What movies have you seen lately?

Had a thread like this one the old forums. It's, basically, you review/rate the movie/movies you last saw.

I'll go first...

I saw Ringu a few days ago, which is the japanese movie the horror movie The Ring is based on. I actually prefer this version. Director Hideo Nakata is really good at creating a creepy mood. Some genuine scary sequences too.

Last night I saw Joel Schumacher's Tigerland which was surprisingly good considering the guy who directed one of the worst, most annoying movies of all time is behind the camera. However, it's not one of the best war flicks I've seen but it's a different take on the war in Vietnam so I thought it was interesting.

Iv been doing this thing lately where i'm going through all the creative screenwriters magazine podcasts from oldest to newest. So starting with "the island" their first one and working my way up. So i watch the movie then listen to the podcast then watch the movie again, so in the past 4 days iv watched these films.

The island -again (This is one of my favorite movies of all time, everybody here has seen it I’m sure, so i wont write much other than i love it)

Fantastic 4 - first time (I have mixed feelings about this. The story was well crafted and i like the direction they went with the tone and the characters, making them
kind of a dysfunctional family with comedy mixed in instead of choosing to go a more serious tone with the movie. But on the other side, comic books are very difficult to translate to film and not have it come across cheesy or corny and i think there where a couple things that where a little cheesy looking (like the special effects for the stretching man). But that’s not really anybody's fault, that’s just a bad side effect of that specific special ability has, working well on paper but not as well on screen IMO.)

four brothers - again (i liked this movie. the story design kept me interested pretty much the entire movie)

thumbsuckers - first time (this movie was kool, its a very low key subtle comedy with a nice overall theme of "We all have flaws and you shouldn’t be ashamed of them". Its sort of got the tone of science of sleep, royal tanabaums and other movies like that.


In theater for fun
Halloween - first time ( I'm not going to comment on this one because I’m not a huge fan of the genre. I think people who like horror movies might like it.)

transformers - again (lol, do i really need to comment on this one here :P lol)

Superbad - first time (really really funny, i enjoyed this one.)

Last night I saw Joel Schumacher's Tigerland which was surprisingly good considering the guy who directed one of the worst, most annoying movies of all time is behind the camera. Guys who have been around for about a year or so know this is comming... but, The Departed anyone... see it... then see it again... then bow at Marty's feet.

The Godfather- a good movie (I say this being half Italian). It reminded me a lot of my family's wedding and get togethers (and before any one says anything, the only family business we have is a plumbing and heating one). but like most movies in this genre, I can't help but feel guilty for wanting bad people to come out on top.

Forbidden Planet. Got to see it at a midnight special at a local theater, first time on the big screen, a classic.

Stardust. Pretty cool.

Pokémon the movie 10th Dialga vs. Palkia vs. Darkrai - at the request of my children. A good action and story for a family movie.

After we've seen Transformers, my daughter said "I wish Bumblebee were my pokémon!" Sure, Pikachu has racing stripes too and once NINTENDO had a Pikachu VW Beetle...

Also, How can you say Pokémon is family friendly programing? It glorifies cock fights, dog fights and any other immoral sport where an animal is abused for our enjoyment.

Black Hawk Down

Saw it again. It's definitely up there with my favourite war flicks. Moving and very intense. Ridley Scott did a great job. Amazing cinematography and a superb score by Hans Zimmer as well.

Here is just a bit of a review (really just a portion of it)... Got to make you wonder if Marcus Luttrell is wishing he'd picked Bay/Speilberg instead of Mr. Berg to do Lone Survivor... Haven't seen the film but its a harsh review (ouch, ouch, ouch and btw, would anything have made this reviewer happy I wonder). Who to dance with... Bay/Speilberg or Berg... oye.


The Kingdom
12 Sep 2007 1:02pm EDT - By Stephen Farber The Kingdom, about a terrorist attack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, would seem to be another addition to the list of this fall's politically-charged movies. But unlike the upcoming Rendition or In the Valley of Elah, Peter Berg's movie is no more than an action movie with an exotic backdrop. That would be fine, if only the movie were more exciting. It succeeds neither as a pointed political commentary nor as a taut thriller. With Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, and Jennifer Garner heading the cast, the movie should generate some healthy opening-weekend business. But its long-term prospects seem iffy.

The shallow script might have been salvaged by more dynamic direction. But Berg (Friday Night Lights) films much of the action in close-ups with a jerky moving camera. The film cries out for long shots that would clarify the logistics. Berg simply thrusts us into the middle of the chaos, which might have been his intention, but the result is a vertigo-inducing ride that leaves a lot of the action unintelligible.

The excessive use of close-ups undermines the strong work of cinematographer Mauro Fiore and production designer Tom Duffield. The film ends by suggesting that lust for revenge can warp righteous American patriots as well as Islamic fundamentalists. Still, this earnestly even-handed message is a bit of a cheat. Given the heinous actions of the terrorists, audiences are primed to cheer when they finally get blown to smithereens. We might cheer more loudly if The Kingdom were a more effective piece of rabble-rousing.

Fuck that review. I've seen it and it's a terrific piece of work. The opening and closing battle scenes are hard to watch. Not because they're filmed bad (they aren't) but because they're gut-wrenching.

Pirates Of The Caribbean - At World's End: Great entertainment. Better than Dead Man Chest, wich seems to be completely unnecesary.
Night at the Museum: Nice light fun.
Transformers: Awesome, more I see it more i like it.

to be honest I have probably scene every movie you've seen.I see nearly every movie in theaters.the ones I don't deem worthy of big screen viewing I see on my forums.It's honestly rare where someone says have you heard are seen this movie and I'm like no...I love movies.nearly all...but trust me when I say it's lame or stupid cuz it takes a really shitty screen writer actors directors or camera men to get me to say that movie was horrible.I did see a movie called altered about some rednecks kidnapping an alien that was f-in creepy.

Southland Tales: In a word, brilliant. I always wonderes what Richard Kelly could do with a budget and now I know. He made a flick that is instantly amongst my all time favorites. This is a movie that will be studied in film classes til the end of time just fro the number of themes he explores in this movie.

Duality: It's a $7,000 indy flick that I received a request for feedback on from one of the actors. Good movie. Not great but good. It was well worth the watch. Search for it on MySpace to check it out.

No I have nothing to do with the film makers and I am not affiliated with them in anyway and they don't even know I am talking about the flick here.

I just like to throw out some stuff that people have not seen that I actually saw value in.

I have to say that tonight (right now) I am/was watching "The Astronaut Farmer" and wow...

I thought it was a stupid name, stupid movie, and stupid concept...

However, this film was GREAT! Loads of heart, good performances, and dare I say Inspiring. I liked it.

HBO it is on now before the De La Hoya fight, and wow... I am actually surprised I even liked it. But, more than liking this film I loved it! I am still enjoying it with 20 minutes left, but watch it. This movie may have flopped at the Box Office, but it plays VERY well at home, and is just a joy to watch.

See this film if you like to feel good; think about Armageddon. It's the same feel. You even see Billy Bob and Bruce Willis together.

See this movie; if you enjoy films you must see "The Astronaut Farmer".
