Transformers 2 More Ambitious

Scott Farrar, visual-effects supervisor and second-unit director of Michael Bay's Transformers, told SCI FI Wire that the recently announced sequel will be more ambitious visually.

"We want to improve on some of the processes that we did," Ferrar said in an interview at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco, where the film's transforming robots were created. "I think what we're going to do is get faster and know our problems sooner and quicker. And then, of course, I know Michael's always thinking about new, crazy actions. And we're open to that."

After discussing the monumental task of creating the effects for the first film, Farrar groaned and fell off his chair in jest when asked about the sequel, which was announced last week with an anticipated release date of June 26, 2009.

"It's a circus, and they're going to raise the tight-wire walker a little bit higher next time," he said. "But it's all going to be dramatic. I think the commitment is not to just chuck out a sequel. The commitment is—and this makes us really happy here—that it's a deep story. There are lots of layers to the story of all these Decepticons, everybody. And so they want to really keep the characters rich."

Farrar added that the filmmakers plan to use the techniques and technology they learned on the first film to make the second even better. "It was difficult and, I think, laborious, and I think we learned a lot by the end," he said. "I think we've learned a lot about lighting, and I think we can go to much moodier lighting. Lots of things. It'll be improved."

I believe it!

They really raised the bar with effects on this movie and did an awesome job to say the least.
They will do more with the next movie on all aspects I'm sure.

I just want a stronger story this round

I agree, I think now that the hard part is done with at least setting up things to begin with then they can focus more on the bots with maybe less human stuff in the next film.

I still loved the first one but there's always room for improvements of course.

one would think since the part of creating the robots is done...then those millions it took can be put towards more robots on screen.....i wouldnt think they really need to add more to the photo realistic look of the bots.

Well, I would certainly hope there are some new bots since there is a whole universe of them to use especially since a lot of them got killed off in the first movie.

The inevitable sequel to this summer's mammoth hit movie "Transformers" has officially been confirmed by Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks. According to Variety, "Transformers 2" is expected to begin production before next year's anticipated strike date of July 1 and, if necessary, complete filming after any work stoppage in order to hit a June 26, 2009, release date. Director Michael Bay is in final negotiations to return after the first film's mix of action and cutting edge CG enticed millions of geeks to salivate almost $700 million in worldwide box office. The trade also stated that if Bay returns, then star Shia LaBeouf is also expected back (although based on his "Indiana Jones" experience, he'll no doubt deny it for months on end). As for executive producer Steven Spielberg, he's as intimately involved as he was on the initial flick, but things may be more tenuous this time around.
As played out last week in the trades, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, DreamWorks and Paramount seem inching toward a rough breakup after Paramount acquired the fledgling studio last year. Partners Spielberg and David Geffen have out clauses in their contracts at the end of 2008, and rumor has it they feel so disrespected by their Viacom benefactors (their $1 billion box office take this year has pretty much saved Paramount's bottom line) that they are ready to split and take the DreamWorks name and co-chairwoman Stacey Snider (former head of Universal Pictures) along with them. Obviously, the two parties are smart enough to continue working together on a cash cow such as "Transformers 2," but no one is expecting business decisions on the picture to go smoothly. One person who will be smiling through all of this is Bay, who gains more power creatively after the first installment's huge success. At this point, his ego is probably back to pre-"The Island" levels. And for a Hollywood production assistant "lucky" enough to work on one of his films, that is a very scary thought.

They definitely are going to raise the bar for the sequel, they have to.

It's the right way to go, if done right, I'm certain that movie #2 will blow us away in the same way movie #1 did in the F/X-department.

Great news!

Its all positive and makes me very keen to keep a constant eye on any and all goings on in relation to the film.

In terms of doing better effects - HOW? The effects were outstanding and pretty much faultless. The lighting was the best I have ever seen as well. If they can improve on it...oh my god...we are gonna be in for one hell of a ride!!!

Also, in reference to a deeper story - excellent. They have smacked us upside the head and shown us what transformers can become on screen, now show us more of the potential.

Sounds good. The fist movie was like a shake down run of a new ship. Now that the bugs are worked out, they know how to do this and that it should be easier to work within those constraints of focus on busting through those. In any case, the tough part was making the first one, now that they know it works.

Damnit I just want to see a combiner... GOOD GOD! I wanna see it. Or at least a city robot. Scorponok 2.0 or metroplex. I mean the Government does now they exist, so lets see an f-35, an Aurora, and some insainely ambitious TFs. I would even more love to see an Aircraft Carrier that transformers into a massive robot. Hands down that would be amazing... Even the effects involved.
