Default New Dune movie coming soon.

Coming in 2012 is a new theatrical adaptation (possibly 3 part) of Frank Herbert's brilliant Sci-fi epic novel "Dune" which inspired the very nice but not too faithful adaptation in 1984 from David Lynch and the more accurate 2000 mini-series with it's even better sequel.

This could be epic man! i'm a huge fan of the novels and i enjoyed the movies, this could be a worthy addition to the adaptations.

Harry, when you say "3 part", you mean it could be a trilogy ?

Well i've been a Dune fan since i watched the 1984 Lynch movie as a kid, read the books in high school and enjoyed the mini-series with it's better sequel. I think the 2000 Mini-Series did the books justice.

Do you think Avatar is already the new Dune? I mean Avatar is similar to Dune with the same story of a person in a strange exotic planet, a precious substance that both races of human and alien are fighting against like the spice in the novels and movies, falling in love with a woman, becoming a messiah and leading to freedom.

Actually i became a Dune fan after playing the 1992 PC game. Saw the movie a few times after that and became an even bigger fan. That Frank Herbert dude has a big imagination.

I hated the Dune movies because I never read the books (wasn't into SciFi at the time) and had to have a "translator" explain the movies as we were watching.

Also, Avatar's plot is seen so often because it actually has an archetypal theme. The White Messiah theme. See also Ferngully, and Dances with Wolves for two more examples.

I've never read the books but loved the original movie. I even have the directors cut/extended edition on DVD. Have seen the sci-fi mini-series before and enjoyed it.

The closet movies to Dune over the years besides Avatar were Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds (An excellent Hayao Miyazaki adult animated feature), Stargate, Total Recall, The Matrix, The Fifth Element, Dark City and Serenity.

John Goodman should be Baron Harkonnen.

Dune was the worst movie ever made, no, seriously...its right up there with " The Island". I loved "Bladerunner", though!

And do you think The Fifth Element, Stargate, Avatar, Nausicaa of the Valley of The Winds (a.k.a. Warriors of the Winds), The Matrix and Dark City are better similar movies than Dune Tracy? I thought The Island was brilliant.

Well originally back in the early 70's arthouse director Ajandro Jordorowsky had the rights for Dune to be a major motion picture with Metal Hurlant comic artist Jean Giraud for art, H.R. Giger for designer and a solid ideal cast like Orson Wells for the Baron, David Carraddine for Duke Leto, and Gloria Swanson for the Benne Geserit Reverend Mother and the soundtrack was suppose to be done by Pink Floyd. The director envisioned the film as a 10 hour movie as 6 seperate parts but did had the budget for it even though it never saw the light of day. Then in 1978 while Ridley Scott was working on Alien and afterwards he had interests in Dune as he loves the novels badly even after the success of his 1979 movie, but problems had began in 1981 when his older brother died of cancer. Dino De Laurentiis Studios helmed the rights for 8 years so they hired David Lynch after they saw his successful Eraserhead and Elephant Man, the production cost 47 million dollars and took from 1982 to spring 1984 to film it. The teasers and trailers came out in the spring and summer of 1984 when films like Indiana Jones 2, Gremlins and Ghostbusters were the biggest hits, David Lynch had to cut his movie done to 137 minutes as to oppose to 187 minutes for both Dino De Laurentiis studios and Universal of course it finally came out on December 18th 1984 before Christmas audiences were giving cheatsheets to know the characters and languages of Dune's universe. Unfortunately it did became number 2 then became a major flop with mostly bad reviews saying it was too big, ugly, expensive, overblown and a mess even by Roger Ebert and Siskel who called it the worst movie of the year. David Lynch himself regreted doing 'Dune" and refuse to talk about it in interviews since he wasn't satisfied on doing a big hollywood production, in 1988 when a 2 part TV extended cut with new footage and alternate takes even for the opening were made, Lynch wasn't satisfied with that cut and had his named changed to Alan Smithee on that cut as he disowned the film as his prized turkey.

Personally the Lynch movie wasn't that bad even though a bit overinflated in the budget, the casting could have been better such as Jonathan Rhys Davies for Gurney instead of Patrick Stewart, the Reverend Mother and the sisterhoods should have not been bald because they weren't bald in the novels, the typical David Lynch grossouts were not necessary and i hated the way they made the Baron into a zit faced laughing joker instead of a serious business man like in the novels but there was good production values, one of the first primative computer graphics for one sequence, and of course a fun score.

At least the 2000 Sci-fi mini-series plus it's superior sequel Children of Dune were faithful to the first 3 novels like for example 2000's Mini-Series followed the novel and everything right despite some awkward casting of a few and some typical cheap CGI but it satisfied Dune novel fans like myself but the sequel Children of Dune followed both novels by Frank Herbert like Dune Messiah and Children of Dune together very well.

This new big budget Dune movie i hear will have 4 parts for the big screen and can work well like Peter Jackson did with Lord of the Rings for he brought justice to Tolkein's vision.

Say Moo, do you agree Dune is similar to Avatar?

Pierre Morrel just dropped out of directing for Ouiji? jesus, he could have been perfect. Now they need to find the right director for the new project and one who cares about the novel and one who is talented.
