Or better yet, what comes to people's minds when they hear the word "Terminator" - a great story or a great action and great effects?

And don't get me wrong, I've always liked the Terminator films, I'm just trying to be objective here.
I think in terms of T2, you have a point. The meat is there in plentiful, but that film is more important when it comes to pushing effects to where they are today (which also makes The Abyss an important piece.)

T1 though was carried by it's story and characters. Now, given what they had to work with, the effects are pretty incredible. But things like the stop-motion are forgivable because Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd created their story of a machine hunting a woman.

So quite honestly, it depends which film you're talking about.

I guess it really depends on the individual. I mean, I personally remember the story as well as the action.

None of my friends are fans of the Terminator films, and when i ask them about the movies, they really only talk about the "I'll Be back" and "hast la vista" quote and some of the action. So yeah, I partly agree on what your saying about people not remembering it for the story. Maybe its only the hardcore fans that do remember????

I can't say this about the first and third film, which I didn't like as much, or the 4th since I didn't see it yet, but, when I think of T2 I think of a well thought out story of a machine learning what it means to be human and the irony that a boy finds a father figure in a machine that was designed to destroy us all. The Terminator had depth because he was constantly fighting his programing to kill and need to follow orders, which were in conflict the whole time. somewhere between he found his humanity.

Not to cut this little discussion here, but I can safely say that James Cameron didn't diss ROTF. If anybody watched ROTF with the commentary, Bay said he was invited on the set of Avatar by Cameron to check out the technology. So obviously there's nothing sour going on between the two.
