Warner Bros. will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork "Akira" into two live action feature films, the first of which is being fast tracked for release in summer 2009, reports Variety.

WB, which had the "Akira" rights several years ago, only to let them lapse and then recapture them in a spirited bidding battle, is planning a twin-bill that the filmmakers have described as Blade Runner meets City of God.

The studio has closed a seven-figure rights acquisition deal with Kodansha, and has set Ruairi Robinson to direct a script by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli). Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance will produce with Appian Way's Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson.

Each feature will be comprised of three of the books in Otomo's series. The drama takes place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago.

Robinson, an Irish helmer who has been Oscar-nominated for his short film and commercials work, is making his feature debut.

Personally I'm very excited. I absolutely adore the anime movie. I think it;s fucking brilliant, but then again I love almost anything Katsuhiro Otomo does.

I just hope they are able to get the anime style action right. That goes for the Dragonball movie as well. It has a certain look to it, and they have to pull it off right. The Japanese know how to make things look cool and very stylish. The way the energy balls form and tear away the environments around them. the anime style slides. All that stuff. Also a must that has to be in the movie from the anime is the scene where Tetsuo's intestines and shit fall out of his stomach.

So here are some problems and concerns I have for the movie.

If DiCaprio and this other guy are the leads...then this will no longer take place in Neo-Tokyo. Meaning the names will be completly changed. Ok...I can deal with that. But I just worry that once these get changed, that the movie will become very Americanized. Also, i'm worried what they might do with the motorcycle design. That thing has to look similar to the original. That design is one of those things that defines Akira. Same goes for Tetsuo when he has that red cape on. You automatically see any of those two things and think Akira.

I love that anime is just now getting tapped for big Hollywood versions, because the potential there for amazing story telling is ridiculously big. So much more so then video games, and comic books in my opinion. I just hope they get anime right. Much more so then they have with comic book movies and video games movies.

I guess word of DiCarprio in a lead role and as a producer has be less worried. Same goes for Toby Maguire in the lead and producer role of the Robotech movie.

I heard James Cameron was at one point attached to direct this, true? Or am I getting confused with another anime?

I'm excited for this, well, depending on who helms it.

Fucking brilliant anime and manga, but think it should be left as that.

Cos' if they fuck this up, its gonna hit the fans big, this is a legendary anime and they must get this right. I personally wish they wouldn't go ahead with it.

From MTV:Joseph Gordon Levitt Denies ‘Akira’ Involvement…For Now (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2008/09/10/joseph-gordon-levitt-denies-akira-involvementfor-now/)

MTV managed to catch up with actor Joseph Gordon Levitt, who’s rumored to play the role of Tetsuo.

When asked about the rumor, Levitt responded, “That just goes to show what you can believe about what people write about movies. I love the movie ‘Akira.’ I still have yet to read the manga, but that’s really just a rumor. They don’t have a script or anything.”

Though recent rumors have sounded the death-knell for Warner Bros’ live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s seminal manga, “Akira,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn’t ready to say die.

“You never know,” said the “500 Days of Summer” star with a coy smile when asked if the project was truly dead. Though not quite a confirmation of anything, it’s a far-cry from his comments last year which didn’t acknowledge any connection to the project whatsoever.
