Oh Rock Band.....of Rock Band.
Ok...so fundamentally this game is very similar to Guitar Hero. Hell the guys who created Guitar Hero created Rock Band, before their ugly split from Red Octane.
Colored rectangles this time instead of circles wiz by as you hit the corresponding color on the guitar or drums. So fundamentally the same.
The difference is, that the response is not as good as Guitar Hero. Especially Guitar Hero 3 where the response is freakin perfect. Also the fact that they are rectangles now, makes it kind of harder in my opinion. I've been so trained on circles for 2 years now, you'd think they'd stick with that.
Another big thing is that the guitar note charts are just SUPER easy. The game is just not fun at all using the guitar in a solo campaign. Even on expert, I easily got through a 5 starred all the songs. (But most people havn't invested the hours I have in guitar hero so they simply won't be bale to tell) So many times there will be 20 second intervals where there will be no guitar because it's a song they choose with drum solo's and parts for the singer to shine. The drums however are a different story. That's about the only instrument I can see doing solo, and believe me, you'll need the practice. I've been drumming in real life for 6 years and the drums kicked my ass on medium.
So it's very much a multiplayer game.
And thats where it's fun as hell. You end up having such a blast at a party with it, that you forget that the guitar parts are very easy. And you just get into the group experience of it.
The singing works by way of pitch. So technically you don't even need to sing actual words, just hum the right pitch if you wanted.
Now it must be said. Lots of the equipment is faulty. They rushed production on making the actual instruments that it resulted in problems. So i have to return my drums because hits wont register from time to time. And now i need to test the guitar it came with. So that's a big pain in my ass, but it's a quick and painless process to get it replaced.
As for the quality of the equipment itself. the guitar is much more sturdy feeling and looking then the Guitar Hero controller. And the guitar Hero controller is pretty damn sturdy. The mic is fine, I can't see people having problems with it, like ever. The drums are my biggest concern. They are certainly sturdier then you'd think they'd be thats for sure. The kick pedal though is my biggest concern. As long as you aren't pounding away on the thing like a real drummer then you should be fine. There's really no reason to pound on them anyways. And this is coming fro ma real drummer.
If you don't plan on being 'the guy' who takes the entire thing to a friend hang out, or to parties then don't spend the $180. Your better off with just Guitar Hero. It's a more singular experience anyways. Rock Band is really only fun as a group thing.
As a side note, there are 58 songs. Most of them are the original artists, and the plan is to have thousands of songs up for download within 2 to 3 years. However at $2+ a song it's gonna get pricey. They need to figure out ways to get the price down. Like ad sponsored bundles.
Upcoming reviews:
Call of Duty 4
Mass Effect
Orange Box
and soooo many more...but these will be the next 3
