I think a CGI animated movie prequel could work.
Don't be too surprised if it happens. Transformers: War for Cybertron is being released later this year and the "buzz" is that it is going to be up on the list for Game of the Year, much like Batman: Arkham Asylum was. I don't know if any of you are Batman fans, but he has had a couple of animated full-length straight to DVD releases, all of which were pretty good. It takes a different direction as far as style goes, but chances are, with the buzz of it, a well-done, straight to dvd release is likely and chances are it will resemble the design in War for Cybertron. Just how I would imagine it happen.
Hot Rod: How'd you beat them?
Kup: I'm trying to remember... There were alot of casualties that day.
Not really, especially when having big time actors/actresses and the ever present product placement (which is common in Bay movies). Although I don't think even in the animated versions there wasn't humans, ofcourse there is going to be humans no matter what. Just more balanced, I think - and under that it will still be live action as long as it has its own human actors.
Beowulf was all cgi and i was still pleased to see Angelina Jolie naked. All CGI works if done well.
Would be nice but not a realistic option.

My 2c...
I was watching a bit of the 1986 movie recently, and something I noticed was that with the exception of the 'super' robots, the sense of awe and majesty and scale of the Transformers in relation to humans was simply not present.
Something that I think has been handled very well in the two movies to date is that because the robots get relatively little screen time, the times when they do appear on screen, you do get that sense of awe and wonder - having the robots on screen seemed more 'special'. That's not to say I don't want more robot screen time - I do - but with too much robot screen time in relation to humans, the robots don't seem to be quite as 'extraordinary'.
