Default Should TF2 have a cliffhanger?

Should the sequel have a self-contained, fully resolved ending like the first film, or a climax that would serve as a teaser for the third movie (i.e. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK)?

I like the teaser idea a lot.

Cliffhanger is fine by me, aslong as it's nothing ridiculous like Unicron.

I still think that this storyline could easily be a successful franchise and it could be turned into a trilogy quite easily. Its only going to get bigger from here on out.

I don't mind the cliffhanger idea as long as it was done in the same style as:

    Kill Bill
    Matrix Reloaded / Revolutions
    Pirates Carribean Sequels

The reason why is because they wrote both movies together and filmed it as one.

So in other words if they made TF2 and TF3 simultaneously, the story would feel very coherent with each other, especially if TF2 ended with a cliffhanger.

Instead of writing a cliffhanger sequel and then possibly getting different writers to give the follow-up to the cliffhanger sequel a whole different take.

Personally i'm tired of that trend, so i'd like 2 to be mostly self contained, and just a small opening for a part 3.

Yeah, I'm with Tatsu. TF2 should be a totally self-contained story, and just have some minor elements that could be picked up in the third film.

What they could do is at the end have Megatron's damaged body floating in space and you all of a sudden see a shadow and a bright light and Unicron's voice saying "Megatron".

Ya I dont want to see unicron at all. But no matter how TF2 ends you know as long as people pay to see movies and ask for another TF movie, it will be made. Plus there seems to be a trend with movies being made in 3's. But to tell the truth as much as I love transfomers old and now new. If there is ever a chance to make a movie or three, I would love to see the back story of the Cybertron civil war. Think about it no people actors would be needed except to do voice overs. You know how much money could be saved and used for what really matters..... BIG ROBOTS BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF EACH OTHER. I mean thats what we really want anyway, isnt it?

However if you do that, surely it just becomes a big budget cartoon then?

TF1 has a small bit of a cliff hanger. We know starscream is about, we know all the decepticon parts are thrown in the ocean, and we know the decepticons had an oceanic base. How they build their underwater base, how starscream revives his allies, and megatron, and what happens from there is all in question. We dont get the sense of danger from the ending, but we know something is up.

So, a cliff hanger. Yes if the movie and its sequel are being planned/made simultaneously (IE LotR where they came out 1 year apart), No if it's going to be 2-3 years between movies... thats too long and I will forget most of the details

I see no problem with a cliffhanger, as long as Optimus is alive.
Another two years (till the third installment comes out) without Optimus is nothing less than torture.

I also think Unicron would be to much.
Maybe they just should make him Galvatron in the second movie..
When he emerges, and all other are wondering who he is, he can do the same line he did in the first movie: "I am....GALVATRON"
    Would be cool.
And maybe let the desepticons win in the second movie. The movie could end with autobots lying shattered all around the battleground, and then bumblebee or optimus send up the same beacon bumblebee did in the first movie (the autobot logo), and the movie ends with a scene of a alot of autobots coming near the earths atmosphere..
That would be a cool cliffhanger.
    Autobot presence detected... Commence extermination.....

I personally wont comment on wither it "SHOULD" have a cliffhanger, because that’s depends on what story line and story spine and scene's the writers come up with. But Pirates and many other sequel movies have proven that it is entirely possible to do it properly and that it can even act as its own advertising sometimes.

**************Pirates of the Caribbean spoiler coming up***********

I mean, barbosa walking down the stairs at the end of the first sequel, that was just freaking geniuses and that type of solid cliff hanger will cause a buzz and basically make people want to go see what all the talk is about when people say "omfg, that ending. i cant wait for the next one!"

(not that transformers NEEDS anymore buzz, but it cant hurt..lol. Also the anticipation makes the next movies that completes the story that much sweeter. Like going all day in the beating hot sun without a drink of water then finally taking that first sip. Its the anticipation and the wait while all the time knowing what you need to make the empty feeling go away that makes it that much sweeter when you finally get it)

Maybe, just so long as parts 2 and 3 aren't just one big story altogether, like Pirates or the Matrix, though I enjoyed those two.
Sorry if I cuss a lot. I suffer from Cyber-Tourettes Syndrome.

Ya i can go with the under water base thing. I mean the Desepticons as you can tell had to be on earth longer than the Autobots. At least a few months cause the chopper that Blackout became, as was said in the movie had been shot down a few months prier to the base attack. So the Desepticons had to be hiding somewhere. Maybe the Desepticon ship is already on Earth in the ocean. As for the revival of the dead Desepticons, if revived, I think Soundwave will more then likely do this. Why? Because if you have read the prequal book to the movie Starsceam does not get along with any of the other Desepticons that are in the movie. They all want to find Megatron and Starscream tries his hardest not to find him. Blackout even tries to take over as a temp leader untill Megatron is found, but Starscream kicks his but and almost kills Blackout.

    Cool Urgh

I'll be up for the cliffhanger... as much as it REALLY pains me. If there was one thing in the world of entertainment that I don't like it's cliffhangers. Grr...

But they are a good way to make a successful sequel and the good ones make you think: "so... is there gonna be a sequel or not?"

ADD moment: speaking of continuations, they will be doing a Pirates #4 as soon as this damn strike is over.

Of course it should have a cliff hanger. Just not a Pirates II ind of cliff hanger that should have been turned into 1 great movie instead of two OK ones.

Er not to burst your bubble here, but there was a teaser during the closing credits with starscream blasting into space to return to cybertron. That was a hint to a sequel and Bay did that because he signed on for the next one.

You said it yourself: That was a teaser, not a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger is exactly what the word implies - hanging on the edge of a cliff, or the emotional resemblance thereof (i.e. trapped in the path of an incoming train, locked in a room where a bomb's about to go off, etc). No bubble bursted.
