We saw the same stuff in Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and like twenty other movies over the last couple years. I would have even taken At World's End over Golden Compass. This is just monumental, just like the Patriots Super Bowl XLII loss. I mean I wouldn't have minded Transformers losing to Pirates cuz I like that movie just as much as Transformers. I saw the Golden Compass and wasn't all that impressed with the CGI. It wasn't even a hit. Usually the CGI awards go to the highest grossing film. So hard to believe.

For the record, I have not seen The Golden Compass but the impression I'm getting is that the love here was all for CGI effects. Someone can correct me if this is not so. What is significant to me about Bay's work is that he still does PHYSICAL EFFECTS. There were *tons* of effects in this film. Different kinds! Dangerous ones! Shia almost got eaten by a pack of crazy dogs and really, the only person I can think of who can flip cars up and over his head and destroy entire city block in under ten minutes better than the guys who made this movie is this guy right here. But.

There are scale problems. One of my buddies still cannot get over the fact that that Optimus Prime appears to change size. People can't seem to interpret the scale properly. Second, the other complaint I regularly hear is that people cannot tell the robots apart. Apart from the Swimming Pool Arrival Conundrum (it got me, too at first, because of the music. But, if you watch it again you realize they're in two different places and that it *must* be Ironhide arriving in the pool) I could absolutely tell the robots apart. They're different colors! They have different parts! Helicopter blades versus cannons! The point of Ironhide waving his cannons around when he appears is because they are one of his defining characteristics in the rumbles later on, HEL-LO?

To conclude this long post, I completely believe this to be a generational thing. I was born in 1980; our world is a super-fast place and we are a teched up bunch of kids who can catch all this stuff.

actually i was under the impression that nighttime CGI shots were worlds easier to do then day time. Light is what makes something look real. So if you can hide that fact by night time stuff, it makes it easier. You can take a fairly low res picture of something when compared to the high res of transformers and make them both look almost as real in separate pics under the right lighting conditions.

I think in some aspects of it when you're doing a CGI rendition, day time shots can be better (you have to deal with shading and reflections) what I meant was bringing out the color the way they did. Like, for instance the flame decals on Optimus- red is harder to capture just because of what hue it is, which is why I think they didn't go with a full-body red color paintjob in the first place. I agree with you that the lighting is what makes something real, and since it's hard to capture certain colors and make them not glow in the dark while still maintaining the natural lighting around in the shot, I think that can be harder to master.

speaking of the color red......I took some photos at the car show, and it just seems that all the red cars were showing up a lighter color. There was a candy red 350z that I snapped shots of, and after downloading, it looks orangy red :confused::confused::confused:...same with some of the other cars. Is that because of lighting?

If they master the colour red, will they win an award next time round?;)

I thought the day shots in the film were pretty good...maybe needed a little more glare from chrome parts, and a little more shading/shadowing in some spots. They did a great job with rusty parts, and some scratches

Yeaahhh.... well, anywho, TF should have won. That, or PoC. I mean, Compass had something to go off of. They could go look at polar bear to see how they moved and ran or go see how a ferrat moves! TF and PoC had to make up most of what they made. Yeah, PoC could look up whirlpools to see what they're like but the can't go see what a guy with a squid head looks like or how the tenticals move. And TF, the guys couldn't go see how robots move, how the light hits them, all the thing-a-mer-bobers that move, they made it up and it look almost real! Like they were really there! Out of the three movies, PoC and TF were most likely far harder to do then Compass. Compass had far more to go off of then them. Yes, Compass looked fantasic, BUT so did TF and PoC! I can't even imagine how hard it was for them to creat such fantasy and make it look REAL. With next to nothing to go off of.

actually, My last girlfriend most likely broke up with me cause I wouldn't have sex with her. not sure though. Anyways, I just believe that in this day in age sex is too casual. many problems can be traced back to sex, including, poverty, over population, disease, stupid people breading, I am sure others.

I wasn't referring to doing it casually but yes with one you plan on being with for the rest of your life. I think the problem with your sister is the drugs. Drugs do more damage to a person than sex can ever do. Most of those diseases came around because of doing drugs. And sex while doing drugs is just well ... stupid.

Chivalry for the most part is in the past. Even chivalrous knights still had sex with the maiden (behind scenes). You'd see their boldness, their dexterity, their triumphant gazes of clutching the princess from the evil magistrates and perhaps hear about their interlocked gazes and kisses of passion.. But you have to know that after all was said and done, they were going to the boom boom room.

I will admit that I would have like to see Transformers take the award, but I don't think that most of the people bashing the decision of the academy realize that it's a vote. The academy consists of a large number of people who vote. It's not like there are 12 guys sitting in a room making all the decisions. It depends on how the votes go.:)

I just watched Golden Compass and it deserves the win more than TF. If any of you'd learn more about animation and cg then you'd realize that. Just because the robots had more moving parts it doesn't deserve a win, or it was something we've never seen before(which it wasn't). There is no life in the TF robots and it is a lot easier to make metal in cg than it is organic life. Plus there is a ton of dust effects in GC which is one of the hardest things to do in cg. The movie is also beautiful to watch with all the different environments. So pull your head out of your TF biased ass and look with new eyes.
