Here is what Luke Evans think about how The Hobbit looks at 48 fps:

I’ve seen myself in action and it’s incredible. It really is. It’s the closest to your own eye speed that we’ve ever seen on screen. And it takes a while, when you first put the glasses on, to just appreciate what it actually is that’s going on. Because you’re eyes are not deceiving you, there is no blur, it’s absolutely so effective. Especially for the lack of blur, which is something that we’ve always had to deal with in shooting in 3D, and now we don’t. So, yeah, we’re making history with technology as well as with film.

I'm still not sure what to think about this. I personally like the motion blur feel that the movies have. The higher frame rate makes it look like a TV show. But still let's wait and see. Although I'm pretty sure that the theaters in my city won't buy a new projectors that support higher frame rate just because of one movie. I hope you guys have the chance to see it in 48 fps this Christmas. Looks like there is big chance many of the US theaters to buy one.

The Hobbit isn't just "one movie" though. You've got the perfect recipe for a billion+ dollar box office juggernaut here. I'm pretty sure some theaters will make the upgrade. Though most will probably think, "jeez, we just upgraded to digital projectors."

Also, you have Part 2 and eventually Avatar 2 which may possibly be shot in 60 fps.

Yes, but these movies will make billions no matter the projector. I'm not sure that more people will go to see the movies only because of the higher frame rate. And most of the theater owners will decide to avoid yet another upgrade just for 3 movies in the next 2 years.

From Colider on the 48fps screening at CinemaCon:

The bad news is the 48fps is so jarring that I’m not sure casual moviegoers will enjoy it. While I figured the image quality would improve at 48fps, it’s like looking at real life on a movie screen and not in a good way. You no longer have motion blur. You no longer can hide stuff in the darkness. While watching Bilbo fight the trolls (which looked great), it looked like nothing I’ve ever seen projected on a movie screen. Granted the visual effects weren’t done and the lighting wasn’t finalized, but it was such a change that by the end of the presentation, I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the entire movie in this new 48fps format. This is definitely not what I expected to say.
Exactly what I was afraid from. I'm happy my theater won't have a 48 fps projector.

Sounds a lot like the "soap opera effect" some LCD TV's have.

The higher frame rate would be great for the 3-D version, however. From my experience, motion blur and 3-D don't mix.

I read the same thing about the 48fps after they showed a 10 minute piece of the movie at Cinemacon in Las Vegas. The 48fps picture just is so clear and sharp that it doesn't look like a movie. The movie is also shot with 4K resolution which means that the picture is 4096 X 2160!!
In the article the people who had seen it wasn't impressed for one bit. They all said it looked just weird. Too sharp and the contrasts were all wrong. It was either too bright or too black. I don't think any of the theaters in my city has projectors that can do 48fps, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it looks like with an ordinary projector on an ordinary movie theater screen.

The "backlash" from 48fps is expected, most people found HD a little jarring when switching from standard tv. I found it a little strange when i bought my first big screen Full HD LCD TV (43" 1080p 200hz) and started watching HD movies, the refresh rate made everything look weird and kinda like a home movie. However, this is different, the movie was shot at 48 frames per second and that changes the whole look and feel of what your eyes see considerably. I find it hilarious that people will eventually escape reality by immersing themselves in a realistic looking movies.

Alright, I'm going to say it, I want to see this movie in 48 fps. I'll be a new experience that I'll have to get used to, because eventually other filmmakers are going to do it, too. I remember watching Dark of the Moon on my dad's brand new LCD TV and it had the so-called "soap opera effect," and I gotta say, I couldn't stop watching it, especially the opening scene.

I just think the idea of a higher frame rate just makes more sense for a 3-D movie. Maybe that was my problem when seeing 3-D movies in the past, the lower frame rate and the 3-D simply didn't play nice together.

One thing's for sure, if The Hobbit is a massive box office success (which it will be), 48 fps isn't going away. I just hope studios won't abuse it like they did with 3-D, cutting corners, faking it and what not.

Confession: Very little (if at all) desire to see The Hobbit. 48fps or not. I am curious what a 48fps film will look like, but hopefully a different one will come along and satisfy that curiosity.

Sidenote: Not a fan of the 120hz effect on LCD sets either. But of course we're also talking about that effect being shoehorned into content @24fps. So, we'll see.

Beautiful pics. This is definitely the movie event of the year for me. Loved, absolutely love LOTR.

So there's indeed a big chance that The Hobbit will be a trilogy. I hope Peter put some material outside of the book otherwise I don't see how the small Hobbit book gets the same screentime as the huge LOTR 3 part book.

It is now official,The Hobbit will be a trilogy.

    http://movies.yahoo.com/news/peter-j...160553318.html

    http://blastr.com/2012/07/confirmed-peter-jacksons.php

We've all heard the rumors—Peter Jackson himself even hinted at it during Comic-Con. Now it's official: The Hobbit will be split into three films. Read what the master of Middle-earth, himself, had to say about it.

The news was just announced on Peter Jackson's official Facebook page.
This is what Jackson had to say:
It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie — and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved 'yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of The Hobbit films, I'd like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

    Cheers,
    Peter J

    I completely agree.
It all depends on how the first movie will go though.
But I'm definetely looking forward to see in 3D with the HFR, I believe that it will make us really feel inside the movie.
Now, we just have to wait and see if this will indeed revolutionize movies.
Although no one can go back and make a new beggining, anyone can start again and make a new end.

    http://www.slashfilm.com/peter-jacks...ets-new-title/

Peter Jackson‘s newly announced third film in his trilogy of films adapting The Hobbit will be released July 18, 2014 and it’ll be called The Hobbit: There And Back Again. That was originally the title of the second film, but that’s now been re-titled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The first film is still called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

When the third film was announced, we knew it would be the first of the six films based on the J.R.R. Tolkien series to be released in the Summer and now it will officially take the slot that did so well for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Warner Bros. domain registrations suggested that either suggest The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: Riddles in the Dark would be a title and now that’s proven to be correct. And the shifting of titles makes a ton of sense, now that you think about it. What this also reveals is the depth with which Jackson is going with these films. If the second film delves in deep enough to tell of “The Desolation of Smaug,” the dragon guarding the treasure Bilbo and the Dwarves are after, we’re in for a pretty epic story. (And that the third film will be more akin to that rumored “bridge film” we’d heard so much about.)

    So let’s recap.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released December 14 in 2D, 3D, IMAX and 3D 48 frames per second.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released on December 13, 2013 in 2D, 3D, IMAX and 3D 48 frames per second.

And The Hobbit: There And Back Again will be released July 18, 2014 in the same formats.
