Distributed by Paramount, "Iron Man 2" marked the fifth biggest bow ever and Paramount's best to date.

Heated expectations for the opening gave us knots in our subject, a relieved Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige conceded Sunday.

"But what untied those knots was watching the film with a paying audience," Feige added. "It really was an indication to us that they're still with us for this ride."

A franchise three-quel is expected to hit multiplexes sometime in 2013.

"We do have a contract with Robert Downey Jr. to do it, and it will come after 'The Avengers,' " Feige confirmed.

Can't wait for this! But, here's hoping that The Avengers does great, because if it ends up not working, there's a chance it would ruin the integrity of the Iron Man franchise itself.

DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: Jon Favreau All Ears For Disney's 'Magic Kingdom' Feature Film

He just completed Cowboys & Aliens, the DreamWorks/Universal co-production that stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Favreau will finish that film for release on July 29, 2011, and he is expected to re-team with Robert Downey Jr. for a third Iron Man, the franchise which was one of the Marvel films bought out from Paramount to be distributed by Disney.

Will The 'Iron Man 3' World Include The Mandarin? 'I Hope So,' Says Jon Favreau!

"If you remember, 'Iron Man' was a very normal world. It was based in our real world, with a few little things exaggerated," Favreau told MTV News. "The technology was exaggerated slightly, but really it didn't feel like you were stepping into a superhero world. It didn't feel like you were stepping into the Marvel Universe."

"By the time 'Iron Man 3' happens, you will have had three other superheroes revealing themselves at least, in addition to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Black Widow and whoever they have in 'Avengers,'" he explained. "So now you're going into a world where you open up the paper and you're reading about villains and heroes and a lot of people with different types of powers. Everything was tech-based in 'Iron Man,' but the world is opening up very much."

Favreau indicated that Marvel's growing movie universe is in good hands between now and then, though — especially when it comes to the superhero team-up extravaganza "The Avengers" and its director, Joss Whedon.

"There's a balance that has to be struck, but there's a tremendous opportunity for humor, and character, and with Joss they got somebody who really understands the underlying material and has proven that he's good and clever with his interpersonal communication," said Favreau. "So I look forward to all of that."

"I'm involved with 'Avengers,' so as I'm working on ['Cowboys & Aliens'], I'm supportive and more than available for them as little or as much as they want me to be," he added.

So does this changing universe and the introduction of magical elements in films like "Thor" mean we're any closer to seeing The Mandarin's diabolical blend of sorcery and science?

"I hope so," said Favreau. "Because all my stuff was tech-based, and now you have other worlds and inter-dimensions and this sense of history — which I think is quite cool — that we started with the Stark Expo."

"There was a lot of stuff we had to present to set up other future properties, so I'm well aware of the challenges that go into it," he added. "You're not just servicing one film. You're not just making the best film you can, you're setting up a playground for all of the characters to play in."

'Iron Man 3' Will Be A Sequel To 'Thor,' 'Captain America' And 'The Avengers,' Says Jon Favreau

"I don't know a lot about 'Thor,'" Favreau told MTV News when we visited him at the "Cowboys & Aliens" editing studio. "I've talked to ['Thor' director] Kenneth Branagh. I've met the cast members. I had a conversation with ['Avengers' director Joss Whedon] in passing, giving him my two cents about the film."

Although he hasn't seen the script for "The Avengers" yet, Favreau said he's eager to see what the next few years have in store for the Marvel movie universe — especially since he sees "Iron Man 3" as a sequel to all the Marvel Studios movies that come before it.

"In theory, 'Iron Man 3' is going to be a sequel or continuation of 'Thor,' 'Hulk,' 'Captain America' and 'Avengers,'" he said. "This whole world... I have no idea what it is. I don't think they do either, from conversations I've had with those guys."

Favreau indicated that the fluid nature of Marvel's films up to, during, and even after filming makes it difficult to predict the exact nature of the movie universe when it comes time for "Iron Man 3." With so many things likely to change between now and when the first word is written in the "Iron Man 3" script, the filmmaker said he's can't even venture a guess about what will be going on with Tony Stark when he returns to his solo adventures.

"Honestly, right now 'Captain America' and 'Thor' are their big priorities, and you learn things by shooting and making movies," he explained. "The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go."

Jon Favreau Will Not Direct Iron Man 3

The poet Robert Browning once wrote that "a man in armor is his armor's slave." By that logic, director Jon Favreau is now a free man: Insiders tell Vulture that Favreau has just informed Marvel Studios that he won't direct a third Iron Man film.

It's unclear whether the impasse was financial or creative or both. One informed source hears that he was frustrated with Marvel's urge to stuff more of their in-house heroes into the next film in the wake of The Avengers. In a recent interview with MTV News, Favreau explained that based on his conversations with Marvel Studios executives, he had no clarity as to what a third Iron Man film would even be about. “In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers,” said Favreau at the time, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”

Still other industry insiders look at Favreau's growing price tag and speculate that he was getting too expensive for the frugal Marvel and its equally cost-conscious parent company, Disney. In fact, one Hollywood player familiar with Marvel's playbook theorizes that the company had been pushing a confusing and packed vision of the third film as a tactic to provoke Favreau into leaving the project. Favreau, after all, is said to have received $10 million for the Iron Man sequel; it's unclear what he'd be seeking for a third film, but reps familiar with these sorts of gross participation deals tell Vulture that he likely would command $12 million to $15 million up front, plus a 15 percent percent of the gross after the film recouped. With star Robert Downey Jr. also participating in the gross (and so far it's a $1.2 billion global franchise), that's an enormous amount of cash headed out the door. Disney has got to be protective of their profits for an IM3: It bought Marvel for $4 billion in 2009, and then this October paid Paramount Pictures $115 million for the distribution rights to The Avengers and Iron Man 3 in order to reunite the titles with their parent company.

Regardless of why, we’re told that Marvel quietly began the process of finding a director to replace Favreau last night. But Marvel’s task is complicated by the fact that Downey Jr. has both contractually negotiated director approval and is currently the hottest leading man in Hollywood with first pick of dozens of "go" movies around town.

Favreau will be staying on the Disney lot, at least for now: His next project will be the studio's Magic Kingdom, about a family trapped in Disneyland and their magical encounters with all sorts of Disney attractions and rides. Marvel currently has no script for a third Iron Man, and while it has no plans to shoot the film until 2012 at the earliest, Marvel execs hope to put a director on the project to guide its development as soon as possible.

Favreau's Iron Man remains one of the few truly great superhero movies, so it's sad to read Cinemablend's report, based on an inside source they say has proven reliable in the past. According to this source, Iron Man 2 wasn't the movie that Favreau wanted to make, and he felt it was rushed into production without a decent script. (With only two years between Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and Favreau having complained publicly about the haste in the past, this part sound plausible.)

Cinemablend's source also says Marvel interfered excessively with Favreau's work on the movie, and "turned the project into an infomercial for The Avengers." And Favreau is unlikely to be back for Iron Man 3, both because of this bad experience and because Marvel won't want to pay him what he wants to be paid a second time. The source also claims Robert Downey Jr. saw the same problems, and while he's already locked in for Iron Man 3 and he'll have star billing in The Avengers, he probably won't be back after that.

Will Shane Black Direct ‘Iron Man 3’?

Shane Black is in contention to direct Iron Man 3 for Marvel Studios.

The writer/director has powwowed with Marvel execs about his take on the third installment in the blockbuster franchise. As of now he is being considered for the directing job, but the assumption is that if he gets the gig, he would also write a draft.

Insiders said that Black's involvement is far from a sure thing, and that other filmmakers were being looked at.

Marvel is keeping the story direction of Iron Man 3 -- which returns Robert Downey Jr. in the title role -- secret.

Disney, which owns Marvel, is scheduled to release the threequel on May 3, 2013.

The directing spot recently opened up when Jon Favreau, who directed the first two movies, announced he was departing the franchise.

Iron Man 3 would reteam Black and Downey, who worked together on the well-regarded Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which Black directed and co-wrote.

Black made his name writing high-profile specs in the 1980s and 1990s and, with movies such as Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, was one of the top writers in the action genre.

Boarding Iron Man would prove that the vet filmmaker isn't too old for this s***, to borrow a line from one of his movies. Several weeks ago, Black was tapped to write Death Note, Warner Bros.'s adaptation of a manga, and is working on Doc Savage, Sony's action project based on the classic pulp hero.

Yep, Norman Osborne took the armor and became Iron Patriot. I more think of the Iron Patriot as only the suit. Whoever takes this suit from Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 will become the Iron Patriot. The rumors so far are that this is Rhodey Rhodes.

P.S. And still let's not forget that although Spiderman is Marvel property, the movies aren't. So the continuity might be different.

Something to note: The Oscorp Tower WAS going to be in The Avengers, both studios wanted it to appear in NY's skyline. But when the Tower's design was finished, the NY digital skyline was finished and couldn't be added. So, they're in the same universe's continuity thingy.

If they could just lend Spider-man's right for one Avengers film, they'd gained everything spent in all four Spidey films
