    Question Pet Goldfish

I am wondering does anyone know of Goldfish as a pet?

My situation is this. My wife and I had 2 goldfish since 1 1/2 ago from a Carnival. My wife just recently got two other fish from a neighbor and we waited for several hours to put them in the fish tank we have. Last week one of them "died" and the other one had some black stuff on the head, dorsal fin and the back fins and then some how whatever the smaller fish from my neighbor gave whatever black thing to my wifes fish named Edy and Evy. Does anyone know if that maybe a fish disease or some fungus? My wife bought some medicine called Maroxy. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the help.

Black spots appear when fishes are in a healing process from a chemical or parasitic illness. Several reasons might be supected.

If it was caused by chemical condition of the water: Avoid ammonia. Provide adequate aeration.
If it's a parasitic illness: Clean the tank completely. Anti-parasite treatments works.

I think redqueenar knows a lot about pet fishes. I hope they'll get better.

These a disease called fin rot or something like that. I never had a fish that had it, so I don't know what it looks like.

of course you need to check your PH levels and ammonia levels. if you go to clean your tank (as sora suggested) don't use cleaners. just use water. don't add any objects into your aquarium that were not made for it. even all natural rocks form out side can screw up the small environment. if you have city water, let it sit for a day before adding it to your tank.

also, there are amazing products available. one that I have seen that may help your fish was an aloe antibiotic.

when all else fails go to a pet story (not Wal-Mart) and asking some one for help. I know the Bait and Tackle/ Pet shop that I go to has helped me many times in the past.

How big is your tank? What kinds of filtration do you have? Generally, fish medicines make me nervous. When you say "stuff" are the bumps raised like warts? Because that's fungus and you can treat that with medicine, but they've got a lot of additives in them which can make the situation worse. The most important thing is to keep the water stable. I would definitely purchase a test kit and check your numbers. It looks like this.

It sounds like your new goldfish has interrupted the nitrogen cycle with new (bad) bacteria. You will definitely need to do a partial water change, about 25% of the tank. Put a fat spoonful of aquarium salt (comes in a little bag) in with every five gallons of clean water (the purest possible water you can get). If they're just ammonia-burned from their new environment, your fish are already healing, and the salt will help with that.

Do a water change every 4 days max. If you're really freaked out by the ammonia (if the thing turns black-green!) purchase a little bottle of AMMO-LOCK. It does work.

Total agreement, Ury. I would also add that you should use the test kit on the water you're about to add before you add it, especially if you're using tap water. You'll be able to tell by the pH levels whether your water is hard or soft. Also, foreign objects in your tank - rocks, shells from the beach - will mess up your pH.

Just wish my wife didn't accept those infected guppies she got from an neighbor and I put them in the same tank. If I did that the Edy would still be alive today. Evy is her fish and Edy was mine and I am getting upset while I am typing this.

I went through like six sets of fish till i checked online. It said fish may carry protozoans that are parasites on the skin.like fleas. They multiply fast.I have six fish now and they have grown.I do not use a heater for goldfish because they are cold and warm water fish.so that eliminated the conditions, and the internet site said to add some aquarium salt or even table salt to the water.not too much though. It kills the protozoans ability to live and reproduce.its worked for me so far.I tap the glass and feed them goldfish pellets.first flakes till they got big and then pellets.heres some pics of my fish.as proof it works.check your ph too with testing strips if the problem continues but it should work.peace and good luck!
    heres my fish Biggie..
hes about a little more than six inches long.
