TFW: Have you been approached at all for any further work with the franchise, either with the movie (Soundwave?) or another incarnation, such as Transformers: Animated?

Welker: Well it is a little too early to be specific but I will say yes and no. No, I have not been approached by the movie folks but yes I am still involved in the franchise...more on that later.

Michael, I can understand your choice in terms of Megatron, and I know you're probably ready to murder the next guy who brings up the topic of original voice actors...but please, please allow Frank a shot at Soundwave's voice. I'm risking getting banned by Nelson (again) just to ask. His participation in the franchise really does mean that much to a load of fans out there.

I swear this is the last time I will ever bring this subject up until the movie's release.

I get this feeling that Soundwave's lines have already been recorded. So I guess the voice actor could be anybody at this point, but who knows, Bay might surprise us.

Soundwave's voice will probably be super digitized in the movie, so you probably won't even be able to recognize him even if he DID do the voice....As far as him still being involved, he'll probably be voicing Megatron in the videogame again.

Personally, I can live with any kind of alteration, as long as I know it's Frank at the heart of the character.

I should probably add I'll never stop being grateful to Michael for hiring Cullen. He went against the grain, and I seriously appreciate that.

Yes, Yes, what if this and what if that. We could go on forever picking a voice for bumblebee, a new design for prime, Megatrons face or whatever!! There no point assuming or pleaing to MB about what YOU think HIS movie should be. Yes you are an avid fan and yes your opinion counts, But we can go on forever about what WE would want, and in that case, the movie prob would NEVER get finished because it couldnt please everyone to THEIR preference. But when the day is done and over, its still MB choice..weather we agreed or not!:lol

That way we can all enjoy this EPIC sequel that MB has made for us!!

The plea to MB should be keep doing what you're doing. We loved the first film (or why else would we be here?) and I'm sure we'll love this one.

And on a personal note, thank you for representing the military as well as you do in all of your films.

MichaelGreat quote---I've said it before and I will say it many more times--PURE GENIUS!! :)

I like the way you post Mr. Bay---giving us 3 ways to interpret that quote

A)Frank has already recorded for 'Soundwave' and your are saying--"okay let me see what Welker is doing" knowing the whole time he will be in it.

-----OR-----

B)You add validation to Frank's claim about him not being approached for 'Soundwave' yet knowing he was your "guy" anyway but waiting for the right time to get the voicework done.

-----OR-----

C)You are changing your original idea of someone else and going with the man who was behind the communication specialists voice in G-1 after extreme fan support

but ya, bay has quite the posting strategy:DIt's the BEST!! He knows what will get us all psyched for TF-2 {not like any of us loyal fans aren't already}

I was able to see the Bethlehem filming and it was AMAZING. I saw them film the scene where Demolishor takes down the Black-hawk. It's so interesting to see 2 Black-hawks circling the Steel Mill and you have no idea one of them {as a CGI scene w/ a Decepticon} will be destroyed. I also got to witness people running for their lives--no idea from what though---and that crazy Ice Cream truck.

To top it all off I was able to get Tyrese's autograph and I have to say this: HE IS ONE HELL OF A NICE GUY!!! {great pick w/him Mr. Bay} He was shouting out to the fans to get them screaming and when he came close to my area I told the crowd to shout "Bring the Rain" before he came over--he loved that. :)

AWESOME EXPERIENCE---Bay created an explosive atmosphere in the Lehigh Valley {YES---Pun intended}

so you personally know dev is in it the whole time?

cool...ur so lucky:DI wish I knew for sure what was going on down in that set but Mr. Bay kept everyone hush-hush. I was standing around some of the extras {preparing for a 'military type' scene---in full gray & black outfits} I asked a few of the guys to give me some inside info and they said 'not for a million bucks kid'

They all had a great attitude about the film---it was HOT out and they were in full gear with weapons and still up-beat and having a good time waiting for their battle scene to be called by Bay.

wow...so he is alluding to himself with ladiesman217!!It was a great choice---if you look how it was used in the film.
Sam {in his mind} thinks he's a ladies man & it was great to hear Barricade & Frenzy say it...Then Turturro asks "So uh---Ladies Man two seven-teen..that is your eBay user-name right?"
My favorite use of it in the movie is when -----Mikaela said {knowing that Sam is isn't a 'player'} to Simmons "yeah that sounds like ladies man" :)

You mean like a group recording, with all the VAs in one room? It might have been done that way back in the '80's, but not this time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJKGAZO4beI&feature=channel_page

Michael seems to prefer to work one-on-one with each VA (at least the key VAs, like Peter and Hugo) which might be due to a matter of schedule than anything else. Of course, it also means he can direct the VAs as effectively as he can direct any actor on set.

I think he may have already recorded and Bay is being facetious.After I posted that a few others were leaning that same way. That's my favorite scenario because 'Soundwave' the character was probably the biggest request & I'm sure that Mr. Bay knows that if you make an attempt to please fans you don't half-step it. The voice of 'SW' was probably the second most requested feature G-1 fans wanted to see/hear {at least I think}

P.S. I have to go with BAY on the Hugo Weaving choice--Excellent addition!! :)

Of course it could be another Frank. Don't tell me that Frank Welker is the only voice actor out there who has the first name "Frank." Besides, considering that Soundwave is more than likely to have a robotic synthesized voice, anybody could play him.

As far as the Welker thing goes, I couldn't really care less. I went on youtube and found some clips of Soundwave's voice, and with the effect of the vocoder, plus given the post recording altering technology that exists today, I think I could do the voice and it would achieve the proper effect.

You put me in a room with the latest and greatest audio processing equipment (and someone who knows how to use it :) ), and I think I could make it sound pretty damn close.

Note, this does not think that I believe Welker isn't a great talent, and it would be obviously very difficult to try and replicate other voices of his. But just listening to Soundwave and how strong an effect that vocoder is, I think you could almost make anybody's voice close.

Remember kids, if you cross your eyes for too long they'll get stuck, your parents really have eyes in the back of their heads (they're invisible), and everything you read on the internet is true...

I think I'll wait to see for myself. Michael Bay has already told us he would put out a lot of misinformation to keep fans guessing. I don't remember ever reading that his own forums were off limits. His statement could be another attempt at this misinformation or legit. Either way it will be a great film.

to those who couldn't care less, than why you posting about it. if you couldn't care less than post on another topic.

frank knows the character and can deliver him better than anyone. just b/c you can imitate him doesn't mean you can voice act.but most fans want SW to have a vocoder sound which everyone can make it using their voice.

if frank gonna do SW in rotf, then he better invent something new for soundwave and not to rely on that vocoder shit. if not then i hope bay and co. invent something interesting and cool for SW.

but most fans want SW to have a vocoder sound which everyone can make it using their voice. if frank gonna do SW in rotf, then he better invent something new for soundwaveI know how you feel but....I have seen dozens of "Simpsons" episodes where there is a portrayal of a famous actor/actress & at the end of the episode that person's name is absent from the credits and you see a quick disclaimer "Some celebrity voices were impersonated." [someone from the main cast {who are all equally talented} does the celebrity voice]. That brief sentence makes you feel different after watching a 22 minute episode.

Peter Cullen's 'Optimus' sounds so much better {and wiser} than the cartoon did. 'Soundwave' has a synthetic voice that would never change so I think that everyone will be pleased if in fact Welker reprises the role because it appeals to the 'Soundwave' fans that loved the character just by himself, the ones that loved the voice but thought he was a weak fighter & most of us {ME} who loved the combo created by a voice-over 'genius'

In closing, I have no doubts that the 3 writers & Mr. Bay-hem himself will see to it that 'Soundwave' in live-action will live up to ALL expectations :)

I'm allowed to post my opinion on the manner. Some people might be in favor of Welker as Soundwave, some might dislike the idea, and some might not care either way. Those opinions are just as valid as yours. This "why are posting on this topic" reasoning is ridiculous. It's a message board; this is what people do on message boards.

And I don't recall ever saying I could voice act. All I said was that the technology has advanced to the point where it would probably be possible to make anyone's voice sound pretty damn close to Welker's Soundwave.

I agree w everything except i think Soundwave's voice can be WAAAAy better than the old 80's vocoder. You can for sure bump up the quality of recording and effects and being as how MB has any and all the robot effects he wants, Soundwave has got to have a sound that will be defining for his character being as how he plays a pretty big role in the film:)

Soundwave's voice needs to be reproduced by a vocoder (synthesizer that takes vocal input from microphone and passes it through a series of filters and oscillators). It could be done very well, with even a bit more processing to make it even more effective.

Did I see what looked like Skywarp (teleporting decepticon) in the newest trailer? hmmm...

I doubt Michael would go out of his way to deliberately make Frank sound as different from his G1 counterpart as possible. Granted, it won't be an exact reproduction, but the final version should be something much deeper and beefier than anything we've heard before. Think "vocoder Soundwave" on steroids.

Ironically, more of Frank's actual Soundwave voice will probably be heard in the movie than it ever was in the original cartoon! :rolleyes:

Better yet, what if they keep the identity of the voice actor a secret until opening night, Soundwave sounds awesome much like in the old cartoon (thanks to technology), and during the credits you hear a couple people talking about how awesome the movie was and Frank was awesome as Soundwave and then...

These credits roll...

Optimus Prime - Peter Cullen
Megatron - Hugo Weaving
Soundwave - Frank Langella

I hear crickets chirping already...

(And before anyone attacks, let me just say that I actually do think it would be great if Welker voiced Soundwave. Just not a make or break the movie deal for me. All in fun!)
