I saw the film when it came out on DVD, and knew it was based on a series, and also Thought it was a good film. Space Pirates, a loony crew, great story and I could see this happening (assuming Tera-Farming/Forming is truely a future reality). But, I forgot about the movie because of work at the time, but I saw it on HBO this morning (Couldn't Sleep). I thought to myself wow, I like this.
O.K. so this is a random post, but did anyone else see the flick and think ,"Wow, great idea!"? Also any clue what series it was based on? B/c knowing the nerds (yes fanboys will be mentioned) the film was compared to the series, which I didn't see, and people will be saying that it didn't measure up. But, does anyone here know enough about the t.v. series or mythos around it to clarify why in the heck this film didn't receive anymore of a welcoming than what it did. I was pretty impressed with it...

ya, it's based on Firefly...an amazingly well written show.
firefly was canceled, cause well...it's FOX, and they cancel all good shows. But most importantly, they ran the episodes out of chronological order (who the fuck runs FOX). On top of that, they put it in one of the worst time slots, and pitted it up against big shows at the time. Plus it was an expensive ass show to make. So FOX did what they do best, and canceled it.
As for the movie, for some reason Sci-Fi just doesn't seem to do that well, the story may have been a tad confusing to some people. There is a lot of backstory in the movie that the show covered, that was barely touched upon in the movie. Book was barely in the movie, and he is very fleshed out in the show.

I liked it but I didn't see it going past 2 seasons. Would have been better off as a high production mini-series.

Yeah, Firefly was a great show. I consider myself a Browncoat by the by. I really like the way the whole thing both the show and movie were filmed, it's done in that slightly shakey, almost documentary type of thing. Also, the way the show was filmed and the special effects play a big part in the shaping of the new Battlestar Galactica. They went as far as having the ship Serenity in a scene from the BSG pilot.
Great bit of film making, Joss usually delivers but what I enjoyed most was the dialouge. Very real, very immediate and believable. Also, taking budget into consideration it's amazing the show came out so great.
I certainly recommend checking out the series if you have not this far. If you like the movie it's that but in more detail and character development ... since they have a whole season to do it.

I don't now any of the backstory, but it was pretty easy to pick-up. Reavers and all. The only thing I could see is people not catching that River is a Psychic weapon until the very end pilot scene. But, it wasn't something that was obscure.
As far as the dialogue '"Bullet to the brain pan..." thats a kick ass freakish line, and some of Rivers other lines like ," I hear them all and they aren't saying anything". Another perplexing but cool way to word what she is thinking.
And yea mini series would have been great. HBO n e one?

good luck on FOX ever giving up the rights to the show...they'll hold on to them, even though they'll never touch them...god i hate FOX....they really do have stupid people running that company...not to mention Rupert Murdoch should probably just go crawl in a corner somewhere and die.

Serenity is an amazing film, and the show Firefly was just as brilliant. I bought the Firefly series on DVD, too. I recommend it for those that haven't seen it. It's well well worth it. FOX fucked it up when they placed it on a Friday night.
The reason the series ran out of order was because at the last minute FOX got afraid of the pilot and went straight to the 2nd show so that people would be immediately involved.

Actually there's quite a bit more backstory than that in the show man. Mal's gotta put together his crew, his run ins with his "wife", the war they lost. Hell, just Jayne alone is worth watching the series for, there's a couple good episodes about him being either thief or hero/freedom fighter.

There was a backstory in Firefly, but it was canceled to early. Some things could be seen in the Firefly comics wich are betwen the last chapter and the movie.
It was one of the best shows i've ever seen. Can't understand why did Fox mistreat it.
Also Serenity rocks, also can't understand the low box office numbers (39M $ worldwide).

No iddin. I loved it when I first saw the DVD, but at lie 6am It was on HBO I watched it intently and thought DAMN... Star Wars before it was screwed up by CGI... So the series is on sale for DVD? I love Rivers lines, and Jane... well Jane kicks ass. If not for the v/o editing you'd prolly hear some really funny shit. But, those who pay attention to that stuff already know what I mean...
I still like the "nothin betwix my nethers that didn't run on batteries line" then at the end she says "SEX!".... "I'm gonna live!". It's the small details. Definately something there should be a sequel too it is one hell of a launch vehicle for a good series of at least 2 more films... especially since fox doesn't have hold of it.
Wedding Beals... GOOD GOD... that was another series fuced from the go. And that other series Fire in the Sky (circa 1997) about aliens on earth, and then the show about (I forget the whole thing) but eggs from below... But don't forget though they ept on worse shows. Face it... it's all money. NBC kept Joey past a 2nd season... damn that show blew...
Anyone see Cavemen?

Well, when you're the most bad ass person alive, you can be on whatever show you want. You see he's playing a doctor. So he's doing what he does best...saving people. ;)

Wow, I really got the feeling that Jayne was a conflicted dude. But, I love his lines. It is on HBO right now so =D I'm checking it out. The cool thing is the idea that The Galaxy vs the Universe. If we do hit space travel lie this some day... life will be similar. You have to prepare because itll be like the old days when if you got lost at sea you had no supplies and would die. The other aspect is that space is infinite in ALL directions. UP, Down, Left Right all directions. I want to see more of this. Whats some othe rwor by the director/writer?
SIDE NOTE: Reciently the space craft w/ the golden discs (Viking I think), but it has suddenly started picking up speed. Leading some people to believe that space is a giant curve, and unlike the earth as it goes and expands the concave nature of space gets more thin leaving less ground to cover in the same ammount of time. So it's not speeding up, distance is just getting shorter. Crazy thought eh?

Ah, gotcha. I just new there was something wierd going on with em. Viking was to Mars right? Then on to Saturn I think. They burnt it up since it was running outta fuel.
But did you hear about the picking up speed thing?
