Default who do you think is the most overrated director?

if someone ask me that question.
I can answer in 0.1 seciond.

    it is nodoubt "christopher nolan"

his movie has this subject "human mind. crime. justice, what is right and what is wrong. good and evil"

I think those subject are good to make the shallow movie into "good" movie.

they are all philosphical. which is very good if you want audiences to think your movie is "deep"

problem is, in his movie. those subject are used just to make "shallow"movie into "looking good movie"

    here is an example

when you see dark knight. the story is very lame.

    1. why gothammite hates batman?

    2. what makes joker think putting dent to his level will make citizen lose hope?

3.why does dent flip-out? why does he put his anger on innocent people.

    nolan's answer

1.because he made the city more dangerous.-_-

2.I do not remember exact answer. but af far as I remember his answer was very lame.

3.he flips out because joker and gangs killed rachel. so he tries to kill innocent people...???-_- (can that even be an excuse?)

    anyway...

I am sure you know what I mean.

nolan "always" tries to put some deep and sophisticated philosophical subject into his movie.

memento. dark knight. inception... all has lame story.

    and inception.

    the ending scene.

that really made me hate nolan much.

    (spoiler)

was it a dream? or was it real?

I think the answer is quite simple.

    nolan himself doesn't know.

he just want us to think of him as a "clever manipulative" director.

I bet if a reporter asks nolan about the ending

    he will say
"well. that's up to what you think"
(in fact. he doesn't know. he just want to us to debate and watch his movie again"
and if the reporter pursue the matter.

he will simply gives a vague smile -_-.

    I hate nolan.

.. Sorry, but if those are the reasons you hate Nolan, then you obviously never actually sat down and watched either of those movies.

You only made this thread so you can rant about how much you hate Nolan, who is a fantastic movie director, by the way.

    No Spoilers here, BTW

But I found the ending of Inception both charming and intriguing. Perhaps he is only Over rated to the uninformed. . .

    Oh urg...

As this seems aimed at Nolan and "Inception" -- I wanted to love it, but as for the story, I knew the ending from the trailers... oy, no surprise. Right about at the snow scenes was where I went "oh for G-d's sake this is where I say, writer heal thyself... never direct what you write (it's simply mental masturbation... not that I don't do it, but not on someone else's dime). It was a pretty picture, but the storyline... there was no one for the writer-director to collaborate with and to tell him he needed to fix the ending as it sucked. But it was pretty.

    As for overrated directors...

    1. Woody Allen (urg, and oh please don't start me...)
    2. Roman Polanski (sorry, can't put leave reality at the door, piece of shit for a human being).

You have poor reasons why you dislike Chris Nolan...and it makes you seem like you can't understand any of his movies. I personally think he is a very very great director next to M. Bay and should actually deserves more respect than what he gets.

I think that James Cameron is the most overrated director.

James Cameron, he's great but he overrates himself.

    David Lynch all the way.

I think Nolan is one of the best storytellers in the business, but I'm not exactly sure if that makes him one of the best directors. On a certain level, it does, because part of the effect of the great story is the fact that it's directed in a manner that allows for that great story to emerge. On the other hand, I don't think Nolan is one of the best "action" directors, but I don't mean "action" necessarily in the sense of "action movies", but "action" in the sense of shot selection and dynamics, if that makes sense. Inception certainly was the closest of his films to my definition of "action" directing, but most of his other films, while fantastic, left a little to be desired (although flipping the camera upside-down during the Joker's monologue at the end of The Dark Knight was very cool).

For me, Nolan is in the same group of directors such as Tarantino and Wes Anderson; great storytellers but not great (though good) "action" directors. I'm sure there are others, but those are my favorite.

Who are my favorite "action" directors? Glad you asked. My favorites right now are Michael Bay, Tony Scott, Michael Mann, Marc Forster, and Michel Gondry, probably in that order. Again, not necessarily "action movie" directors, but "action" directors. They consistently do amazing and imaginative things with the camera, things people haven't seen before, and things that sometimes people aren't particularly thrilled with. It's certainly the cause of much of Bay's criticism by "film people" and other morons.

Oh, and BTW, glaumoon, seriously, capital letters don't cost anything on this board.

(I know that's a smartass comment, but it was kinda hard to read your post; everything looked like one sentence)

    I forgot to answer the first question;

Cameron, Spielberg, Oliver Stone, and George Lucas, although with all of those guys, it's only been in the last few years. I mean, they made some FANTASTIC movies once upon a time, but lately, not so much. (Although I haven't seen Avatar or Wall Street 2, so who knows.)

I'll have to agree and say Nolan is very over-rated however I don't have the level of hate towards him that glaumoon seems to have.

I think he's a good story teller, (though I must admit Dark Knight is in my opinion the most over rated movie of all time). He just does nothing visually to stimulate me, I often find myself bored for long periods in his movies. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what ingredient his visuals are missing to be honest,!...I just have a feeling when I'm watching that it's not grabbing me as much as it should do.

Nolan isnt known for the "visuals". Hes known to be great because he creates story and character depth in his movies.

Which as you'll see I already praised him for being a good story teller.

Still doesn't stop me from being bored for large chunks of his movies though. I realise it's not a popular view, but it's how I feel.

They is only one truly overrated director in my eyes, most directors are underated. The only really overrated director is George Lucas. A big part of the original Star Wars movies werent so good because of him. They were good because he had a great idea, but other people had to shape that idea into something that wouldnt be absolutely insane.

And well, we have seen what George Lucas does when he has the full controll.... JAR JAR BINKS IN 3D!!!!!!??????

I finally saw Avatar, and I really liked it. Probably have to spend some time mulling it over, but I thought it was really well done. Certainly had the Cameron epic-ness, and while the story wasn't new, it had enough unique moments to be enjoyable. What I really liked were the characters. I really like Sam Worthington, and he did a great job. Stephen Lang was awesome, but man, what a dick (although I guess in some ways Ribisi's character was worse). Sigourney was great, and I never thought I would say it, but I thought Michelle Rodriguez did a great job; I really liked her character.

At first, I thought the special effects were somewhat of a letdown, but once getting through the first 15 minutes or so and getting used to them, I thought they were absolutely incredible. Definitely a revolution in effects (and this was seeing it just in 2-D).
