I heard the Writer's Strike is going to overlap a Director's/Actor's strike, is that true?

It's going to be bad for actors if it's so. It'll clear the way for new careers and brushing aside of egos. (If that's possible)

i wish i knew how the system worked

Because from what I understand, actors and directors have been offered different amounts of money for whatever roles they played.

And I don't understand the reason to strike because aren't they getting paid enough?

So I guess this is just a vacation for show business.

As far as a potential strike making way for new talent and booting old talent out of the way and adjusting their egos. I don’t see this happening ever. Any new talent that is hired during the strike will probably either be forced to join the guild, and then in turn forced to abide the strike, OR black listed form the guild and never be able to work again after the strike.

And then the comment about "aren’t actors payed enough". To respond to that, a very select few are. Most actors are living film to film making just enough money to put food on the table, and majority not even that and work second jobs. Just because A and B list actors make enough to make a living doesn’t mean that how much everybody makes. There are many many actors that work as actors for their career that have neither fame nor fortune, just a love of film and acting/directing.

Amen to that last part, but I doubt someone would get black listed for not striking. Last black list guy I know was put there for using the title of line producer to sell his services as a photographer and taking less than clean photos of young women. I would also think that anyone who got a SAG certified job would choose not to join the union until the strike is over just to avoid stepping on toes.

I really want to see how this turns out though. I wont renew membership if i goes this way. I'll just wait it out.

I'll start a thread in film making about this. With all of us here what one person doesn't know there is bound to be someone else who does. Between SAG and the Directors Guild we probably have this covered with a little bit of help from forum members.

Yeah, iv never heard specific unions listed in the horror stories I’ve heard. I doubt that SAG or DGA would do that, but I don’t personally know. I do know that some crew unions have done this though. There is a story I heard from I THINK the guy that made hostel (but don’t quote me on that, I could be getting my podcasts mixed up :P) lol. but somebody on the creative screenwriting podcast mentioned how they were making a film independently and the unions came in to the crew and said "Either sign the union slip and become part of the union or we will blacklist you and you'll never ever be able to work in Hollywood". so the crew obviously did, and they independent production could no longer afford them and the movie shut down, and I guess stuff like that happens a lot from how this person made it out to be. So thats kind of where I got that from as a potential scenario. But like i said, he never mentioned which union did that so doubt SAG and DGA do such things, but never know lol.

edit Note: Went back and checked and it WAS Eli Roth, writer/director of hostel, who made the union comment. He was talking about when he was filming cabin feaver indipendently. You can check out his comments on the situation on the creative screenwriting podcast at about 16:30 into the podcast about Hostel with Eli Roth posted 1/6/06.

So I was watching Conan O' Brian last night (techniquely this morning) and he said that the strike is starting Monday... depending on how negotiations go.

Urgh... I really don't want to watch THAT MUCH reality television (which is what we're gonna see A LOT OF).:(
