    From Deadline Hollywood:
EXCLUSIVE: 'SPIDER-MAN 4' SCRAPPED; SAM RAIMI & TOBEY MAGUIRE & CAST OUT; FRANCHISE REBOOT FOR 2012

Insiders also tell me that Tobey Maguire heard the news in a phone call with Amy today. I'm told Tobey wasn't upset. "He's made 3 great Spider-Man movies. He's done really well. But he's the kind of guy who, if Sam wanted to go forward, would have been there for Sam and the studio. Absolutely."
Mike Fleming has heard that, from Spidey, Raimi could move to World Of Warcraft, or to The Given Day, that terrific novel by Dennis Lehane, author of Shutter Island and Mystic River. Both are worthy projects, but World Of Warcraft is a huge franchise.
    This is great news!

    From Variety:
Sony sets writer to spin 'Spider-Man' - James Vanderbilt to pen upcoming sequels
Quote Originally Posted by MICHAEL FLEMING
As Sony Pictures Entertainment preps a fourth installment of "Spider-Man" to begin production early next year, the studio has quietly engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to pen "Spider-Man 5" and "Spider-Man 6."

Vanderbilt was the first writer on "Spider-Man 4." Director Sam Raimi brought on "Rabbit Hole" playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to rewrite him, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script. The studio is enthusiastic about where it stands as the picture begins prepping for an early 2010 production start for a May 2011 release.

Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but execs at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline. That's what was originally discussed when Vanderbilt signed on to write "Spider-Man 4," but the idea of shooting a fourth and fifth film back to back with the original cast was scrapped.

Sources said it was unclear whether Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will be back. If they aren't, Vanderbilt's script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot. After committing to his fourth "Spider-Man" film, Raimi signed on to direct a new franchise based on the massively multiplayer role-playing online computer game "World of Warcraft" for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Maguire and Dunst were locked into the first three pictures and made a new deal for "Spider-Man 4." It's unclear how long they want to continue with the series.

Then again, Raimi was initially doubtful for "Spider-Man 4" because he expected to direct "The Hobbit," but returned after Guillermo del Toro got the job.

Why is Vanderbilt writing when so many variables are undecided?

The most important thing is for Sony to prime the "Spider-Man" pump more frequently. The lapse between films has grown with each blockbuster. The second film came only two years after the first, but it took three years for a third installment, and four years will have passed when "Spider-Man 4" opens in summer 2011.

Sony Pictures toppers Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton may well have a new franchise following last weekend's strong opening of "District 9." And after "Angels and Demons" grossed some $500 million worldwide, they will certainly move forward and extend the "Da Vinci Code" franchise with an adaptation of Dan Brown's fall publishing release, "The Lost Symbol." But "Spider-Man" remains the studio's most important film franchise, and Sony doesn't want to wait half a decade for the next outing.

While the "Spider-Man" movie business is booming, Sony has widenedits footprint on the franchise and become one of the investors in the Broadway musical version of the webslinger; the "Spider-Man, Turn off the Dark" tuner recently experienced a funding hiccup on the way to a planned March premiere.

Although there's been speculation that the show, which will cost upward of $35 million to produce, may not get off the ground, the project is too important to the "Spider-Man" partners to be tabled, sources said. The musical has "The Lion King" director Julie Taymor and songs by U2's Bono and the Edge.

Vanderbilt's most recent script credits are the Sylvain White-directed "The Losers" for Warner Bros. and David Fincher's "Zodiac."

I'm tired of looking at MJ.
I can't wait to see Spider-Man Brand New Day the movie!

    From THR:
'Spider-Man 4' scrapped; reboot planned -Columbia parts ways with Sam Raimi, Maguire, Dunst

The studio is parting ways with director Sam Raimi and “Spider-Man” stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and is taking the web slinger’s alter ego, Peter Parker, back to high school.

The new movie, which will have a new director and cast but still be produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios, is eyeing a summer 2012 release. It will use a script by James Vanderbilt and put the focus back on a teenager grappling with normal teen problems while also dealing with his superpowers.

News of the reboot follows weeks of script problems in which the studio was at loggerheads with Raimi over which villains to use in the fourth movie. The clashes were kept mostly under the radar but last week erupted into the public when it became clear that the studio was not going to meet its start date and subsequently its May 6, 2011, release date.

Columbia and Raimi put on a unified front Monday when making the announcement that they were parting.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire, and together we made three ‘Spider-Man’ films that set a new bar for the genre,” Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal said. “When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the boxoffice, and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise.

“We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots, and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning.”

Said Raimi: “Working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job.”

The scrapping of the movie is not without cost.

Millions have been spent on the fourth installment and on the script alone, whose writers have included Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire and Gary Ross. Alvin Sargent was in the middle of the latest draft when the plug was pulled. Preliminary special effects work also had been done.

The “Spider-Man” franchise has brought in more than $2.5 billion in boxoffice grosses for the company, with DVD sales and merchandising taking that figure to even more stratospheric heights.

Default Will Michael Bay direct the new Spiderman franchise?

I heard a rumor that Sony may ask Bay to direct the next Spiderman movie before Transformers 3. Do you guys think he would do it and do you think he would make a great Spiderman movie?

The return to teenage years rather than exploring the life of a 30-something married man holds more appeal to both a younger audience and the studio's merchandising partners. Recasting Parker as more of a 'hottie' and a bigger emphasis on the romance will also likely pull in more of a female audience base.
I can honestly see this douche below getting the parker role if he auditioned for it, based on the "return to teenage years", "hottie", "female audience" quotations.

That damn thing came out in 2002 and it was a good movie! It's not like the Hulk situation where people were disappointed with the first one!! This pisses me off! now we get another fukkin' movie with another fukkin origin story! Am I the only one who feels this way??

Ok, Spiderman 3 wasn't great. It was quite boring and the story was a mess of too much underdeveloped storylines. But Spiderman was a fine movie and Spiderman 2 a great one. And all did great at box office. I really can't understand it.

    No, you're not.

This is ( to say the least ) ridiculous. In my view, Raimi did a very good job with these movies and I really don't see the point of rebooting the entire franchise. Even though "Spider-Man 3" was slammed by the film critics, it made its money and that was it. But obviously "Sony" can't take any criticism ( then I guess the Transformers franchise should be rebooted too, just because some people didn't like "Revenge of the Fallen" ).

    Stupid, stupid idea.

    Spiderman Reboot already written...

    http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/01/11/...emporary-take/

Easily the biggest news to hit in recent weeks was the word that Sony has scrapped production on Spider-Man 4 and will reboot the character with a new film (and, presumably, an ensuing series) featuring a new cast and creative team. A general 2012 date has been mentioned, but no specific date has yet been set; expect the studio to stake a claim in May, and for any other films in that region to shift accordingly. Will Sony battle Marvel, which has The Avengers penned in for early May? You bet.
With such big news hitting early in the week, outlets are already crawling around looking for tidbits of info, and there are a few useful things to know about Spider-Man v2.0 that we didn’t cover in our first report.
First up, while I thought the facts were implicit in Sony’s press release, let’s be explicit: the new script by James Vanderbilt has already been written.
Variety notes that Sony “has long had” Vanderbilt’s script ready as a contingency plan. In other words, when he was hired to write Spider-Man 5 and 6, which were mentioned as possible reboot fodder, what he was really doing was writing this fresh start on the character. Given that Sony doesn’t want to do anything that will potentially see Spider-Man go back to Marvel, the studio was smart. (See a note about being ’smart’ at the end of this piece.)
According to EW, the idea was to have the reboot ready to go as soon as Spidey 4 was done. But when discussions about that film went nowhere, Vanderbilt’s new take was given priority. Now they’re ready to go with a script.
We don’t know much about what that script entails, other than it will feature a younger teenage Peter Parker. EW calls the script “gritty, contemporary” and references Batman Begins, seemingly not only in the sense that Christopher Nolan reinvented Batman on film, but in the sense of tone. Which would be a shame. Let’s have anything but a gritty Spider-Man, please. Anyone with a shred of understanding of the character knows that, while the stories can be heavy, ‘gritty’ isn’t what makes Spider-Man universally appealing.

    More at the link above.

Gritty? Contemporary? I'll reserve judgement til later.

Man.....This is the biggest FAIL I've heard this year and it's only January... Sam Raimi did an excellent job with the first 2 movies at least, but Sony forced him to clobber too much into the 3rd movie which made it a disappointment.. Spiderman is not supposed to be "gritty".. Spiderman and Batman are two completely different characters.....And "Contemporary" just means they'll find some non-acting ass actors a la "Twilight" who are only on screen to look good and drive the pre-teens crazy and nothing more. That does not make a good movie and i hope Sony crashes n' burns for this.

Spider-Man 4 or reboot? I can't decide which one is more unnecessary.

Raimi has manipulated a lot of minds to believe it was Sony's fault that the thrid film blew. Just read the script that Ivan and Sam Raimi wrote and it's pretty much the same plot but instead of Vulture there is Venom. That's it. 3 was a turd because of the crappy and very silly writing from Sam Raimi. Now he can do the film he wants to do and thats a internet video game that's a lot like Dungeons and Dragons

The real shocker here is that Spiderman made it to number 3, and that they are actually considering another installment for a near future. SONY needs to slow the pace down - it's killing the spider.

spiderman 3 ended in a sad note, it felt like peter was done with the superhero thing. a reboot doesn't sound so bad. it's like james bond was rebooted after 4 pierce brosnan movies. the punisher was rebooted after only 1 movie. same with the incredible hulk.

First off, there were 15 years between The Punisher movies. The first with Dolph Lundgren never amounted to much. They didn't exactly reboot The Hulk as the second flick only showed flashback scenes from the origin.

Maybe it is just me but if Sony wants to start new and go gritty and contemporary ,maybe they would fare better with doing Spiderman 2099 instead.

I know Spidey 2099 doesn't have the following that the original friendly neighborhood Spiderman does but it is still pretty interesting and fresh to the people.

He's talking about the Thomas Jane Punisher from 2004 and Punisher: War Zone from 08. Warzone was a reboot.

I'm leaning towards "reboot" -since they couldn't pull the themselves together to make the project work and said... how do we still make money from this?? Hmmm...

    From Jim Hill Media:
Why For did Sony Pictures decide not to go forward with production of “Spider-Man 4” ?

Quote Originally Posted by Jim Hill
Though -- from what I hear -- one of the main reasons that Sony moved so quickly to announce their reboot of this film franchise after Sam Raimi said that “Spider-Man 4” couldn’t possibly make its previously-locked-in May 5th, 2011 release date was this Studio’s very real fear that – if they dawdled – Disney’s lawyers might then find some loophole in Sony's original licensing agreement with Marvel that Mickey could then exploit. Which would then allow the Mouse House to reclaim the motion picture rights for this particular superhero from Sony / Columbia Pictures prematurely.

As a Sony Pictures insider explained this situation to me earlier this week:

For over 10 years now, we’ve had a good working relationship with Marvel. But now that the Mouse owns Marvel, no one’s entirely sure how aggressive The Walt Disney Company is going to be when it comes to regaining the rights to these characters. Which is why management here felt that it was crucial that this film franchise maintain forward momentum. So that Disney’s attorneys would have as few opportunities as possible to probe for weakness in our licensing agreement with Marvel.
Which is why – come the Summer of 2012 – Peter Parker is headed back to high school. This Spider-Man reboot will be written by James Vanderbilt (Who – oddly enough – was one of the first very writers that Sony Pictures hired to work with Sam Raimi on Spider-Man 4). As for who will direct & star in this 2012 tentpole … Studio officials promise that all of this information will be revealed in the coming months.

As expected, Disney’s attorneys will spend the next few years reviewing all of the licensing deals that Marvel Entertainment, Inc. has signed over the years. And – just as Sony officials feared – they will continually review these contracts, making sure that every single previously-agreed-upon term & condition is being met and/or honored. And if not … Well, you can bet that Mickey’s lawyers will then move at warp speed to sever these arrangements. Which would then allow control of the Marvel characters in question to revert back to The Walt Disney Company.

Long story short: This is going to be a long, involved process that will probably include a couple of lawsuits. But by 2017, Disney hopes to regain control of most if not all of Marvel Entertainment, Inc. characters. And that’s when the real fun (read that as “serious profit taking”) begins.
