    Default Horton hears a Who

Ok, so I don't think all that many of you belong to this movies target audience - however I'd like to share my two cents. I've never been a big fan of the "Ice Age" movies. I enjoyed Scrats antics in the first one but not enough to actually watch "The Meltdown". That being said, I'm a very (!) big fan of Pixar's work, with "Ratatouille" ranking amongst my favorite movies of 2007. (with "Pan's Labyrinth" coming out on top, if anyone cares). So where does "Horton" fit in? Right along with BlueSky's "Ice Age" I'm afraid.

Kids might dig the elephant's antics, I was mostly bored. There's the usual pop culture references including an extended animé (!) sequence which absolutely doesn't fit in with the rest of the film, some instantly forgettable one-liners (e.g. "I love the smell of bananas in the morning") and not much in the way of stunning visuals. The morale comes hard and heavy, being driven home with the force of several sledgehammers.

There are some redeeming qualities like a predictable but still hilarious sequence on a bridge, but they are too few and far between to actually merit a visit to your local multiplex. Unimaginative, technically average and short on laughs. Bearable, but instantly forgettable.

So in other words, Ice Age 2. lol

Blue Sky needs a new director. Talented people but nothing drives them to push the envelope.

i dunno...i kind of dug the first Ice age movie. Though, I'm through with the kiddie movies. Pixar or otherwise. I want these companies to put more effort into some realistic type stuff for once. Like both of the Final Fantasy movies. I would also like some more adult oriented stuff.

I, for one, am looking forward to Wall-E.

That looks cute. Anything Pixar does is great.

Wall-E I'll def. be seeing. Though Pixar has been hit or miss lately. Cars was pretty bad, and Ratatouille was decent enough, the the choice to cast Patton Oswalt as Remy was pretty terrible.

it was a cookie cutter love story.

    Boy has life
    boy looses life
    boy finds girl
boy gives up girl for life
boy finds way to keep girl and life.

but wait there was an old heroic figure with a tragic past that directly relates to the main character! Hows that for spicing things up.

most US cartoon movies are cookie cutter stories.

P.S. It seems everything now a days is a love story. *cough*Trans*cough*form*cough*ers

if you replace the cars with humans and use the same story..it's a pretty lame story to be considered anything more then just average.

What about the idea of old towns falling by the wayside because of interstates? I thought that part had a bit of charm. Don't you guys go on road trips? I know I pass old towns like that when I take the back roads in between the big cities out here in Texas.

What about boy helps out the injured veteran make it across instead of cheating to win? It's a kid's story, you guys sound like you want a morose subplot for a Pixar movie.... (I hope not)

To be honest I didn't care for the love story either (but it was far from a dealbreaker). Another thing that gets me, is the fact that you are removing a "given". "Given" in that of course if it was humans and not cars, it would need to try a little harder to sell the story. But it's not, it's talking cars, it's referencing old cars, famous car cues, etc. These things far outweigh anything "cookie cutter" that might be a bigger deal to others.

I expect this from Agony, but et tu Urry?

    Sorry for the derail Wink.

    Back OT,
I don't intend to see Horton, unless my niece begs me to.

People have a tendency to forget that these movies are for kids.

    @The Great

Actually, the thing that strikes me most about Pixars' work is that it's clearly not just for kids. "Cars" is the only Pixar title I haven't seen yet, so I can't comment on it. But wether it be "The Incredibles", "A Bug's Life" or "Monsters Inc.", the humor is always clever enough to cater to the adult crowd. And what's more - the story (even if the sophistication may vary) always takes center stage, the humor is an integral part that actually drives it and often enough is almost subtle in nature. Blue Skys efforts so far relied almost exclusively on tacked-on slapstick. In the case of Scrat, that was not a bad thing per se, but those few scenes didn't carry a whole movie.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to Wall-E. This robot might be cutest thing ever to grace a CGI movie.

And one more thing: Although it's an example of the "slapstick takes center stage"-kind: The 20 minutes or so that Dreamworks has shown of "Kung Fu Panda" at various trade shows are hilarious. Way better than the lame trailers.

The reason cars was hit and miss is because,it was a depressing movie. After the movie was over,I went outside and realized......Hey we are cars.Everything is shutting down.Ever since those damn Interstate highways were layed down...I threw my Icee drink on the ground in anger.Damn You Interstate 25!!!Damn you to hell!!...(say it like charleton heston)...Now wheres route 66???....Cars was an entertaining family movie, depressing though...Cause of my situation with my kids,I intend on seeing Horton hears a Hoo.

Cars was awesome. It's a kids movie, and car guy/chick movie. R-Type is right about all the cues, and nods

    Tow Mater was hillarious

    "My name's Mater....like tahmater...except without the TAH"

"That's my fiance....she just likes me for my body"

As for wall-E...I can't help but think of walleye whenever I see that name. I want to see this movie as well. From the little preview Isaw...he kinda transforms a bit

I'm so hoping they show "Wall-E" at Amsterdams CinemaExpo in June... That would be on or around MY birthday ;-) Actually, it's pretty probable they do, last year they screened "Ratatouille". (...and amongst others, "Transformers" )

If you don't appreciate Cars for the story at least the technical aspect of it should be appreciated. I can understand people not liking Cars but no one should say anything bad about Ratatouille it had everything you could want in a movie unless certain peoples voices you just cant stand.

When Wall-E hits its going to change everyones view (mostly directors and such) of cgi movies. Supposedly there is hardly any voice work or none at all. They're using peebs and blips like R2D2 had but manipulating them into words. That and expressing deep feelings from a robot with limited movement is a huge achievement.

My nephews only like the first Ice Age but have only seen it 4 times. You know how kids are at watching movies so that should tell you something. The second movie just doesn't hold their interest. Horton might be fun for them considering the elephant and they get read Dr. Seuss stories. They love Seuss so we'll see.
