Avatar has already been nudged out by Sherlock Holmes. I am really not into seeing Avatar. I mean...why? For the eye candy? I am not dropping $16+ just to see pretty sparklies and a mediocre story.
Sherlock Holmes, on the other hand... I may be checking that one out.
Anyway...
One of my Christmas gifts was the Art of Avatar book. Nice "coffee table" book with concept art, production images, etc.
Pretty cool stuff, for those interested.
And Uradydo, you think Pearl Harbor is superior to Titanic?

Dont worry. In the long run Avatar will make much more.
You know, I ended up liking this movie, more than I thought it would, but the plot was so formulaic. Then I realized where I had seen it before: does anyone remember "Ferngully?" Came out in the 90s, animated, and almost exactly the same story, albeit tomed down for the kiddies!

Two things to remember here, people. 1, we're talking about total dollars, not indivudal number of tickets sold and 2, 3D glasses cost extra, IMAX viewing costs extra, and 3D IMAX costs extra-extra!
Avatar is "whipping" RotF because the tickets to see it cost a bit more.

Remember - Its not the story that makes a movie interesting. Its the Character which makes the film interesting. If your interested/care for the main character(s), then its likely you'll end up liking the film regardless if the story is cliched.
Any Story out there, in terms of movies, are quite straight forward. But when the character pulls you in, you feel a bit of interest for the movie.
You've hit upon something important xsubs. For me, Avatar works because of Jake Sully. The fact that he's just this jarhead really comes through and works for the movie.
