Don't get me wrong, I think Bay is a brilliant director and what he does with action is amazing. But is there anything he should/could improve on?

I just thought that his movies seem to be more about the effects than about the story or characters.

Don't shoot me, I just gave my oppinion.

There is always room for improvement and anyone should take that as constructive criticism. Bay even says it himself when he watches his own movies. Listen to the commentaries, he always says that if he could, he would do something differently.

I'm not sure what I think he could improve on to be completely honest. It like his movies just the way they are.

The obvious stuff is focus more on characters and less on action.

That brings me to say that there's always going to be someone in ANY industry who is the best at what they do. Michael Bay is the best action movie director out there and I don't think he has to do anything to improve his game other than keep on outdoing himself in terms of creativity in his action set pieces.

Because his next movies is Transformers 2, I'm not going to go into what he should improve on about characters and stuff because all I really want to see is a simple story that is not too complicated that is just an excuse to lead from one action set piece to another.

However if he was doing something like a crime thriller or spy movie, I'd probably get some good writers. That's about it.

Like the Island for example. It was very mysterious and eerie and you really want more of that and then once the action kicked it, it never stopped and that mysteriousness just kinda went out the window. Perhaps the story could've been written so that there's a good balance of both. I loved the action still though. Another awesome destructive car chase scene.

    Long shots and stories.

I never noticed until it was pointed out, but Transformers had very minimal long shots. Hardly ever were we taken away from the action to see the full effect of the violence. hell, the coolest part of the Pime/Megatron fight was focused on Sam in the trenches. also, the bumblebee/barricade fight was a disaster. The coolest action sequence in the whole movie was the scorpinok scene, but it was muted because I didn't feel a deep conection with the characters. sure there was the two solders, but I found my self asking "okay, I want to see something Transform" the whole time I watch that scene.

as for stories. I think many of Bays movies take a back set in the writing department. Don't get me wrong, I love the style in which the stories are told. I just feel there could be much improvement.

The obvious one is character development and story, but then again the movies he's done so far haven't required anything deep in this department. One could argue Pearl Harbor was a failing in this department, but my problems with PH were with the script, not anything to do with Michaels directing.

As far as visuals, and action goes Michael is second to none as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps after TF2 he should do that smaller project he's talked about alot.

I think we sometimes forgot how young Michael was when he burst onto the scene, and just how many years he has infront of him to develop even more as a film maker.

The "feeling of danger". He should make us believe the characters could die (more or less as happens in Serenity).

He needs to slow down the editing and pull the camera BACK once in a while. Geography to action scenes is key and he is very lacking in this department. Way to many close-up shaky cam shots leave me thinking...."wtf is happening......?" ala the crash landing in Arma. and parts of the finale to TF.
