Very interesting article at Deadline about the delay.

    http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/big-...-2s-big-delay/

“This was a case of letting a schedule to fill a summer slot dictate the film not being in 3D even though we knew that would be the most commercial version of the film. Then in the spring there were 2 big events. First John Carter lost $200M despite the best efforts of the Pixar brain trust. But the 3D film managed to gross over $200M overseas, nearly tripling its U.S. take.
“Also Channing Tatum had a breakout spring, starring in The Vow and 21 Jump Street. In our first screening of the film the reaction from audiences was good but with 2 big concerns: 1) They didn’t like the fact that Channing and The Rock really didn’t have any time to develop a friendship before Channing died, and 2) Why wasn’t it going to be in 3D? We went back and shot another week with Channing to develop more of his story with The Rock, which made the film play much better. But we didn’t have the time to be in 3D.
“Then a week ago Battleship basically had the same performance as John Carter – $60M-$70M U.S. and just over $200M international. That was just a wake-up call that said to us we need to offer the best version of the film irrespective of summer market share to ensure the best possible performance. And not being in 3D will cost us a ton of business internationally.”

I'm starting to think that they did the right thing. The fuss and expectations will be much bigger next year especially with the fixes that the audience wants.

I knew there was something more to it than just converting it to 3-D. It better be worth it.

Doesn't really change my mind about it much.

I've seen a long clip of the mountain fight and a new trailer of the movie before Hansel & Gretel. WOW! It looked really good in 3D. Paramount did well with the 3D conversion. The delay was worth it.
Here is the shorter version. But it has to be seen in 3D.

Stellar global bow for 'Retaliation' spurs plans for 3D three-quel

The muscular $132 million global bow for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” has spurred Paramount to move forward with plans for a third installment in the Hasbro franchise, sources confirmed Sunday morning.

The seemingly snappy decision to make a third “Joe” isn’t surprising considering Par has had ample time to think it over; the first film, “Rise of the Cobra,” bowed in 2009. “Retaliation” also was delayed nine months for re-shoots and the 3D conversion.

“Retaliation,” which is an MGM-Skydance co-production, cost less ($130 million) than “Cobra,” which rang in at $175 million.

“Retaliation” outdid its predecessor by 35% globally, thanks in no small part to the 3D upcharge. If “Retaliation” continues to keep that same lead (and it could), the film will land in the ballpark of $410 million worldwide. “Cobra” grossed $303 million globally.

One thing is for certain, however: “G.I. Joe 3″ will most definitely be in 3D.

I guess it’s possible. I don’t know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other. I think, I didn’t rule it out for me and I think those things have somehow for me, sort of in the past, they made me feel like a little bit cynical exercises in just drawing money out of something. It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But it’s not to say, if we found the right... I’d hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, “Oh my God...,” I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer.

i watched it twice. good movie, great costumes and action! far better than the 1st one.. the story was kinda lame, but i enjoyed the action, especially that mountain scene..

they reused a lot of the transformers sounds.. even when the paramount logo stars fly in, that was a transformer sound.

i've been saying it for a while now, they need to do a gi joe x transformers cross over film.. would be epic! that Zeus satellite in the movie could have easily been soundwave!

A lot of stuff seems to have been pulled from Transformers. I'm not sure if they were in the Joe cartoons but there were some characters that reminded me of the microbots in ROTF, not only in appearence, but they sounded the exact same. The Zeus satellite's also reminded me of Transformers, in two aspects. One was that the bit on it that spins around is the sound the Driller's tentacles make in DOTM and the shot of one of the satellite's firing a missile was an exact replication of Soundwave firing Ravage down to NEST. Down to the how the camera pans from earth to the machine, to the spinning metal and then the release of the missile.

I really enjoyed the Transformer-like sounds on the Paramount logo, I do really hope TF4 has the new 100 years one, just so we do get something fresh with how the movie can open. Watching what Joe had was a nice little taste of that.

Saw this yesterday and it was A LOT!! better than the first one. Mainly cause ILM had done the special and CGI effects on this one. I don't know what company did the CGI effects on the first one, but they sucked ass was totally FUBAR.
Best 3D shots is during the ninja fight scenes in the mountains. The rest of the time it was average at best. But then again, it's 100%!!! post converted to 3D, so I didn't expect it to be like the best 3D I ever seen. The best thing was the fact that they had fixed Snake Eyes mask! No more f&%¤#g lips like he had in the first one! The other Joes had also lost the left over Batman suits that they had on in the first one.
A good action movie, with a couple of surprising character deaths and an ending that opens up for a third movie, which has apparently got a green light from Paramount. I'll give it a weak 3 out of 5 points.
The only thing that I wonder if they make the third one is, how will they continue the story when you sum up the facts that some key G.I.Joe characters are now dead and gone...
Here's the article of the third one.

I saw this yesterday as well in Imax 3D, I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the post converted 3D was amazing, especially the flying scenes and the mountain scene! The movie had a little to many shaky close ups for me during the hand to hand combat, but thats really my only complaint. I also wanted to see more mass destruction other then the only shot they showed in the all the trailers, even though that scene is awesome. Other then that I thought it was a great time! Looking forward to the 3rd installment in the franchise.

I enjoyed this one but I expected something more sci-fi like the first part. What I liked for the first part was that it was ridiculously heavy on CG. This one is more on the practical side (explosions and stunts). It was more like a military action. I'm not familiar with the comics and I don't know which is more closer to them. In the first movie they were using special guns and ammos, special suits, special ships and planes and we had extraordinary battles under the sea. Now they have only regular guns and several ground vehicles and pretty ordinary appearences.
Still the movie is a good fun. Dull but good fun. And also I think the Rock is not made for action roles (I know how it sounds). I think he is meant to be a comedy actor (although his appearence). He was brilliant in Be Cool and I'm sure he'll be great in P&G too.

The first one sucked big time when it comes to how G.I.Joe is like in the comic books. They have special planes and vehicles, but those accelerator suits was just crap in my eyes. And the CG in the first movie was so bad, it was just FUBAR. And the ending was the worst when the Joes boarded the plane with those left over Batman suits from all the previous Batman movies. This second one is much better and closer to the comic books!
If they go forward with the plans of making a third movie, then I want this character to be in it with these guns! Dual mini-guns on both hands!!

So it seems like the general consensus is that this one is much better than the first one. My question is, can one watch this without having watched the first one, and know what the heck is going on? Because I haven't seen the first one. I don't want to see the first one. This one looks interesting.

Well I work with CG and I can tell you that Digital Domain did a tremendous job with the CG. Surely there were some shots that looked fake but the whole project was so heavy on CG that obviously they didn't have enough time. But saying that the CG is FUBAR is really ..... well, obviously you don't know what you're saying.

Watching the first one will surely help. The story of some of the antagonists from the second film are explained in the first and also the relations between white and black ninjas.
Both films are completely different so I think it would be interesting for you to watch them both. Just don't have high expectations.

Did a tremendous job? Well, I don't work with CG as you do, but I have seen my share of movies in my life and to say they did a tremendous job is in my mind overrated. I've seen movies with a lot better CG than what the first G.I.Joe movie has. And with a budget of $175 million, I expect to get a hell of a lot better effects than what the movie has. But as you said, obviously they didn't have enough time to make it perfect. And by comparing the Transformers movies and the G.I.Joe movies, it's pretty clear that the CG effects in those two movies are like day and night. The CG effects in the Transformers movies are a hell of a lot better, and my guess is because it's mainly done by ILM and the result shows in the second G.I.Joe movie where they did the CG effects instead of Digital Domain...

Saw it last night, thought it was fairly good. It's fun to watch, in a doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously way. Highlights for me are the Himalayas sequence (like a few commenters here, it seems) and the scene in Bruce Willis's house when he reveals his hidden caches of weapons
