The Golden Compass?
The Golden Compass....you got to be kidding.
A movie that bombed and that nobody liked
gets the visual effect award that everyone and
their mom agree'd should have gone to Transformers.
I am sick of the politics of Hollywood.
At the film school I go to in Hollywood (I won't mention
the name but you can guess which one), at the mention
of Michael Bay teachers get pissy and say what a hack he is.
WTF is everybody's deal. If Scorsese shot his movies like
Bay, they would be fine with it.
These snobs are jealous of Mike and his talent because he is
successful, and the general masses of people love his movies.
Mike, you rock.

damn rights! I hear fans talk all sorts of bs too. If it wern't for micheal, transformers would have been put to shame and 10x over again. People should be grateful that he made this film a hit (even though it didn't win.):(
Myself, I used to think Transformers sucked, but until i saw bay's version, man it just blew me away! And ive been a dedicated fan ever since. Mike I also love your other movies, Bad boys 1,2 and Armagedon. Keep it up. And if hollywood or other ungratefull people say it sucks, they can take their comments and shove it up ther fat a**es.

This has nothing to do with how good the movie is. Its all about the effects. Once I see the Golden Compass I'll pass judgment but to not see it and pass judgment on effects is a fools decision.

kinda in the same boat.
I'm a Sequential Art major and here, story telling is EVERYTHING. Bay gets hated on here because his is a bad story teller and relies on effects to make people like his movies... at least that is the story. Personally I love the story telling in Bad Boys II and the rock as well, The others (including Transformers) seem kind of weak, too me. other than story telling, I really enjoy Michaels editing style and over all look.

I was watching the special features on the Transformers DVD and when they show him shooting scenes I was like "Holy crap! This guy is amazing!"
I don't know what so many people have against him. Who doesn't like massive action packed movies?
Looking forward to Transformers 2. Maybe this time it will make the Academy think twice before handing that visual effects award to any old CGI picture like Golden Compass.

I think the technical term for it is people with poles up their asses.
I used to be one of them. I'm pretty embarassed to say now that I actually despised the work of Michael Bay. I'm not joking. I'd watch arthouse film and sneer at Bay. But that was in the VHS TV days, and even in the early DVD days. When I got my first widescreen TV and started enjoying progressive widescreen films, I suddenly found myself thinking whoah, look at how awesome this actually is, in all it's glory. And with HD it just got better. I used to think that the visual aspect of movies was secondary to the mental aspects of it, as up until then the visual aspects of it in a home environment were basically shit. So I used to concentrate on shit that made me think.
Now I can just appreciate the more complete full technical vision. It is fucking awesome.

You know. I do appreciate your input and insight in story telling. It's good to see independent thought here. You're right, Bay's movies are all about the eyegasms...but I have enjoyed all his films... weak story or not.
In the case of transformers.......I think everyone would have shit their pants in theatres if Bay and Co did something like THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B45xdKewFwA)

Actually, I don't see what the fuzz is about. Although I totally agree that the FX-Oscar should have gone to "Transformers", giving it to "The Golden Compass" is not something that was entirely out of the question. The movie may or may not suck (I haven't seen it and certainly don't intend to) but from what I HAVE seen, the polar bears and other effects looked convinicing enough to be eligible for an Academy Award. Btw, give some credit to "Golden Compass" - I love this movie for being one of the reasons "The Hobbit" got greenlighted faster than expected after Jackson's and New Lines' troubles ;) And don't forget - the Oscar wouldn't have gone to Bay directly, but to the effects people.
The Oscar votes have always and will always be a matter of personal sympathy and politics. And success naturally creates not only sympathy but envy... That being said, Bay's films have regularly been nominated for the industry's top honor (amongst many others), and "Pearl Harbor" actually won an Oscar. So I wouldn't go so far as to say that Bay is looked down upon by a majority of Hollywood. Not the least bit. (Furthermore, it seems to me that people tend to forget that Steven Spielberg was involved with "Transformers" as well...)
That his worked is sneered at in film school - well, duh... This kind of filmmaking is not what the majority of them teaches. Wether that is a mistake, I leave up to you. And btw - anyone remember the nice booklet from the "Armageddon" Criterion disc that contained Jeanine Basingers essay?
