this is kinda / somewhat related to Michael Bay but I just saw the trailer for National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Half way through the trailer, I was thinking, this is The Rock 2....or what could've been The Rock 2.

From what I remember reading, the pitch for the Rock 2 was supposed to be that a team of mercernaries lead by Michael Ironside kidnapped Mason's daughter and Goodspeed's baby as hostage to get the Microfilm from Goodspeed. He calls Mason for his help. The microfilm contains information such as the truth about the UFO landing on Roswell, the JFK assassination etc.

Ok now back to National Treasure 2. I was watching the trailer and not only is Nicolas Cage in it but Brigadier General Francis X Hummel, Ed Harris in a similiar role. And not only that but instead of a Microfilm, it is the Presidential Book of Secrets which contains the truth about the Lincoln and JFK assassinations.

I'm wondering where that idea came from or maybe Bruckheimer had a little to do with that. Either way, I couldn't help but think that The Rock 2 was a film that Jerry wanted to make but instead made it into a watered down family film which is National Treasure 2.

Nelson, move this to the film discussion forum if its not appropriate here

A likely possibility I'm sure.

Well...Bruckheimer is the common producer.

Personally, when I heard the pitch for The Rock 2, my mind went immediately to Enemy of the State, also produced by Bruckheimer, which has the main protagonist,a non-action hero (he's a lawyer), getting a microfilm and being chased by the government for it...so ok it's not a microfilm with famous secrets such as Roswell, JFK, etc...but still, I wonder if they didn't already recycled the The Rock 2 pitch for that one.
Anyhoo...

The problem is that these movies are stand alones that work well as one shots.

We found the treasure in NT and the Rock was beat the day was won.
Both should not have a 2nd one..hey how bout an Armeggedon 2??

Sounds about right on the money when thinking this idea is just filler to get more $$$.

Though I think it would of fit the Rock2 better and not NT2

Although I like The Rock better than National Treasure, I'm more comfortable with a sequel to NT. Stan Goodspeed was an unexpected hero and it would get ridiculous to have him fall in to danger again and again (Die Hard 2 came very close to this line). Ben Gates on the other hand is the type of character who would let his curiousity get the better of him and fall into danger again. But as for Ed Harris, I don't know enough about his NT character but I'm guessing he's going to be a rather typical bad guy with no redeeming qualities (like Ian Howe) where as Hummel was acting on a twisted sense of nobility and jutice.
