What books have you read lately?

We don't just see movies, do we?

I usually read a lot books a year, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

In the past two months I've read:

Old Man's War (full saga) by John Scalzi.

Best sci-fi I have read in some time. Reminds me to early Heinlein, just a bit lighter.

Overall 8/10 (9/10 first book, 7/10 second, 9/10 third, 7/10 fourth)

Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi.

Interesting and entertaining novel about a first contact with aliens using Hollywood to introduce them.

Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko

Really interesting story about the eternal war between light and darkness, placed in Moscow, filled with charismatic characters. Much better than the movie Night Watch, which adapts just 1/3 of the novel.

Meg: Primal Waters by Steve Alten

Third novel about the Giant Prehistoric Great White Shark.

Characters are annoying and the plot sometimes is pure nonsense. Also the romantic subplots are boring as hell, and I really don't like the way Steve Alten writes (please, just stop writing with onomatopoeias).

But, you know... the whole concept of the Giant Prehistoric Great White Shark in the modern era is just plain awesome; my 6 years old mind can't resist. And the pacing is great. One you pass the first half of the story everything starts getting better and better, and the chapters end up being filled with really strong images. Made me read the last 300 pages in just a night.

The Host by Steph Meyer.
Didn't like it very much... (I don't know really why did I read it, cuz I don't like much Meyer's stories).

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.
Yeah, I liked this one. Nice story, some suspense... Recommend it.

The Kite Runner & A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Really, I cried with those both. The story has touch me deep inside (uh, this sounds too sentimental, but it's the truth).

I read this for my advanced placement English class. Great book.

I am now reading my college textbook, "The Art of Public Speaking." It's probably the first textbook that I actually enjoy reading, and college hasn't even started yet!

Day Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko.

Second novel on the story of the war between light and darkness who takes place in Russia. This time seen through the eyes of the side of the darkness.

Some times I missed the old characters, but they are still there, but usually as enemies. What we still follow is the story of the main character of the first novel, but mainly at the end of this one.

Really good one.

Meg: Primal Waters by Steve Alten

Very cool book indeed! I have read all 4 books of the Meg series. Recently finshed # 4 called Hell's Aquarium.Hell's Aquarium was even more epic than Primal Waters was! I have gone back to reread the original to refresh myself with the awesome series. I'm really looking forward to the day they finally make the film for this.Plus I am ready for book #5 he has said will be coming some day soon(possibly 2011),Night Stalkers.

In Spain we don't have Hell's Aquarium yet. Primal Waters was released during July. Even First MEG was re-released in 2008 (first time, in 1997, was a failure and got discontinued), after Alten become famous thanks to his saga about the Mayas.

Podkayne of Mars by Robert A. Heinlein

Typical "late 50s-early 60s" Heinlein novel, about the first journey to the Earth of a young girl from Mars. More than an adventure book, it is really a novel of manners with a very strong ideological background (typical Heinlein). The action starts really near to the end (again, something usual in "late 50s-early 60s" Heinlein novels), and leads to a very touching ending.

Part of the "magic" of the book is ruined by it's last page, imposed by the editor who didn't like the way Heinlein ended it. This mistake has been fixed in later editions, and can be easily ignored by just avoiding the last page.

This is usually considered the last of his juvenile novels.

I suppose you are referring to Domain and Resurrection. Both are really good too.He plans to do another in the series called Phobos.

El Testamento Maya (The Mayan testament) - Domain
La Resurrección Maya (The Mayan Resurrection) - Resurrection
