So my friend Jens made an interesting statement today. He said that Avatar is this generation's Tron.
Thoughts?

If you choose to see it that way. If you look at Avatar on a point-by-point basis, then it's VERY original.
I think you're friend needs to watch more movies.
And by the way, Avatar is now OFFICIALLY the highest grossing (domestic) film of 2009. ROTF takes second place. Well done to both films!
It will beat Titanic

Just outgrossed Revenge of the Fallen, the gauntlet has been thrown. Transfomers 3 better have some pretty damn impressive CGI.

I'll reply to it here since it'll show up here.
Gauntlet my ass. My ticket to see TF2 at the Arclight in Los Angeles, one of the finest theatres in the world, was $14.50. A ticket to see Avatar, a 3D presentation on the same size screen is $17.50. And that's WITH my member discount. How anyone could compare these movies to each other is beyond my understanding. Bay works under studio pressure and completes production in less than 2 years including the 30 whole days(ridiculous pressure!!) spent writing the damned thing. Cameron spent ten years writing and developing Avatar, with studio executives hurling money at him. Ask anyone who creates for a living whether they would prefer to stay with their original deadline or MULTIPLY IT BY FIVE and I guarantee you every person will tell you they would have killed for more time. Every moment is a chance to revise.
Box office means nothing. Only your joy has meaning.

...and a story. Audiences like stories.
As of January 11th, AVATAR has made $1,331,140,000!
I bet it will slow down though.
Story and character should be more important than the visuals.

(CNN) -- James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.
