I've always debated myself about which one I like better and its honestly very hard to decide.
In Bad Boys you got great chemistry between both characters and a very good combination of action and comedy. And the movie delivered with such a small budget of $9 million
In Bad Boys 2, the chemistry between both characters that we loved in the first one was severely lacking and charm and comedy banter that was so dominant in the first was less prevailant in the sequel. However it is made up for with the onslaught of wild and over-the-top crazy action sequences including violent street shootouts and one of the most exciting car chases of all time. And all done with a budget of $130 million
When I walked out of the theater in BB2, I felt, that was really cool and funny and I had a good time. But I only thought about the action and less about the characters. I still ranked BB2 higher than BB on my list of Michael Bay favorites. But I just recently watched both again and I felt that I enjoyed the characters more than the action in the first one. I felt that the action in the first movie suited the character's personalities more in the first one than the second one.
The first one, I could watch it from beginning to end. For the second one, sometimes, I just feel like fast forwarding to the next action scene. I'm just being honest. I do love both movies but I think I've really come to appreciate characters more than action.
But for some reason, in a movie like Transformers for example, I just want to see action Haha!
I guess with Bad Boys, it started out with great likeable characters and I wanted that tradition to follow to throughout its sequel(s).

Critics have pointed to BB2 as the film Bay was born to make, much like TF. As i've stated in other threads, there are 2 or 3 scenes in BB2 that are funnier than BB1 as a whole, i.e. the infamous Reggie scene, maybe the Phat Video scene. I care more about the characters in part 2 honestly, they're getting older and have more issues, i was honestly a lil upset when Marcus told Mike that he's put in transfer papers. Don't get me wrong, BB1 is great, but at this point, more for the sake of nostalgia. I mean it holds up well in the 13 years that have past, but BB2 takes what BB1 was and multiples it times 10, ala T1 vs. T2.
I feel the characters are still there in part 2, but as a friend pointed out, BB1 was more about who can upstage whom? Will or Martin? Martin being in what would be his prime in 1995 with his TV show, Will just getting big, but not "Will Smith" yet. So you kind of have a battle of there egos in part 1, where as part 2? Well, obviously Smith is the box office draw, Martin? Not so much.
The films biggest failing is the length, i swear i heard people groan in the theatres when the movie heads to Cuba and doesn't wrap up earlier. I, too, feel the length is the only negative the movie really has, but unlike Darth Rage, i'm to much of a geek to skip chapters, if i start a movie, i watch it all. The first film also has the advantage of being Bays' shortest film by like 15 minutes.
So in closing i will say what i've said half a dozen times now, do NOT make a BB3! Stop while your ahead!

BB2 was just a more entertaining film to me. I actually saw it on a whim because the first film had no real impact to me, and I didn't know the name Michael Bay yet. except for the explosions, most of the action was believable and felt real to me, and that's why I fell in love with the film.

BB2 definitely has bigger better action
But BB1 has that scene where Teresa catches all 3 of them in Mike's apartment. Mike's reaction to Teresa was priceless, with his hands over his mouth LOL!!
And also "freeze mother bitchers!!!" HAHAH!

BB2 by far... Just cause Tea Leoni' character was so unbearably annoying... I can barely watch the scenes with her in it...

BB2 pales in comparison to the first. Bad Boys I was simply a good movie. BB2 just seemed like Bay venting, plus the score ruined it. Fun to watch, but not as much heart at the first.

BB2 was definitely a fun movie. Very entertaining.
But in a way, I feel the same way about BB2 is Bay doing what he loves and its a way of him giving the finger to the critics and just having fun with the movie.
Yeah the score was also lacking. There was really nothing memorable about it because it lacked a main "hero" theme.

Considering most people I know don't like him, It seems I would either like him for the wrong reasons or not like him at all.

That's a pretty bold statment, please explain to me why i have inferior taste for liking one of the best action movies of the decade, maybe of all time.
And if you're going to give me the "the first one had more heart" reason, please be more specific. The second one had more heart, by far actually. Marcus's conflict with wether or not he should be reassigned coupled with the protective bond he had with his sister and resulting conflict with Mike make the 2nd one more heartfelt, and my favorite Martin Lawerence performance to date. Sorry, i think you're wrong.

Kinda difficult to explain but I'll give it a shot.
Bad Boys was a very special movie for me. I went to see it for three reasons. First two, I was at the time a very big fan of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Thirdly, and most importantly, Mark Mancina and Speed.
The movie Speed in way, kicked off my interest in becoming a filmmaker. For whatever reason, I fell in love with that film. Much of the reason behind that was Mark Mancina's brilliant score. I didn't really pay attention to stuff like that at the time but something about Mancina's score triggered something. I would watch that movie over and over when it came out on video. I even recorded the audio onto cassette tapes and listen to the film on my walkman very often, so the audio and score stuck to me even more. While I was already pumped to see Bad Boys, it wasn't until I discovered that Mancina did the score that I got really excited about seeing it.
I think I was about 15 when Bad Boys came out so I remember having to sneak in with a friend. It's an experience I'll remember forever. The opening scene was what I thought at the time one of the coolest scenes I've ever watched. With the the 7 fucks within 3 minutes we were both laughing with our jaws dropped. It was awesome! We liked it so much we snuck in the next day to see it again. Then as with Speed, I got the video, made audio tapes, and listened to to...A LOT! At one point I had memorized every line, new which shot was coming next and knew when and where the music cues would drop. I knew that film like the back of my hand.
My favorite parts were always the title sequence/opening robbery and the chase sequences. They were married so well with the score it often times felt like watching a musical, especially with the title sequence which is much like an overture.
With the mix of the score, cinematography, humor and characters, the movie took on such grace and personality that it almost became a part of me. In a way it did. I often time find myself being very emotionally attached to my favorite films. Bad Boys changed my life.
I was yearning for a sequel from the very beginning and eventually the announcement was made which made me very happy. I couldn't wait! My only fear was that it wasn't going to feel like the first movie.
My fears were quickly squashed when the trailers came out. They were perfect! It looked great and "felt" just like the Bad Boys that I loved oh so well. The chemistry between Will and Martin was spot on and the music fit very well. Then came the tragic news that Mancina was leaving the film only months before release. I got really nervous after that point. Mancina's score in the first film to me was like the glue that kept it all together and flowing.
Seeing BBII was a very bittersweet experience. Did I like it? Yes, very much. But deep down inside it just didn't "feel" right. From the very first few seconds of the film it felt so wrong without hearing that opening guitar lick. The logo was also...different... But I kept an open mind and tried my best to enjoy it. As we got into it I realized that they took Will's and Martin's characters and blew them up to the extreme, almost mocking themselves from the first film. Mike was a hyper triggerhappy action junkie that just wanted to shoot everyone. While Marcus was a supper whiney little bitch. They were the characters from the first film but only x100. WTF? It seemed like they expanded on their characters so much that what made those characters great in the first place got lost inside their crazy new ego.
The action in the film was great, it just seems like too much emphasis went into that over the rest of the story. Don't get me wrong, the highway car carrier scene I still thing to this day it the single best action sequence of all time in any film, but it doesn't make up for the rest. Fuchet was such a better bad guy than pretty boy Jordi Molla.
What I wanted was a true sequel that had the same elegance, grace, flare, and "feel" of the first. BB2 had none of those. It was a completely different film with the same lead actors. It wasn't true to itself. It was mentioned in many places that Bay's intent with this film was just to go nuts and make it bigger and badder and a basic fuck you to hollywood. And while I don't remember where that came from, in retrospect that's kind what I felt like.
To me it seem rushed, as if studio pressure drove Bay to not care. It just seems like BB2 should have been so much more than what we got. It easily ranks as my least favorite Bay film.
Oh yeah, let's not forget my issue with the score. By far the weakest part of the film. The initial trailers did have some of Mancina's work in them and that's why they felt so great to me. The score in BB2 was almost non-existent. Was there even a theme? If there was I sure as heck can't hum it for you. Plus all the extra shit produced by Dr. Dre seemed rushed and completely underproduced. It made me cringe. It completely cheapened and ruined the film for me. Part of what drove me to my little Mancina re-edit project. All the issues aside, I think if Mancina had remained on board, a lot of my problems with the film would have been smoothened out to a degree. But hey, what can I do? Personally, the film I waited so long for and was so excited to see ended up being a huge heartbreaking disappointment.
It's almost like trying to like Indy 4, I just can't do it.
Hope that helps! :lol

100% agree with you on Bad Boys. My experience mirrors yours (even my gripes with the second), including the Speed part. Mancina killed with both scores, back in the day. (with the exception of the film making aspirations)
However, being such a personal experience, its as almost as if people have to like Bay (and BB2) according to someone else's terms/reasons. Which I have to disagree with.
I'm actually tired of comparing/having to pick between the two (or justifying why one is better than the other) because these days, not to get too Rodney King on everybody, they are able to get along/co-exist on my shelf just fine. :D

YES YES AND YES. OMG that DID kill alot of the moments for me, i love that song, but overplayed to the extreme. Yea, i guess you're right though, the score was pretty non-exsistant. Same thing that i complains about with X1 and X2, or Spiderman, which was Elfman, the man in charge for some of my all time favorite scores, first time i've been really genuniely let down with a film's score.

I'm not wanting to pick a fight or anything but I'm so sick of hearing about Mark Mancina.:wtf I can not recall a single piece of score of BB1. But for some reason I keep people hearing his absense as being the reason they prefer 1 over 2. I'm not oblivious to movie scores. I have a pretty large collection of scores that actually do make an impact with me. But in the 5 or 6 times I've seen BB1 I can't recall a single bar of score.

There's a bit I really like during the opening credits but apart from that it's not something about BB that stood out for me....
And the statement that 'The ones that like BB2 better like Bay for all the wrong reasons.'
Is the biggest bullshit statement I've heard in a long time...
So Jester... If we don't like Michael Bay for the same reasons you do we're not intitled to be fans or something?

I'm simply stating how strongly i feel about the film, not saying you're all fans for the wrong reasons if you don't agree with me....
