Watchmen Has Already Set a Record
    Source:The Hollywood Reporter March 4, 2009

Warner Bros. Pictures' Watchmen has set its first record before even opening - its 3,611 theater count will be the most ever for an R-rated film.

Also, the Zack Snyder-directed graphic novel adaptation will play in an impressive 1,600 locations starting at midnight Thursday. That's substantially more than the 656 midnight shows that helped Snyder's 300 earn $28 million in only the first day of its $71 million opening weekend in March 2007.

The first-day haul for 300 was the second-highest ever for an R-rated film, after the $42.5 million tally that Warners registered with 2003's The Matrix Reloaded. The previous widest release for an R-rated movie was the distributor's 3,603-theater bow for "Reloaded."

The Watchmen theater count includes 124 engagements in IMAX which all will have midnight shows

I'll never understand why people care if a movie (they're not involved in whatsoever) sets a new record, makes so and so much money and so on, but ah well.

    Default Watchmen

Saw it twice this weekend and the first time i did not like it at all. I was kind of tired and the theater i was in was awful. For the first ten minutes the lights were on until i got up and told someone about the lights still being on.
The second time around was a much better experience and I came away with a more favorable impression of the movie because of the theater i went to was loads better than the last.

the film itself though i came away think that it would have been a great low budget arthouse flick but, as the blockbuster it was billed to be it failed. I didn't read the comic so i don't know how faithful they were to it but, if this was a pretty acurate translation of the graphic novel then in my eyes it def. did not stand up to the test of time. I can appreciate watchmen simply because i know the history of comics and know what this did for comics during it's time but, now the material has been rehashed and redone so much it didn't have much of an impact with me

Therein lies the problem with this movie....

It is closely held to the book....not too many changes, aside from the obvious change in the ending...this movie will benefit from a much longer directors cut.

The theme of the story unfortunately does not resonate in todays world...If this came out 15 years ago, it probably would have held up better.

I still say Snyder did a great job on this film....the characters, for the most part, were brought to life very well by the people playing them..

If I were to change anything....as much as i like how they did the opening credits....it should have been a voice over montage instead of a music covered montage---it would have explained a lot more to the "non-Watchmen reading" audience....

...but then, how do you take 7-8 hours worth of possible movie and cram it into 2 1/2 -3 hours.......

I had a nice lengthy post that got washed away by the auto timeout/logout feature over the weekend. been too busy to try and rewrite the thing. i might post it later, but you touched on a few points i agree with.
