So I blew the dust off my old HP laptop and downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview today. Why would Trail the Mac user do this? Because when I saw some videos and screenshots of Windows 8, I was actually pretty impressed. So I decided to check it out myself.
The verdict?
While the Metro UI looks crisp and professional, there's just one little problem with it. Actually, it's a pretty big damn problem. It friggin' sucks as a desktop UI. I remember how a lot of Mac users complained about the "iPad-ification" of Mac OS X Lion, but at least those features were only add-ons to the OS that you could toggle on and off. Here, Microsoft dumped a critical feature that defined Windows. The Start Menu. Well, it's still technically there, just totally redesigned as a big home screen thingy. Not that there's anything wrong with that, change is always good! Except, you can't switch back to the old Start Menu, where all of your programs and stuff were all......right......THERE!!!! :head
It's pretty obvious that Windows 8 was made for a tablet, and not a big clunky laptop with a two button trackpad like the one I'm using right now. Good thing this consumer preview is free, because Microsoft has a lot of work to do on this one.
In the meantime, I'm gonna try to figure this thing out...
Has anyone else tried Windows 8 yet?
