped right in.

I consider myself open-mined when it comes to movies, and what-not, but like any fan, I become more critical when it comes to things I really care for, I became a macross fan due to me growing up with Robotech, when I heard they were making a Robotech movie, I was pretty excited, but when I actually saw the thing, I was pissed off, and pretty much blasted the thing on their forums, it was horrible, now this Macross F is the complete opposite.

I was blown away to say the least, I felt like I was a kid again, watching the original Robotech for the first time, and it wasn't just the nostalgia, it was the characters, the story, the music, the action, everything came together perfectly .

The animation is a blend of CGI and classic 2D, which mesh together so well it never distract your eye. I have been watching what is somewhat considered expensive/big budget anime projects (outside of full feature films), like Tatsunoko's Karas, and Hellsing Ultimate. I can say that Macroff F as a TV series is better from a production stand point, production values are thru the roof, the series creator said he wanted OVA quality animation for this series, and they definetly achieved it, it looks STUNNING, the design work is also excellent, so far the action sequences are pretty up there, not quite at the same level as Macross Zero just yet, but this is just the first episode, and after watching it, I don't doubt this will top it.

Now, I know this post is pretty long, but words don't make this justice, I really suggest that if you guys like anime, check it out, it won't dissapoint.

PS: To apreciate the level of detail, I siggest taking the time to download the high-quality avi files, instead of Youtube.

This page has direct download links, get the Xvid files at the bottom of the page, pretty good quality, and subbed.

I've just seen a recorded #1 an hour ago. This series seems to be beutifully done!
Design works are nice and the animation of battle scenes was very smooth. I liked the design/motion of biomechanical aliens, and the music by Yoko Kanno.

Kanno is doing an amazing job with this series, the music and the actual songs sang by the main characters get better each episode, I suggest checking out Diamond Crevasse:

As for the animation, from what I have read on various blogs and sites, turns out Satelight (the animation company) is Pioneering with this level of intricate CGI use on a TV series, of course, it's been done on other, more expensive projects, but not at a TV show level, which limits the budget.

If you think the animation is smooth, I cant wait for you to check out the chase sequence of the second episode

The series, is on episode 5 currently, each airs thursday nights in japan, here's a helpful link for different sources on where to get the episodes, subs etc.

Episode 5 thread, on the top, there's links to the previous ones.
