It's no secret that Kevin Smith is not a fan of Armageddon or Pearl Harbor, but anyone know his thoughts on Bay as an overall director or Transformers?

I'm a massive fan of both directors, I don't think they could be anymore different. Kinda makes me wonder of what they think of each other.

In the sequel to "An Evening with Kevin Smith," he's talking about working on a project with Ben Affleck in which a part calls for Ben to cry.

Ben tells him "Michael Bay doesn't make me cry.."

To which Smith replies: "He so makes me cry..."

That said, I once read somewhere Affleck took Smith to see the set of Armageddon. So maybe he met Mike there.

I read on AICN that Bruce Willis was talking shit on their forums about Bay in regards to Bay being offered Die Hard 4 first, i didn't ever read what Willis said, but i remember hearing Bay's reaction to it being something along the lines of "Wow, i hope he didn't mean it, we've kept in touch since Arm." Anyone know what was said?

p.s. Kevin Smith used to have talent, but now he seems way to scared to leave his comfort zone and trying something new, different.

Uhm... the conversation is about Kevin Smith not Willis.

Let's stay on topic please.

I like both directors, but I swear to god after Clerks II I went off of Smith. I'm a big Jay and Silent Bob fan, but man I'm so fucking sick of people that think animal sex story ideas are actually funny. And it was like the whole "oh what can I talk about that will offend the most people?". "Oh lets make funny conversations about ass-to-mouth". Hah hah. Yes, hillarious... The whole humour was just getting so forced and tired. I mean look at Bay in comparison in Bad Boys 2. That whole scene in the video store where they were talking about what Smith did to Lawrences ass was fucking priceless. Offensive in one respect, but so cleverly done, and well integrated to the story.

I loved J&SB Strike Back. Mallrats is actually my favourite. Dogma - I like it, but too much religion and the whiny fiorentino got on my nerves. The supporting cast made it good. The lead actress sucked.

Chasing Amy, Clerks, Mallrats, J&SB Strike Back are the only good ones. Oh, the Clerks tv show was decent. I can't stand Smith now, just like Tim Burton, they've become 1 trick ponies.

edit - > yes, another thing i hate about Smith is how funny he thinks he is. I remember him saying that Clerks 2 was the funniest thing he'd ever written, and, no, obviously it wasn't. He's a dick and fart comedian, the end. I can't stand it when directors or producers come out and tell you how great there work is. Like Joel Silver saying Matrix Reloaded had set the bar so high that there is no bar anymore! Um, the Matrix sequels were worthless Joel, almost on the level of Episode 1 worthlessness in fact. Ok, tirade over.

Kevin Smith said something like "Directors like Michael Bay get a lot of shit, but I could never do the thing that they do. Direct all those major action scenes and get that big of an audience to see your flick" in an interview I've read which atleast shows he has some respect for Michael. There is also a video on Youtube (don't know if it's still there) from ComicCon last summer where he was asked if he saw Transformers and he went on on how he saw Harry Potter and TF the same day and enjoyed Potter a lot more, saying he only saw TF to see "shit turn into other shit" :D since he never saw/liked the cartoon. I got the impression he thought it was kind of a so-so movie.

Where has he said he didn't like Armageddon? Besides, what he sais on the Evening with...-videos I take with a grain of salt. I think it was big fun for him to see his buddy Affleck save the world with Bruce Willis ;) I mean, on the audio commentary to Chasing Amy, which was recorded before Armageddon came out he goes on how Ben was going to star in this big upcoming epic from Michael Bay. He seemed proud over that considering Bay and Bruckheimer, I think, has claimed they picked Ben because they liked Chasing Amy.

He was once offered the chance to direct The Green Hornet. He immediatley jumped at the chance as he was such a huge fan of the character. Then when the budget rose and rose, he dropped out because after the commercial/ego-fuelled crew he worked with on Jersey Girl, he wasn't enjoying making films anymore. Also he admitted he wouldn't know when to begin when making a blockbuster. He then started developing Clerks 2 because he wants to make films that mean something to him and he knows his limits as a film maker. I respect him for that... there are too many film makers jumping on to projects that are too big/advanced for them resulting in fucking up the final film. He's the best at what he does.

On the Jersey Girl commentary him and Ben Affleck poke fun at Armageddon. Not in a nasty way, but like a 'whoa this movie is so stupid' way. Also takes the piss out of him for Pearl Harbor... which Matt Damon did too in an Empire article. Gahhhhh!!!! Why don't people get Pearl Harbor???

LOL i love it. I love that Affleck can laugh at the shit movies he's made, Pearl Harbor being #1, easily. In J&SBSB i loved the part where he reprises the Holden character from Amy and says "Affleck was the BOMB in PHANTOMS, YO!" That killed me.

Smith and Jason Lee said YEARS ago, prior to the Hornet debacle, that they were going to make a Fletch prequel called Fletch Won. Guess they never got around to it....

Yeah, I have a lot of respect for Affleck. I mean he isn't pretentious at all. He is so classic in the Mallrats commentary, and in Mallrats. In the commentary he is watching the opening credit and going "Man I did this film as a favour for you, and you show me as Butt-man!". It was hilarious.

At first I did not like Bay's movies at all but that completely turned around with Bad Boys 2, which I thought was fun ride and The Island was good as well. Transformers I liked, though I hated the jive talking and street dancing Jazz and the little robot.

It seems that Bay has begun to relax a little and not take himself so seriously, as evident in the Verizon commercial and the Australian Bank commercial, both which are hilarious.

Yeah you are right about him having a sense of humour. He seems so NOT full of himself it is great.

I didn't care much for Jazz either, but I guess that was the character.

I want to hear more about this. What do they say exactly?

Clerks II might be my favourite Smith-movie BTW. Donkey show excluded. I think Kevin put things like that in to top himself because he somehow thinks the only reason fans like his films is things like that, which is not the case. One of the reason Clerks and Mallrats have such a loyal fanbase is because they're the ultimate "Slacker who loves comic books, works at a department store and hangs out of the mall"-type of movies. The rest of Clerks II is actually a very funny (even funnier than the original in my fucked up opinion) movie, but also with a heart; the jail scene in the end with Jeff Anderson's monolugue is just great. It's more moving than anything Kevin has ever done.

Jersey Girl is probably his weakest. I know that they were set out to make a Chasing Amy mixture of drama and comedy but the movie is closer to a romantic comedy/chick flick. Kevin should have deleted Liv Tyler's role completely and focused entirely on Ben, his daughter and perhaps a close of friend of his (played by Jeff Anderon perhaps) and it would have been better.

I'd say it's one of his better films. I wouldn't really call it a chick flick. J-Lo dies in the first 10 mins, and theres only about 20 mins of actual love interest between Ben and Liv. The rest of the film is purely about the relationship between a father and daughter and loss. Also takes the piss out of everything too which is great.

Gotta agree with Clerks II though. Awesome film.

I've got to catch up on my Kevin Smith movies.

I loved Dogma, but just caught Clerks II on TV and oh my God, it's freakin' hilarious.

Must borrow an Evening With Kevin Smith and the sequel from my coworker.

And Jersey Girl....sucked. Horribly.

I'm looking forward to see his next flick - Zack and Miri make a Porno :D

I like Seth Rogen so it's going to be cool to see him in a Kevin Smith-flick. Will be fun to see Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson playing other characters than Jay and Randel also.

Well..... I wouldn't quite call it a "I hate God" team... to me it was more like... "We got in trouble for disobeying God, we got caught, were being punished, so now were going to spite Him" team. Kinda like how I feel towards cops all the time for giving me those stupid things called speeding tickets.. I mean for goodness sake.. who cares if I go 90 mph on the Interstate.. not like I ever crash at all.. and I slow down if cars get jammed up.. so whats the problem? stupid cops..
