Had a thread like this one the old forums. It's, basically, you review/rate the movie/movies you last saw.
I'll go first...
I saw Ringu a few days ago, which is the japanese movie the horror movie The Ring is based on. I actually prefer this version. Director Hideo Nakata is really good at creating a creepy mood. Some genuine scary sequences too.
Last night I saw Joel Schumacher's Tigerland which was surprisingly good considering the guy who directed one of the worst, most annoying movies of all time is behind the camera. However, it's not one of the best war flicks I've seen but it's a different take on the war in Vietnam so I thought it was interesting.

Iv been doing this thing lately where i'm going through all the creative screenwriters magazine podcasts from oldest to newest. So starting with "the island" their first one and working my way up. So i watch the movie then listen to the podcast then watch the movie again, so in the past 4 days iv watched these films.
For podcast
The island -again (This is one of my favorite movies of all time, everybody here has seen it I’m sure, so i wont write much other than i love it)
Fantastic 4 - first time (I have mixed feelings about this. The story was well crafted and i like the direction they went with the tone and the characters, making them
kind of a dysfunctional family with comedy mixed in instead of choosing to go a more serious tone with the movie. But on the other side, comic books are very difficult to translate to film and not have it come across cheesy or corny and i think there where a couple things that where a little cheesy looking (like the special effects for the stretching man). But that’s not really anybody's fault, that’s just a bad side effect of that specific special ability has, working well on paper but not as well on screen IMO.)
four brothers - again (i liked this movie. the story design kept me interested pretty much the entire movie)
thumbsuckers - first time (this movie was kool, its a very low key subtle comedy with a nice overall theme of "We all have flaws and you shouldn’t be ashamed of them". Its sort of got the tone of science of sleep, royal tanabaums and other movies like that.
In theater for fun
Halloween - first time ( I'm not going to comment on this one because I’m not a huge fan of the genre. I think people who like horror movies might like it.)
transformers - again (lol, do i really need to comment on this one here :P lol)
Superbad - first time (really really funny, i enjoyed this one.)

The Godfather- a good movie (I say this being half Italian). It reminded me a lot of my family's wedding and get togethers (and before any one says anything, the only family business we have is a plumbing and heating one). but like most movies in this genre, I can't help but feel guilty for wanting bad people to come out on top.

Great action, good story. Crowe is fun to watch. You guys will love it.
In theaters
Transformers - seen 11 times already.
Oceans 13 - 35 miles from Hoover Dam!
Pokémon the movie 10th Dialga vs. Palkia vs. Darkrai - at the request of my children. A good action and story for a family movie.
After we've seen Transformers, my daughter said "I wish Bumblebee were my pokémon!" Sure, Pikachu has racing stripes too and once NINTENDO had a Pikachu VW Beetle...:D

Digimon pwns Pokémon.
Also, How can you say Pokémon is family friendly programing? It glorifies cock fights, dog fights and any other immoral sport where an animal is abused for our enjoyment.
If you can't see the sarcasm in this post you are blind.
but seriously Digimon FTW
Digimon pwns Pokémon.
I'm not at liberty to compare Digimon (BANDAI) with Pokémon (NINTENDO). Both of them are fine. ;)

Here is just a bit of a review (really just a portion of it)... Got to make you wonder if Marcus Luttrell is wishing he'd picked Bay/Speilberg instead of Mr. Berg to do Lone Survivor... Haven't seen the film but its a harsh review (ouch, ouch, ouch and btw, would anything have made this reviewer happy I wonder). Who to dance with... Bay/Speilberg or Berg... oye.
The Kingdom
12 Sep 2007 1:02pm EDT - By Stephen Farberhttp://pro.imdb.com/images/pro/tabprint.gif (http://printable.pro.imdb.com/news/hwr/2007-09-12/reviews/3) The Kingdom (http://pro.imdb.com/title/tt0431197/), about a terrorist attack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, would seem to be another addition to the list of this fall's politically-charged movies. But unlike the upcoming Rendition (http://pro.imdb.com/title/tt0804522/) or In the Valley of Elah (http://pro.imdb.com/title/tt0478134/), Peter Berg's movie is no more than an action movie with an exotic backdrop. That would be fine, if only the movie were more exciting. It succeeds neither as a pointed political commentary nor as a taut thriller. With Jamie Foxx (http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0004937/), Chris Cooper (http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0177933/), and Jennifer Garner (http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0004950/) heading the cast, the movie should generate some healthy opening-weekend business. But its long-term prospects seem iffy.
The shallow script might have been salvaged by more dynamic direction. But Berg (Friday Night Lights (http://pro.imdb.com/title/tt0390022/)) films much of the action in close-ups with a jerky moving camera. The film cries out for long shots that would clarify the logistics. Berg simply thrusts us into the middle of the chaos, which might have been his intention, but the result is a vertigo-inducing ride that leaves a lot of the action unintelligible.
The excessive use of close-ups undermines the strong work of cinematographer Mauro Fiore (http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0278475/) and production designer Tom Duffield (http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0240468/). The film ends by suggesting that lust for revenge can warp righteous American patriots as well as Islamic fundamentalists. Still, this earnestly even-handed message is a bit of a cheat. Given the heinous actions of the terrorists, audiences are primed to cheer when they finally get blown to smithereens. We might cheer more loudly if The Kingdom were a more effective piece of rabble-rousing.
Fuck that review. I've seen it and it's a terrific piece of work. The opening and closing battle scenes are hard to watch. Not because they're filmed bad (they aren't) but because they're gut-wrenching.

just caught a documentary on PBS from the Independent Lens series about photographers from Cuba (both expatriate and those still there)
very interesting documentary. various images depicting life in cuba, outside of it, before and after the revolution, etc. some parts told through the lens of these photographers (both old school and new school)
a couple of notables were images from an apparent Monument to the Presidents where all that remained were foot prints of the statues that stood pre-Castro. and of course i love the images depicting the antique/old school cars, essentially pre-embargo time capsules that to this day are still in use.
very cool documentary, recommended.

Just came back from the Kingdom
Good movie
Flaws - very obvious. Way too much hand-held and jerky camera movements. They were unnecessary. I can understand having it used in action sequences. In fact I didn't mind it during the action scenes because I'm just so used to action being directed MTV style but during slow drama and dialogue scenes and ALL THE WAY throughout the entire movie?? Come on. I understand the intention which is the put is in the middle of the situation but its just overused. And a bit too many tight shots.
You can say that it is a good movie because I agree that it is. But saying that there was no shaky camera that really didn't annoy you at times?......thats just being guilty of denial. A poor directorial decision on Peter Berg's part. He's got a vision but for The Kingdom, his vision is blurred.
Other than that, its really is a good movie because the build up to the final scene is worth it. This is some serious raw action in the tradition of BHD.

Dude, Bay does the same thing.
Since when does Mr. Bay have too much caffeine when doing hand held camera work for a drama scene?
We got hand-held camera work, throughout the entirety of The Kingdom. Its just inappropriate and annoying. I can still watch the movie though and try to deal with it, which I did and in the end, I got a satisfying movie.
As for Michael Bay using it more appropriately, remember the hospital scene during the bombing of Pearl Harbor? When Kate Beckinsale helps a patient with a hole in his neck, the camera shakes violently in the point of view of the patient. Now that is when it is appropriate and Michael Bay is knows what he's doing and more importantly why he's filming it that way as opposed to jerking the camera for the sake of jerking the camera around.

I wasn't aware anything was used appropriately in Pearl Harbor. Bay's fast cuts during the character scenes are what killed Pearl Harbor. Yes, fast cuts can work well, but when you're dealing with characters you need to keep it to a minimum. Look at any of Bay's movies. They all do that.

You're absolutely right. He does it well. And Bay doesn't cut fast during character driven scenes. He does however cut fast enough so that a non action scene can be made looking like an intense action scene.
And yes I agree fast cuts work well, but when you're dealing with characters you need to keep it to a minimum........fine example of this point, since we're discussing it - The Kingdom. Alot of character driven scenes, but just poorly filmed.
I liked Peter Berg's visual style when he did The Rundown. The subject serious subject matter of The Kingdom did not need to be "MTVed" out

Tony Scott's Enemy of the State - the technology was amusingly dated, but the idea of invasion of privacy is eerily reminiscent of what's going on today. Another great Tony Scott action/thriller.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Quirky, but enjoyable. Don't panic.

Eastern Promises: Fine movie, not as good as some reviews say, but good anyway.
The Orphanage: Again not as good as some reviews say. Too much "i have seen this before" impression. Anyway a good and tense movie, maybe the best spanish horror/thriller movie ever.

Well, this deserves a larger comment.

-There's Milla

The not so fine things

-The plot isn't stupid. Being stupid involves existance
-The script isn't stupid. Being stupid involves existance
-Russell Mulcahy is a "not so good action director"
-Is not very spectacular or exciting

American Gangster
I don't know how I feel about this one. I guess I went in expecting brilliance, but left the theater wanting. The cinematography, to some extent, was kinda flat and cold. I couldn't connect with any characters up on the screen. That is not to say that the acting was bad. Denzel did his king kong bit, and Russell Crowe played it straight. The cast was deep, maybe too deep than it knew what to do with. There was tension, however, leading up to how they were gonna nab Lucas and his operation.
Personally, it felt like it was all about Frank Lucas "getting his" and that's it. They didn't portray him with enough redeeming qualities to justify getting rich off of heroin. They also didn't give enough to Richie Roberts to feel THAT sorry for the guy for being so dedicated. Who knows maybe that was their intention, but it was lost on me.
I wasn't necessarily bored, it just felt like something more was gonna happen throughout the movie, but didn't. Or perhaps that the payoffs come too quickly to enjoy.
The production design was excellent, I felt like I was in the 70's. The cars the clothes, the locations. The music was great!
Anyone else see it? Thoughts?

Yah. I just got back from seeing American Gangster tonight (or rather this morning) and it was an okay movie. Urgh... I hated the needle scenes. They were just cringe worthy. Other than that, the actors, plot, and production design were great but I really thought that there needed to be an "attention grabber" such as more action. Michael Bay is spoiling me! :D

Wonderful...the story is fantastic. It keeps you guessing then bam, it all comes together. Best game to movie ever. Its a little slow and drags at times but its entertaining. Surprisingly good acting too. The only thing that bugs me is that a shot in the trailer wasnt in the film. The one where he is holding the Dragunov on the roof as the wind blows flipping his red trademark tie; its cut short before they show him holding it up.
Be warned that if you are a fan of the game dont go in expecting it to be like it and dont trust the synopsis, its a little misleading. Agent 47 is an actual human in this one, not a clone. He is a cold hearted bastard though.

Just watched no country for old men. The Cohen brothers completely dropped the ball. There was a good amount of dialogue that was left out that really brought the book together and made the whole read worth while for me. With it taken out the movie was just a hollow shell. It had no real depth at all. I went to see it in champaign il and there was laughter from the crowd after the final scene. There is a part where chigurah goes in to talk to the guy whose money he was trying to retrieve in the movie he just goes into kill the guy for sending other people after the money. in the book chigurah was a free agent who set all this in motion so he could strike a deal with the guy.
There was a great interaction between chigurah and carla jean at the end of the movie that was cut to the bone and made the whole scene meaningless. the talk they had pretty much makes you think about what happens after that talk. I really wouldn't have been to disappointed with this movie if they had of kept certain dialogue in it. it was probably one of the most faithful book adaptions i have ever seen other than the fact they left out things that gave the movie it's point. However, because of that i have to say it was a bad movie. I will never understand why hollywood chooses to change things that don't need to be changed. Considering this was more of an independent/arthouse film it seems like a few extra minutes of dialouge and cutting out some unnecassary visual scenes with no dialogue would have served the story better.

GAH! I forgot about it too!! And I just saw the preview last night.... wow. Where is my mind?
Yah I know and sympathize with the writers on why they're striking. Basically I'm mad at the Producers because couldn't they end the strike if they agreed to what the writers are asking of them? Gr..
Kt
What makes it worse is that there's no deal in sight, and if it drags on into mid-2008, the actors will strike too. :(
BTW, what preview did you see of the Dark Knight last night? The one with just the audio of Alfred, Bruce, and the Joker...or a new one?

I think I've seen both. I saw the audio version in theaters but I've seen the new one on Youtube... at least I might've. I dunno. There are tons of fakes.
Yah the writer's strike doesn't look like it's ending anytime soon... *sarcasm is evident* GOODBYE HOLLYWOOD!! :(

Yes, some of that stuff could be found. But ones are too light (against authority) and others too obvious and exagerated (the equivalent of the Pope is like an evil emperor who wants to rule the world and who kindnapps and kills children)
Anyway, in my opinion there's no reason for boycotting, just defends freedom of thinking.
Really deserves boycotting due to the storytelling LoL

I saw The Orphanage two days ago at a great little indie theatre up the street from myself and it is still "with me" if you get my drift. I was really impressed by the atmosphere of this movie and the way it delivered its shocks. It thought it might feel like a rehash of a lot of other things, with the ghost children, the deformed kid, etc, but it really wasn't. It was a very unique thing. I know a few people were turned off by its semi-explanatory ending but I was so moved by the woman's plight I didn't care about that. It's very intense, very good. I recommend it. I'm being kinda vague because I don't want to spoil any more than I kinda-sorta have!

I think Sly's Rambo deserves to be seen. Is not a funny movie, not an entertaining show. Not just a movie about shooting. It's a harsh and sad movie that tells a story about our inner evil... and well, with some gory and truly violent scenes. Here violence is not funny or beautiful, is something macabre, awful.
Sly tells more with his easy story line and his sharp violence than many pedantic "auteurs" would achieve in their whole life.

Rambo - I didn't think it was too bloody. I mean if a Barrett M107 .50 caliber sniper rifle shoots someone in the head its going to explode. The mg at the end is the same caliber so it going to leave huge holes in a body too. I would say this movie kicked some major ass. I loved it. The story was great and the way Stallone portrayed Rambo being of old age and thoughtful was just fantastic. During the mg shoot we didn't get the lame ass yelling while shooting a big gun into a huge crowd scene. He actually had to reload and kept it cool taking his shots respectively. That was awesome. I really liked the end were he decided between the road and home. This movie deserves to be on par with Rocky; a great ending of a series to two iconic characters. Stallone is the fucking man.
No Country for Old Men - Good movie but forgettable. I'm not impressed. Yea it had great acting and such like everyone says but its boring. Not worth a second seeing. If this movie did not have such a good villain it would be trash. I felt in every scene I was waiting for him to return just to see him kill someone or antagonize them. Every time he kept saying "Call it." I kept thinking this would be Two-Face in a new Batman movie. I don't hype movies up until I see them but ultimately I was disappointed in this one.

I'd have to agree with your boyfriend. "Snakes on a plane" was a pure waste of time. It's so deliberately striving to be campy, that ultimately it fails on all accounts. Actually, I couldn't name a single redeeming quality about this movie. There are films you can enjoy with some buddies and a crate of beer - "Snakes" was aiming for that I guess - but ironically by trying to hard to cater to the AICN-crowd, this plane took a crash-landing.
Oh, and just to stay more on topic: Last movies I've seen (again) were "Casino Royale" (on of the best Bonds so far), "Blue Thunder" (a classic) and "Be Kind Rewind" (enjoyable, but ultimately disappointing).

Thanks for the tip, ...and that's why I don't read the books....to avoid utter disappointment :p
I'll watch it anyways...and let you know
The bourne trilogy was amazing. It kept me focused, and excited throughout the series....After seeing the first, we rented the other two and watched them back to back a few months ago. I can't believe I waited so long to see it either. Damon was perfect for the role.

Books are generally better than the movies.
I think anyways.

because of the imagination factor........don't have to worry about how to put it on screen, and how much money to spend
I just simply don't have time for both....and since I'm a guy......its all about the visuals:p........where as women are such audible creatures;)

Yes, watch it. Definitely.
I've reordered my Netflix queue to get the other two asap. I'm really interested in this trilogy after seeing the awesome-ness of the first one.

Well, we watched jumper last night and..................................don't waste your time with this movie.
Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic!
The whole movie just seemed like a 13 episode tv series crammed into a movie.
...glad I didn't pay money to see it

"The Bourne Identity" didn't really grab me, so I gave "The Bourne Supremacy" a pass. I saw extended clips of "The Bourne Ultimatum" at a trade show (amongst others, the chase at the London train station) and decided to give it a chance. Glad I did, it's one of the finest action thrillers ever, even if it loses some plausibilty towards the end.
Haven't had a chance to catch up on part two. I bought it on DVD right after having seen "Ultimatum" but when I looked for it some weeks later, I was unable to find it. Only the receipt turned up, which at least gives me confidence that it is safely tucked away with all the other movies... ;)
Last movie I saw: "The Kingdom". (Again.) Great, simply great. Action with at least some brains. How often do you get that?

I would say...Transformers (Of course. XD), then it would be Howl's Moving Castle...The Fifth Element (God I love/hate that idiotic DJ guy. XDD)...I Robot...Has anyone seen Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children? CG rocks!

Advent Children does own on all fronts. I remember when they released the FFVII remade trailer for Ps3, everytone got so hyped about a remake, evil Square.
Juno - Great film. Original but funny, loved it.
Highlander The Source - Waste of a good franchise. Crap.

Yup, beautiful film.
Confused the hell out of me (cuz I didn't know what the hell was going on half the time), but beautifully shot/edited (whatever the correct term is.)

The first "Highlander" is a classic, a movie I certainly have watched a dozen times or so and own on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD. The sequels are - in my opinion - utter dreck, especially "Highlander III". "Highlander: Endgame" was bearable.
Last movie: "Blades of Glory". Surprisingly entertaining.

Didn't much care for Highlander movies. I could never understand why they didn't walk around with metal callers. I know I knew people were out to kill me, and I only had one weak spot, I would damn well protect it.

My last movie theater experience is with Transformers, and though that has been a while it holds very strong for me. I was in the theater enjoying my last family outting when my husband passed away and my life went to h**l in a hen basket. the movie renewed my love of transformers and because i have to take my kids with me to the theater it has to be a worthy movie to dish out the moola it takes for three people to go.

Sorry to hear that shade, but things will get better,at least your sons are their with you and as they get older will shoulder some burdens hopefully. But on recently seen movies I watched a movie called one hr,not yet released. it stared david carridine(kung fu) DMX(the rapper)Micheal madsen(resevior dogs/Kill bill volume 1 and 2) tommy wong, paul sorvino and kobe(I think she was a porn star)Well the movie seemed a bit rushed as far as story production, and acting goes,But the who done it was kinda cool.By the end though I'm not really sure I understood what took place.slightly confusing with all the plot twists.

That must have been a tough time for you. I lost my only brother years ago, so I think I can understand how you feel.
Also speaking as one who grew up in a single parent family, I can say mothers are most beautiful and bright heroes to their children. I and my brother used to think of ourselves as something like brave little soldiers to support and protect our honorable lady. So i guess you're greatly admired by your sons. :)
Welcome to the boards!

True sora...Me and my brother were raised by my mother from the age of thirteen on.(Those years were tuff for her;Me and my brother were mean.):(:o.But we both grew to have nothing but the highest respect and regard for her sacrifices and as a person/indavidual in society.:)

Therefore I like the phrase "A single mother is a sacred thing" in the movie Jerry Maguire. ;)
BTW, finally 2007's movies came out to theaters here this week.
No Countries for Old Men, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Jumper, Golden Compass, Enchanted..
But not Cloverfield yet. So, I saw The Golden Compass and Enchanted with my daughter yesterday.
The Golden Compass: Damn ice bears! (Personally I felt this movie was not my cup of tea)
Enchanted: After watching this movie, my daughter has been laughing at me like,
"Mom, I bet you'd sing this song (http://www.amazon.com/True-Loves-Kiss/dp/B00138IZNM) to that huge poster (http://solaryear.deviantart.com/journal/16323583/) like ~Does he need lips? Of course! He doesn't need battlemask!~http://news.soraya.jp/images/love_v.gif hee ha ha!"
