There are 2 versions I know of. First one is that there was an original organic maker of the robots, the organic life died away but the intelligent robots survived even in Cybertron's thin atmosphere and lack of water.

Another is that they evolved on Cybertron from a silicone base much like all life on earth is carbon based. So just like anything that evolves on a planet they just kinda grew, adapted and followed a similar evolutionary path that we did except that they retain their chameleon like ability for camouflage.

Note that these may not be the definitive version of the story, jjust two different origins I came across in comics from separate companies.

The great thing about alien movies, is doesn't have to make sense here on earth. That's why they're aliens.

Look at War of the Worlds, hardly anything the aliens did made any sense. Coming up out of the ground? C'mon! But hey, they're alien, they have their reasons.

This is how it was in the Cartoon:

Quints made robots to do their work. The ones with the autobot symbol were workers and specialty robots. The Cons were given the job of protection. There were also giant guardian bots (omega supreme is the last). A young con named megatron started going crazy and so the Autobots who knew not much of battle took up arms to stop from getting destroyed. That's when a young Bot named Orion Pax (Prime) got his new name and transformers were born as we know em.

EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember it being they also only had forms that they maintained in order to do work. Not all were able to transform. Infact most of the early autobots couldn't. It was something they had to be rebuilt (and since they ran the factories) recruited workers to modify them with weapons.

Another thing is that the Decepticons were the first ones to fly because of their intended purpose of protection.

Boy it did all turn out to be just the opposite. The Decepticons are the destroyers and the Autobots are the protectors. Interesting.....
    I'm a dog chasing cars. I don't know what I'd do if I caught one. I don't have plans. I just do things. I'm not a schemer.

I use a knife because guns are too quick. Otherwise, you can't savor all the emotions. You know who people are in their last moments.

I believe whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you... stranger.
