Default Toshiba to Drop HD DVD

    http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...op_HD_DVD/1468

The Hollywood Reporter is citing "reliable industry sources" as saying that Toshiba is on the verge of officially dropping its HD DVD format.

Though Toshiba denies that any such decision has been made, the just-published article in The Reporter points to "substantial" losses from each HD DVD player sold and a series of high-profile defections as key motivators for the company, with one unnamed source close to the HD DVD camp telling the Reporter that "an announcement is coming soon... it could be a matter of weeks."

Asked to respond to the report, Toshiba VP Jodi Sally reiterated her company's support of the HD DVD format. "Based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings," said Sally.

The exec went on to address "the market developments in the past month," saying only that "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."

And I only have three HD DVDs.

Maybe now blu ray will drop their prices?

yea but if HD DVD drops out, Paramount still has their check. And now they would be contract free to produce Blu Ray. So in the end they still made out on the whole thing.

Without competition prices are going to go up, not down, current players will drop in price, or stay the same due to the new profile (and more expensive)players hitting stores in the upcoming months, like this panasonic.

The PS3 is not only the most robust Blu-Ray player out there (and future proof), it is also the best deal, and IMO it will be for another year.

I would assume companies would still have to compete with themselves now that there is a format decided upon. (The enemy of my enemy type thing)

This just probably signals the end of incentives like 5 free discs of x format when you purchase x player.

Fascinating how big these tvs are getting, huh? Soon, you'll be able to have an IMAX screen in your room!

Don't know why that came to mind.

Oh yeah, cuz you MOCK me!!!!

I only had my dad buy me an HD DVD player for TF. That's all. And it looks fuckin' sweet on a 52" LCD HDTV.

Screw plasma. It ain't as good.

That would be killer!! I'd build a room to make it all fit

The price jump in flatscreens is ridiculous. I stayed with a 46 inch lcd because 4 more inches was another $1200 or so.

I could have downgraded in quality for a larger tv....but it had to be 1080p

A lot of people prefer crt projectors because they can get better shades of black....but these lcd's are getting better all the time

I'd so have to have a HUGE room for that.

Dedicated just for that. Yup. With posters, and soundproofing.

    I can dream, right? Right?
