    Default The Island

So I was watching The Island tonight, and I'm sure this has been brought up before.

i love the movie...but that damn scene where they fall off the building with that logo...is ridiculous. Completely takes you out of the movie. For something over the top...this is WAAAAAY over the top. Completely unbelievable.

It's the one part of the movie I hated.

I'm down for something over the top...but it's gotta be some what realistic in the confines of the movie.

yea, it was pretty ridiculous. On the other i just re-watched THX-1138 and see where Bay may of gotten alot of his ideas. I've always seen Island as a quasi-Logan's Run/THX-1138 amalgam. I do LOVE the Island and not just cause of the hotness that is ScarJo <as ya'll call her> but the gorgeous cinematography, amongst other things.

I'm the same, that scene is just fucking stupid. The whole film goes nuts from then on, apart from the awesome scenes with the two Ewan Mcgregors. It's a shame because the first half of the film is incredible.
I've always defended Michael Bay against attacks that his films are full of stupid explosions, girls in underwear and mindless characters... but then he made Transformers 2 and I conceded...

O i wouldn't say the film is bad from then on, no, aside from that scene you have the highway chase with the train wheels, and then the wasp/speeder bike <i forget what they're called> chase.....i mean the R scene is stupid, but i don't think i think any less of the film because of it. I'd say it's one of my recent sci-fi favs. To me sci-fi is all but dead, thankfully, but i'll accept this Logan's Run remake/update any day of the week over sci-fi trash like War of the Worlds or the Prequels.

Sci-Fi isn't dead... Serenity is still the best in the past 5 years w/o counting TF...DAMN tf IS a sci-fi flick. The only thing is people are going back to thinks like HG Wells, Verne, and others and forgetting they made this shit up. Nothing is out of the reach of an open mind. Think they thought when they made those books...well this has to be believable.

We have become so closed minded about what we will logically accept there has to be more an open mind to a series that will reintroduce more of a new concept as did the first Matrix and others. Serenity was great, but fresh ideas are needed. We all have em floating around we just do't put finger to keyboard and make something of it.

gonna have to disagree...Serenity was awesome.

Halo is a gold mine for the sci-fi genre. Same with Mass Effect. If those 2 got turned into movies....that would be amazing. And I don't buy the bullshit that you cant turn a video game into a good movie. Get the right people on the project and you can.

There's a ton of video game (PC mainly) that would be great sci-fi films. You have things like Parasite Eve (Japan did it), Halo, StarCraft, Mass Effect, Metal Gear, and others. There is so much potential there is just (like agony said) NO ONE DOES IT CORRECTLY!

As for Serenity if you can't say that was a damn good idea (since once light technology is developed life could very well be that way) its genius. You may go for months w/o seeing another person and having mass ports to stop and congregate. There is an even deeper story in there than what Serenity and FireFly presented.

Halo? Yeah, just like making Doom was a good idea

Overall it is such an interesting point though. People keep pointing out that Hollywood keeps trundling out the same story, and people here complaining about Platinum dunes doing remakes. I was thinking that games are actually coming up with new ideas.

i don't get how anyone seriously could point out something "unrealistic" in a Bay movie (or any movie for that matter, since i don't watch a movie for reality), really I just don't get it.
The only thing which takes you out of the movie is the beginning with all the clones (because they look ridiculous) and the end, where Sean Been gets shot in the hand or whatnot (can't really remember) because it just looked bad.
and yeah, serenity sucked. i don't get how everyone is saying it was underrated, blahblablah.

I'm the total opposite. I don't understand how people can keep a suspention of disbelief when they they are constantly bombarded with things that just don't work.

Sigh. I had a friend that I saw the X-Files movie with, and when we cut out he was like blah blah blah neanderthals were't around in the mesazoic era (or some such shit) and I was like "Why, were you around back then? No? Who gives a shit". And another friend I lent him the JHorror Hypnosis, and he was saying he didn't like it as "You know, I just don't believe in hypnosis". Me: "yeah well you don't fucking believe in zombies either but you still fucking love Dawn of the Dead"

If you want reality in sci fi movies watch 2001. What a snoozefest. I fell asleep 3 times in 2001. I know there is no sound in space itself, but fuck me, there is no reason:
    a) There isn't sound inside a fucking space suit. Like they have a fucking microphone/radio and reviever in it
    b) There is no score during a movie when they are in space

I use a suspension of disbelief in movies, and unless something totally slaps me in the face I don't worry. I did university level physics and I'm still not that fussy. Logic wise, the only bit in a Bay movie that gets to me is in The Rock when they are in the cistern room and there is the platform game type rotating gears and fire bursts, and Connery had memorised the pattern BREAKING OUT 40 years ago or whatever. so he goes in through it backwards to the way he exited, and then goes around and opens the door. That just gets to me. When he broke OUT, wouldn't he therefor have just exited thru the door? But you know what? I still enjoy the movie a hell of a lot.

When he broke out, Alcatraz was an active prison.

    You know, with armed guards?

Odds are they weren't guarding the entrance to whatever "machine" that was.

If you want to have problems with The Rock, ask yourself why the hell there's a mine train running under a prison built on an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay.

Or for that matter why the caption says the FBI outpost is on Pier 39, when Pier 39 has been this since 1978…

I thought the highway chase was badass. Agreed though with the R, a bit unorthodox.

Oh dude, agreed again. Serenity is an amazing film.

I don't like the Halo series as it is, so a Halo movie only bothers me.

haha the video game Doom didn't really have a story though. it really only had a story to allow you to run around and shoot shit. haha

Unrealistic is fine. Nobody has a problem with unrealistic. As long as it is realistic in the confines of the world that has been set up in the movie. Hence why nobody has EVER bitched about the Matrix being unrealistic. Look in terms of the Island will talk about the unrealistic parts.

The car chase sequence. Is it likely that cars are going to flip like that when hit by train wheels. Absolutely not, but some major carnage would happen. The way they present it is realistic enough.

The part where Ewan is piloting the Wasp and nearly misses the helicopter. Over the top? yes. But just like any vehicles, you can always have near misses between two. So it's realistic in that sense. And in their world, these vehicles exist and can fly like they do.

But then we get to someone falling like 50 stories up and crashing to the ground below and surviving. And not only surviving but without a scratch on them. Not buying that. There's over the top, and then there's ridiculously over the top to the point of not being able to see the top anymore.

That kind of stuff I juts don't mind....same with historical errors. Like the way the Vikings were dressed in Pathfinder. Not at all how they dressed in real life, but it looks cool. This kind of stuff I have no problem with. Hell look at any scene showcasing the FBI offices, with giant flat screen panels and sexy glass walls, when really the FBI is an office building with freaking cubicles.

Actually, one of the greatest achievements of The Island, I think, is their version of Los Angeles. It is very well done. Because it's true what Michael says that things don't change *that* rapidly. All the stuff in that film is close to the line of reality, which is The Island's greatest achievment. People were just painfully cynical about it.

And if Bay were not busy doing TF2 stuff I imagine he'd be quick to point out (as he did on the commentary) that the US military is in the process of developing Wasp-like transport. (And we all know what Wasps are, of course...)

Hey, thanks for that. An explanation I wasn't able to come up with that makes sense to me! It will stop that scene niggling at me now. I'm not being sarcastic either.

Didn't realized people complained about the look of the city. hell look at New York...looks almost exactly like it did 60 years ago. I think he did an amazing job with the look of the city. I think it looked great.

Having never seen any trailers prior to watching "The Island", I was surprised with the film and enjoyed its story telling. I don't remember a whole lot about it just now, because its been a while...but I loved the way they discovered they were clones. From the beginning, You could tell something was wrong with the lottery, and it just made it that much more intriguing to watch.

Yeah, I remember some over the top action sequences, but I don't think it hurt the film any
