September 7, 2007 - Tobey Maguire may be swapping his Spidey suit to climb inside a giant robot. Casting more doubt on Maguire's future involvement in the continuing Spider-Man film franchise, it's been announced that the actor is producing and may be taking a leading role in Robotech, a live-action flick based on the popular anime series from the 1980s.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to the property after a lengthy negotiation, and Maguire will reportedly produce the adaptation under his Maguire Entertainment banner.
"We are very excited to bring Robotech to the big screen," Maguire told THR. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."
There's no director attached to the project, but the script is set to be penned by Craig Zahler. Zahler is best known in industry circles for penning a well-received, but as-yet-unproduced script, The Brigands of Rattleborge -- a dark, violent Western picked up by Vertigo Entertainment.
Warner Bros. is envisioning Robotech as a high-profile summer blockbuster.
THR calls the film a "sprawling sci-fi epic," and reveals that it takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots. Maguire would presumably play one of the pilots.

This is project could be a serious problem for transformers. Robotech has a much deeper plot line and history. I think if it is done right it will be a more serious sci fi movie that could be as epic as star wars(well at least as far as the look of the film). You have a human cast and you don't have to worry about how to properly portray the personality of the robots. The obstacles in writing this movie aren't as big as the ones in transformers.

This movie can basically be written as a straightforward sci-fi war movie. You tweak the designs of the robots and change the villians a bit they will have a pretty decent movie on their hands. I mean let's face it folks Flash gordon had more grand scenes than transformers.

All i am saying is if they get this film up and running it could very well go against transformers. If tobey maguire is taking this movie seriously and plans it to be that serious sci fi movie that fans want it to be it will be good. You put a transforming robot movie with those epic star wars sci fi scenes up against Michaels Bays transformers with it's frantic and hard to follow action between robots Robotech might come out ahead

I agree 100% with you, this is my single favorite animation growing up, and if done right it could be huge, the main problem here would be getting the right team of people behind the cameras, for Transformers they couldn't have gotten better production than they did, Bay directing, Spielberg producing, Orci and Kurtzman writting. It would have been a dream for Robotech fans to get talent of this caliber behind a live action movie. So the question is, can they get the right people for Robotech?

Hah, with the success of Transformers Hollywood is jumping all over itself to copy Bay and get rights to ever robot cartoon out there! that's awesome.

Toby in Robotech, he'd be a pretty good choice for teh main character, no idea what his name was though. Would be pretty cool to see to. Warner does fairly well with its movies any how. Look at Batman.

But, nail in the coffin for Transformers 2? Nah. Its already a 300 million phenomenon, I doubt TF2 would be killed. It just means Bay has to really up the game a few more notches. Should be interesting, cause I'm sure there's someone out there looking for Gundam, Evangelion may even get a green light now, don't forget Gobots either. Never forget about Gobots.

Transformers is the Batman, like Bats paved the way for comic movies, Transformers is paving the way for robot movies.

I seriously doubt this will be a nail in the coffin at all for TF2 especially since this is in the very early stages of development, the type of scope gunrock is talking about requires a lot of time to produce so they would need to start now on production!
The ink has not even dried on the contract let alone anything else, I was never interested much in robotech and to compare it to transformers just because it has robots in it is off base to me by quite a bit.
Their robots require human drivers, the transformers do not and have their own identities.
With the domestic and worldwide success of transformers people would be foolish to put anything up against the release of transformers 2, I was worried a little about harry potter but it did not do as well at least domestically.

I'm not worried about robotech, it has it's own following and so does transformers and I know which theater I will be sitting in if the two are released together and it won't be the one showing robotech.

I second that. We don't have to worry about just one of future newcomers in this new genre, robot live-action. Transformers has become a masterpiece already. ;)
