Granted, I have yet to pick the book up.

I'm gonna say that the movie was good. Why?

I liked the claustrophobic tension despite the scale of the movie, Will Smith did a good job playing a guy who has basically lived in solitude for 3 years (despite roaming all of manhattan). I felt bad about his dog. I liked that the movie kind of had that Cast Away feel to it, where you start to see how he copes with being alone for so long (i.e., talking to mannequins), yet having something to keep him from punching his own ticket (i.e., searching for a cure).

Stretches though were:

Will Smith as a scientist/everything else. One guy can't be good at all of that all of the time.

CG of the infected. I can understand when shot involving a mass of the infected was needed. But a lot of this film (for me at least) was how claustrophobic it got when he either got caught in the dark or when he's face to face with one. They could have used practical effects for those.

The CGI reminded me entirely too much of the Mummy. :o

I love practical effects, but CGI just gives it a certainty quality. I see the trailers for AVP2 and I cant help but see bulky costumes. I see no life in them.

True, but I've always said that is a product of hiring people just for their size and not for their ability to perform under a suit/costume. Take AvP1, for example, it looked like a linebacker with too many pads, very clunky movement. As opposed to the original Predator (late Kevin Peter Hall) or someone like Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) guys whose movements fluidly shone through all of the prosthetics.

I kind of agree with BB, in that the CG quality of the infected was campy like the Mummy. What ultimately sold them were the sounds (roars/ rapid breathing) they made and the filmmakers' use of jump/scare tactics. In any case, I was talking more when it's up close (when it involved 2 or less, etc.), face to face, like when he's stuck in that abandoned building. Or when the Alpha Male sticks his head out in the sun.

It still creeped me out when he pointed his scope light in their direction to see them all huddled together (backs towards him) and breathing rapidly.
