    Thumbs up Superman : Doomsday

Great movie just don't expect anything from the comics story lines to be in it. Same premise but a different take. The Supes vs Dooms fight is awesome and the highlight of the movie. You can actually feel every hit while you watch it. There's only 2-3 minute scenes from the comic that you have to stretch to see except for 1 which is obvious, the cape on the pole and Supes lying in Lois' arms. One scene in particular is very heart full, so much in fact you forget your watching an animated movie. I wont spoil anything but the last part of the film is kinda meh. In the end I would have liked to see a true movie edition of this story but I think DC told them no is why.

As for the animation and art - its Bruce Tim style, what else is there to say? It has an older look of the main characters but it fits really well, especially Lois and Doomsday. She looked more Lois from the comic than the cartoons with the ridicules tiny waist. I didn't like Doomsdays design early on but in the movie its kinda scary looking. They really made him an evil bastard and not some dumb alien with muscles.

The voices - amazing. Adam Baldwin has a perfect Superman voice. The rest of the cast is good as well.

Worth owning, thats for damn sure.

I got the dvd the night it came out and watched it twice! Then before I went to work on Wed I watched the 2 main fights again. Damn good movie. It condenced the essence of the whole Death/World Without/Return stories in a really classy way. Everything that happened in the books are pretty much referenced or put in in a new form.

Also, I like that they changed my biggest gripe with the death of Superman. In the comic after the battle in Lois' arms Superman asked "Is he dead" then he dies after hearing the answer while in the movie he asks "Is everyone safe" then dies. The movie's version is way more in keeping with who Superman is.

I am sorry but, up until supermans death the movie was good. After he died it completely fell apart.

BIG ASS SPOILER don't read anymore.

Lex Luther became nothing more than another insane villian. The toyman wtf kind of catalyst was that? you would think they would find a more threatening situation in order to usher in the return of superman. Then of course the superman that does return ends up being a clone of superman...controlled by luthor...that goes insane when he get's on his totalitarian kick where he is enforcing all laws. I am sorry but that view is mad overdone now. you would think bruce timm would be capable of a lot more than this.

The animation and the production were great but, seriously shouldn't we expect as much? We see better designs in a cheap anime production. Bleach gives you better action and fight scenes than this week in and week out. compared to naruto this really didn't even compare. Hell compared with berserk this movie was like watching the looney tunes series. All i am saying compare this movie to other animation out and you will see it wasn't great. was it a fresh take on a story? no it was not the clone thing has even been done in smallville. The whole superhero taking his morals and view of the law to an extreme has been done to death in comics. It would have been better if they just focused on the coming of doomsday and other heroes trying to stop him until superman shows up. this movie was a disappointment. Great too look at but no substance.

Maybe thats why DC said no. They've been really cautious after the whole Batman&Robin thing about their characters. Or maybe its because the New JLA wouldn't fit in the cartoon canon or whatever. Kids nowadays wouldn't know who the hell most of the characters are.

They couldn't have focused on Doomsday, the way it started in the movie is quite similar to the way it started in the comic with his unearthing (though Lex had nothing to do with it). It wasn't until later after his return that they fleshed out Doomsday. He wasn't meant to have any back story at first, he was just there to kill Superman.

By the way, I think the most effective part of the whole comic saga was the World Without Superman arc of the story that led up into the Reign Of The Supermen. It was suddenly an almost real world take on what it would be like to loose a great leader. I still get choked up thinking about that arc.

What really shocked me about the movie was when Lex shot the girl. I said "Damn...Lex is a fucking asshole." then I remembered I was watching it with my nephews, oops.

Is it me or do you guys think the Bruce Timm Superman is kinda soft? He did Batman great but I think he pulled back on Superman too much.

is this the same (or similar) storyline as the comics that came out over a decade ago? i still have about 6 or 7 copies of the sealed, black/bagged issue of superman (it has dev's current avatar of the bloody "S" logo on the outside) Sorry for the Supes amnesia, but its been a while (in fact those are some of the last comics i owned) and those are locked away somewhere at my folks place.

Same thing for the comics, LOL. After the funeral it fell apart.

At least this movie deals with the cartoon Superman and fits into the Bruce Timm "canon" with all the alien propaganda and high science. At least thats what I try to think of it as.
