Another weak script in a James Cameron film, overall highly enjoyable, on the visual front it lived up to expectation, action brilliant. The technology is now there to improve cinema and possibly games. But I wasn't expecting a Oscar worthy script so I'm not disappointed. The visuals were what this film was about from day 1 and it delivered. Will go to see it in 3D and IMAX sometime in the new year if I can get an admittance.

I just got back from seeing it in 3D.. visually amazing IMO.. had a few "take your breath away" moments. Story line was good... a wee bit predictable... I would highly recommend seeing it.

Just got back. What can I say? What should I say? I don't even know where to begin!

    Okay, here goes nothing...

Simply put, this is what going to the movies is all about! The visuals were fantastic, the 3D worked perfectly, the Na'Vi looked great, the creatures, the characters were a lot of fun, but best of all, the movie had heart and magic. The sequence where all the Na'Vi clans in the region band together moved me to tears, and not a lot of movies do that to me. This movie has captured my emotions, I simply love it, love it, love it, LOVE IT.

You can say whatever you want about James Cameron, I have been guilty of it myself, but I think this is his best work yet, and one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Avatar wasn't just something to see, it was something to experience. And what I experienced was the most emotionally touching and visually revolutionary, EVOLUTIONARY, motion pictures in my movie-going life.

The visuals were the best I've ever seen, and the 3D was top notch. I just wish I could've seen it in IMAX. I probably would've had a heart attack.

Bad news for Cameron in the US Box office.

    Friday 27M
    Saturday 25M
    Sunday 20M

Falling every day in the first weekend is not good signal.

Luckily it was a blast overseas.

I would think the numbers would have fallen somewhat..considering a good bit of the US East Coast was under severe winter storm warning etc. My daughters called me and said they got 20 inches in PA.

The box office numbers will suffer in the coming weeks, all around Europe we have snow, Ice and freezing temperatures as well, not as severe as the US though which will no doubt effect takings. Should pick up when the weather has passed.

Jim'll clean up in the long haul. People are really busy with their holiday shopping all the parties going on. Avatar will be a slow burn.

I thought the movie was ok-good; in terms of story, I kept thinking of The Last Samurai throughout. I just couldn't shake the feeling that I've seen this story before (and not because of the trailer, which practically gave the story away). That's not to say the story was bad - it wasn't, and there certainly wasn't a dull moment such that you felt the story was dragging along.

The VFX were very good, but I felt that the Na'vi and other Pandoran creatures still had that 'CGI look' to them, so they weren't quite photorealistic. It could be a psychological thing - knowing that the character is CG means I'm perceiving it as less realistic.

I found that the novelty of 3D wore out very quickly - within 20 minutes. I felt it wasn't really different from the 3D available at a theme park. To be fair, though, I was seated up the back of the cinema off-centre, so the 3D wasn't as immersive as it could have been.

Bottom line: great visuals with a decent story.

I haven't seen it yet, but why is the media defending this movie the way they are? It didn't do well on its opening. Deal with it. You didn't see nearly this degree of support for ROTF. In fact, many acted like it didn't exist. In FACT, many of the top DVD sales lists didn't even have ROTF on it, even a week after the DVD was released! (Yes, I checked the dates)

I don't like it when the media shows favoritism towards a director. Especially when they give the story a "B", yet still call it cliched. If I want good eye candy, I'll just play FFX.

I know exactly what you mean Drake, and I agree with you. "Avatar" was heavily criticized ( by some critics, and after seeing the movie I agree with them ) for its simple story and weak script and what's more interesting is that many people say, "You don't go to this movie for a good story or a strong script, you go for the visual spectacle". Well, guess what - same thing applies to "Revenge of the Fallen". So it's really weird when you actually think about it - basically "Avatar" can have a simple story and a weak script and get away with it, but "Revenge of the Fallen" can't. Call me crazy, but that's just not fair.

And even though I like Cameron, I understand why ( especially now ) a lot of people can't stand him as a director. At least Bay's not pretending to be something he's not.

I'm really really really tired of people critizing Avatar for having a "weak story." Is the Illiad a weak story? Is Cinderella a weak story?

RotF doesn't have a weak story. The script has flaws, though. They had three months to put it together and yet it still hangs togther and looks amazing, so I can accept that and still enjoy the movie. I'm just tired of people having ridiculous expectations of writers. Cameron went simple on his script because he knew making the movie itself was going to be extremely time-consuming and complex. He went with epic and the plot itself perfectly rounded and makes sense. You just don't get every little detail about every little character. It's totally focused on Sully. If anything, it's too focused for people's scattered brains.

Bay went a different route. RotF was complex both in story and visuals. Listening to Orci and Kurtzman talk on the commentary gave me the feeling that they think too hard about this giant robot thing.

The reality is most critics think Bay is a glorified music video director who shouldn't be doing movies. Critics will never give Bay the respect that they give guys like Cameron and people (namely TF fans) need to get over the fact and stop taking these reviews seriously.
