Thread: A quick question on your Blu-Ray support, and what Apple is doing

Default A quick question on your Blu-Ray support, and what Apple is doing

I just have a quick question Mr. Bay, it's regarding your strong support of the Blu-Ray format. I have read how you feel about MS offering digital downloads, about how you feel they are trying to sabotage the HD market so both formats fail. Thing is, with what Apple is pulling, and the fact that they are full fledged BDA members, what are you thoughts on that?

I mean, do you realize that Jobs has recently come out and said that both formats are now obsolete because of what Apple TV 2.0 is doing?

    Some quick links:

    http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/ch...e-vs-apple-tv/

They also have *every single studio* supporting their digital downloads.

Just seems like with how upset you got over MS offering digital downloads via their Xbox Live service that you'd have more than a few things to say about what Apple is now doing.

Not too seem to forward, but is the reason we're not hearing anything about what Apple is doing because they are BDA members?

    I think it's a unfair manipulated question.

You very well know Apple isn't interfering in the format war (or what's left of it).

Apple's Final Cut also supports HD DVD authoring.

So, to compare Apple to Microsoft is just plain insane.

It's a very fair and honest question. With all his criticism of MS for offering digital downloads, I'd just like to know his stance on not only what Apple has said about the Blu-Ray format, but also what they are actively doing to end it.

They are not only offering HD digital downloads, but they offer a device to help make it a standard. They have talked *every* studio in to supporting their device, neither Blu-Ray or HD DVD have full studio support. This is a much bigger threat to both formats than MS's Xbox Live service could ever be.

...and MS constantly helps Disney out with their Blu-Ray encodes.

Input noted, but I'd still be interested to hear what Mike has to say.

The apple downloads are mis-classified as HD. They are MD (Medium Definition) by my reckoning... 720p. They don't even count in the format war. The people who are consumer participants in the format war wouldn't even consider them.

Michael Bay has been pretty outspoken in his support of Blu Ray on its pure technical merit for the capability image and sound reproduction compared with HDDVD (eg, higher bitrates available), and can't see he'd be thinking yeah, I'm really keen on overcompressed, lower resolution versions. Or anyone interested in HDDVD or Blu ray for that matter.

For fucks sake, how long is this gonna go on for???

It's kinda sad how the biggest activity ever in the history of this forum appears to be about Blu Ray/HD/Microsoft/Apple, rather than about the films of Michael Bay.
I've always defended Michael Bay against attacks that his films are full of stupid explosions, girls in underwear and mindless characters... but then he made Transformers 2 and I conceded...
