Michael Bay Relishes Blu-ray's Victories
Author: FRED TOPEL
TransformersWhen Paramount Home Entertainment decided to support HD DVD exclusively, Michael Bay was vocally opposed. Since the decision came just as his Transformers would debut on high-definition home video, Bay threatened to back out of the sequel.
He took back his drastic comments and is hard at work developing Transformers 2, but now that Blu-ray is the format that is gaining momentum, Bay cannot help but remind us he told us so.
“Blu-ray’s better, and I told everyone,” Bay said at the Visual Effects Society’s sixth annual award show, where he presented the award for animated character in a motion picture. “I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it.”
With HD DVD being edged out of competition by sheer volume of product moving to Blu-ray, Bay is all but gloating.
“Am I thrilled? It really wasn’t my fight, but remember what I said in the press? I was kind of saying HD [DVD]’s going to lose,” he said. “No one believed me.”
Many of Bay’s films were produced by studios that have supported Blu-ray from the beginning. The Rock is already available on Blu-ray from Buena Vista Home Entertainment (now Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment), with Pearl Harbor and Armageddon possibly on the way. Sony’s Columbia owns the “Bad Boys” films.
Bay personally supervises his Blu-ray transfers and says he loves his preferred format.
“It’s just sharper,” he said. “It’s just [that] the tools are better. I just think it’s closer to what it should look like.”
Should Armageddon make it to Blu-ray, there may be even more work in store. Original materials were destroyed.
"Believe it or not, we have to remaster Armageddon,” he said. “The Armageddon [master] was burned in a fire apparently, so we’ve got to re-master the whole movie.”
With many of Bay’s films 10 years old or more, it is possible that Blu-ray editions will reveal flaws just by bringing them into sharper focus.
“I’m sure that’s going to be apparent, probably in Armageddon,” he said.
The Rock, Bay’s second film after Bad Boys, was released in 1996. The Blu-ray edition appears grainy in certain shots, but Bay likes it that way. He uses it as an artistic choice, even in his more recent film.
“Yeah, there’s some grain, pushing film, shooting at night,” he said. “There’s actually some grain in Transformers. We pushed it just a little too much. I don’t mind grain. Grain has a vibe.”

looks like I'll be buying yet another copy of transformers:D
I know its still early, but will he plan to offer anything new on the blue ray version of tf ?
Or will he wait until tf2 dvd release to start a box set, and then yet another for tf3
...Its too bad about the work that has to go into Armageddon though :(

"Michael Bay HD-DVD post
08/21/2007 07:51 PM
Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three Blu-Ray owners, they were pissed about no Transformers Blu-Ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted - nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you - I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.
As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision.
So today I saw 300 on HD-DVD, it rocks!
So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!
Michael Bay"
And now he's over there telling us I told you so.. Come on.. I didn't wake up yesterday. This doesn't have anything to do about Blu ray winning. And what happened to his early morning post? "Paramount pissed me off!" Who took that out of the forum? Please...
I've been watching this forum since last year but not registered since I was pissed the TF wasn't in Blu ray. But seeing this. I just had to have my say.

He never said HD-DVD was superior, or that it was going to be the winner in the format war, did he?
And yes, you did wake up yesterday. He had to say he over reacted because he had to own up to the studio and there was a release of the TF DVD and was probably in the middle of budget negotiations. Again, the only people that were delusional were the ones hoping Bay would sacrifice his career for a format.
In the end, he really did not like HD DVD and everyone with a clue knows that.

The thing is, if you spent a solid afternoon researching old threads, you can come up with enough material to paint anyone as a hypocrite. (Try me, for example. :o:rolleyes:) And sometimes we make hasty posts - that's the price of having something as easily accessible as the internet.
Looking at both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray in terms of home entertainment, I can see why Blu-Ray ultimately won out.

that post was obvious damage control on his part. you cant really blame him. I'm sure he got a call from Paramount going "Mike...come on man..what are you doing? We can't have a director for us questioning our decisions. So man to man, adult to adult, business partner to business partner, go back and make good."
And you can't blame him, Paramount is cutting his check for his work on Transformers.
Of course the conversation probably went:
"Dude...Mike....we know Hd-DVD is going to loose...we just wanted the $150 million check!! It's money for nothing Mike...money for nothing!! Plus all those morons who buy our HD-DVD movies will just have to go and buy them on blu ray when this ship finally sinks...it's a win win! Go do some damage control buddy!"

Nelson,
He doesn't have to spell it out to someone about HD DVD. If I said.. WOW I SAW 300 in HD-DVD and it rocks. Then follow up with movies should be on the best format possible. What does that tell you? Im sure you can get where its going. And to say hook line and sinker.. to Blu ray folks he was drinking with, that's a slap in the face to me. To implicate that they coerced him to say that. I'm just saying. He didn't have to say "that I told you so that Blu ray is better". Like he's been out there championing the format and saying that paramount made a mistake. How about the people that was actually behind the Blu ray format. Wasn't them the ones trying to get this format to beat out HD-DVD. He sounds like people that follows who ever is the bigger and better on the block at the moment. I haven't heard him since the Oops Blu ray rant thing last August until now when Warner Bros. chose to go Blu ray and Wal mart, Best Buy, and Netflix put their weight this past January. I guess this is just me RANTING.

Bay has made a strong indication that he liked Blu Ray better than HD DVD from the get go. If you had done all the research like you said you had, you would come to realize this. It has nothing to do with people he was drinking with.

Sure, go to Members List, Find michaelbay, and look at the posts yourself!
Unfortunately searches on the forum only goes back so far. But here's just a few of the responses. I had looked at his webpage long before Transformers finally came out.. I believe it was around July of 2006 when I had heard of this website. Granted I wasn't a member yet, but on his page, he clearly stated he was in favor of Blu Ray. These are just a few of the posts that backs that up. Choose to accept it, or continue to argue.. I don't really give a damn. I'm just glad Blu Ray won out, and will be looking forward to Transformers on Blu Ray. Have a good day.

Yeah. I'm getting sick of all this assholes that just join up not to actual be a member of the community but to whine like little girls about hddvd. Just fuck off. Michael Bay had to do backpedalling on his initial TF on HDDVD to appease paramounted. Get over it. I know I've had to support shit at work I don't agree with as it was the company line. That is part of life.

Hey.. I'm a Blu Ray fan.. and was dissappointed on Payamounts decision to go HD-DVD. I am also a fan of TF way back when it was an original concept in Japan. Tell me something, would you take credit for your co-workers hardwork trying to promote something. I wouldn't.. that would just make you a backstabber. I don't careless if he says Blu Ray is better. but common, some people don't have a clue and praising him for WHAT? Going with what the companies decision to go HD-DVD. How was Spielberg able to not release some or all of his works on any HDM format? Until there was a clear cut winner. How about the man and women behind the scenes for the Blu Ray format.. Did he congratulate them on their hard work for trying to win out over HD-DVD? Anyways... I'm done with this.. I'm moving on.. By the way, I also like Bay movies. I am not a sheep that just follows.. I would like to also question the directors moves and decisions even if I'm wrong for asking or not.

I'm sorry.. what was that? all I read was blah blah blah I'm a dirty little whore... lol.. ahem.. errr.. yeah
Moving on.. yeah.. I just bought a PS3 cuz I've always been in favor of the PS generation of systems. Never cared for XBox and don't believe I ever will.. I like Playstation too much.. and yeah I don't have an HDTV to hook it up to... Just still have my old 1981 floor 32 inch encased in wood platform tv.. talk about old.. I know.. and even with this tv.. I can still tell the difference in quality from DVD to Blu Ray. I already had a Spiderman 3 for DVD and the Blu Ray that comes with the PS3 is definitely much more crisp. Even on my ancient tv. So when I can finally fork up enough money and find a good enough deal (Which reminds me.. anybody know of a website with really awesome deals for a 32" HDTV?), I'll be buying one to be entertained even more.. :)

Sorry for your small brain that have to resort to name calling,
I guess you are looking at the mirror when you wrote "whore".
How in the hell can you say Blu-ray is better than dvd when watching it on an old tv set. That really makes you a true fanboy. Wow.. so you can tell the difference between blu ray and regular dvd. Try posting that at "HIDEFDIGEST.COM" and see how much schooling you'll get. So, who's the ass kissin-whore now. I didn't know that your a videophile. Guess what.. 480 is 480 no matter what you put on it.. Man.. so I guess the difference you saw was putting your glasses on. You wanna see a difference try between 720P and 1080P.. Try it on an HDTV. You wanna enjoy HDTV and the power of Blu ray? or for that matter HD-DUD. That's where you wanna be. Until then.. Shoo boy.. Your not even on the same league.. And 32" for that matter. Geeze Do your home work. Even with 32" you can't tell the difference between 1080P and 720P.. The difference lies in 50" and up. But I guess you'll just resort to just calling me names.. How PATHETIC. Smokescreen.. And to the ADMIN I would like to apologize for this post. I didn't want to resort to such vulgar or profanity. Anyways.. moving on..

Geeze.. does he have theatre seats set up too? lol.. so... lemme see if I get this straight.. 1080 p means actual 1080 dots per inch resolution? whereas 1080 i means 720 p? errrrrrrrrrr.. strange... I dunno.. I just want the best tv for $1. Help find? heh heh..
Smoke,
The link I provided earlier will help you decide on the best possible TV you can get for your money. At the same time tells what are the pitfalls of each technology.. I.E. Plamsa Vs. LCD.. LCD vs. DLP. etc. Those sites are good websites. Just trying to help your decision. :) 1080 is actually the numbers of vertical lines.. as in 1,080 lines the P stands for the progressive scan.. unlike the "i" (Interlaced) the way the lines are displayed on you TV. "i" will display the lines on tv in this sequence.. Odd numbers first then even numbers.. So it takes 2 passes to fill the screen. As in "p" the sequence is in sequential order as in 1,2,3,4 so it only takes one pass to fill your screen. Which means that in a "p", action sequences or sports tend to have a more fluid motion. as in "i" because it takes 2 passes to display a picture. Here's a couple of links. Still hard to determine the difference between the 2 since interlaced tend to have a faster refresh rate.

You will see a BIG difference when you do get an HDTV. :D
I think I may have found what I might like to get. Granted its much bigger and much more expensive then what I was originally looking at.. but.. I can live with that.. its the 42" Panasonic Plasma HDTV Model TH-42PX77U.

I got a PS3 on the day Toshiba delcared it's own format dead.
My amp died two days later while putting up a 118 inch fixed frame screen, I knocked the speaker wire off the center channel and it landed the metal stand I have for it.
Dont do this while it's on. :(
But .... after a "challenging wife conversation" I'm picking up my new Marantz with HDMI switching ahead of schedule. :)
This will be my first Blu weekend!!!! I am really looking forward to lossess sound.

The new plasmas don't suffer burn in and have great viewing angles. I believe new ones have addressed all the consumer gripes.
I would not be too fast to jump on LCD it depends on what viewing you do.
Sports LCD all the way.
But if your a movie buff like I am plasma has a warmth to the colour that simply is not there for LCD. I really prefer the picture on plasmas for movie watching to than that of LCD.
LCD seems more harsh to me and without colour correction pushes blue a little more than than natural.
Plasma I find skin tones more realistic and the colours have a sense of depth that lcd lacks.
I just find plasma better for film sources it has a "CRT" look to it.

I just read this months issue of Consumer Reports. It makes it out that burnins don't occur anymore with Plasmas, and that they aren't really any different then LCD's as far as clarity. In fact they say the best one out of ALL of the HDTV's right now is the 50 inch from Panasonic model TH-50PZ700U. They stated that most people don't need much more than a 42 inch in their homes due to space etc. As far as Plasmas, the model I picked out is their top choice and even rates better than their best LCD model for clarity. Anywhos.. thats just how I read it. If you venture to Walmart take a look at one of the Consumer reports magazines.. it starts on page 22.

I was until recently telling customers to run to walk away from plasma until I have seen what has come out recently. Today's plasma is very solid and they have been very mindful of burn in an the other issues.

I would avoid direct light situations. If you have room with lots of windows I would probably go with LCD. Unless you get a mount that allows you to tilt it slightly when you are getting glare. (more $$ for the mount) They aren't bad but LCD does handle direct or more typical at sun set.
Plasmas are much heavier (63 inch was 200lbs) so they require the mounts to be beafier and IR repeaters have to be sheilded to work with them. They are warm too (plasma is apparently hot who knew).
I live in the middle of a mountain range so direct light so is not a big issue.

The newer plasma tv's are apparently coated with an anti glare screen to prevent the glare from sun. Yeah they were saying Plasma tv's are heavier, but then again.. when its a bulky item like it is.. I expect it to be heavy no matter how you look at it..

Not to mention 2-3 times the power consumption. They'd double well as a living room heater in winter.

Hmm.. well here in Iowa thats not a bad idea!!! LOL.. We've gotten well over 50 inches this winter already. The average temperature these last few months have been about 2 degrees. The only downfall I see from your statement is the power consumption. I saw that the average refrigerator costs about $50 in a year, whereas a Plasma tv can consume anywhere from the same to $100 a year in energy.

Huh?
Plasma has historically always had a much better viewing angle than LCD because it is an emissive technology rather than being backlit like LCD.
Also, LCD still has issues with stutter on fast motion. The new 120 Hz LCD sets get rid of that problem but add a new one in that film motion is now too smooth and it ends up looking like HD video (look at the scene from Pirates on the Blu-Ray demo at your local Best Buy to see what I mean.)
LCD is getting better, and I have one of each and love the LCD for TV watching, but for viewing films I still prefer plasma.

Correct but when talking about glare you have the same issues that CRT has.
LCD - no glare issues but reduced viewing angle.
Plasma - viewing angle good but is suseptable to glare.

Personally, and I do mean personally.
Always use good quality cables. I am a big fan of Liberty cable. That being said I hate Monster. There are better quality cables for the same money and equivalant quality cables for MUCH less money.
A 6 foot hdmi Monster cables being 80 bucks is just stupid markup and any time I have purchaced monster cables I can't help feeling that I have just been fisted by the Thing.
Even Berken has a decent cables.
In some blind tests most can't hear the difference between monster speaker cable and a coat hanger. In fact good quality lamp cord from Home Depot makes a good speaker cable.

For short lengths you are correct but the signal degrades over distance so a better quality cable can help achieve better results.
Having said that for longer lengths I usually go with a Cat 5e / 6 to hdmi solution for longer runs > 10'.

I agree, Monster is nothing but marketing hype, and overpricing is exactly why stores like Best Buy push the brand so much, that's where they make their money, I have heard horrible stories about Monsters' educating Best Buy employees on their cables, going as far as having them tell customers that Monster cables are the only cables that can provide them with a true 1080P signal (lol).

I'll dispute that. Only in the next few weeks will I finally have a reason to get a PS3 (when MGS4 comes out). There does exist a difference between being disgruntled and simply being unimpressed with the current lineup of a system, and frankly, everything the PS3 has I want to play is being done better on the 360 right now. Again, Metal Gear Solid 4 (and the DualShock 3) will finally (hopefully) give me enough justification to get one, but I crap on you not when I say that before that point, MotorStorm was the only thing remotely interesting about the PS3. Blu-Ray? Don't need it yet - current DVDs are sitting just fine with me.

That is a bad analogy in fact it does not apply at all. The fact remains that most if not all dual format movies have the indentical content on both formats. The file sizes are identical and the bitrate used was the same. Take a look at the specs of the discs the Warner encodes are just plain copies.
BTW BD is better but what we are talking about is HD being 6 times better than DVD and BD being 6.01 times better and only in terms of potential there are very few BD's out there that actually use all of the formats potential. Is that .01 enough better to justify buying new media.

Just to bring facts into my statement:
Superman Returns
Total Video
Media Codec Length Movie Size Disc Size Bitrate Bitrate Main Audio
BD VC-1 2:34:19 20,626,040,832 28,898,105,064 17.82 14.82 DD AC3 5.1
HDDVD VC-1 2:34:19 21,541,732,352*~29,503,173,909 18.61 14.78 Dolby TrueHD
So are you still saying this is like Beta and DVD? In this case I would argue that the HD-DVD is a better buy because the BD version doesn't have a lossless audio track.

Despite your arguments against the person I will address your statements.
So let me get this straight, you think despite the fact that the content on the media is same for a lot of hidef titles that some how BD will make that content appear better? Errr .... OK? It's data plane and simple not magic most if not all (BD + HD) releases have the same data on disc, it's a fact so your analogy is not correct. It's more like "You stored your 28 gb file on a 30 gb hard drive here and a 50 gb hard drive there" Same file same bit rate.
The differences you and your friends have seen must have been from the delivery / transport side of things rather than content.
I really like a lot of things about the PS3, and would not put either machine ahead or behind the other as whole. The experiences are DIFFERENT, the audio output on the PS3 is outstanding. The games that are on both appear nearly identical from a graphics stand point. Both platforms are amalgams of thier respective companies strengths.
As online game machine the 360 is better.
As a CE media and games machine the PS3 is very elegent in everything it does. For me this is not a religous debate they are simply the facts.
I have both consoles and a Toshiba A-30 (paid $ 110) I have watched the BD and HD versions of Harry Potter (I know I have kids) on my 118" projection screen uncompressed 7.2 sound. (yes two subwoofers and calibrated with own SPL meter). A screen that big and a system like mine you DO see and hear differences when they are apparrent. It is really hard to watch non HD content on my rig when you have seen the promise land. I build corporate networks and applications during the day and install home theatres for my friends HT company in my spare time. So I would consider myself fairly technical.
Comparing the 360 addon PQ and AQ to PS3 is really no contest and not a valid evaluation of HD-DVD vs BD because the addon; "has been wieghed, measured and found lacking". The 360 does not even come close in sound quality and close in picture.
Yes I agree that BD has more "potential" for higher bit rates and larger files but the fact remains studios that released movies on both media
chose to use the same encodes for both media and sometimes put better sound on HD because the initital specs supported it. The reissue of 5th Element comes to mind as a title that actually uses bandwidth that is not possible for HD.
You should probably entertain the posiblility that you are wrong before you make statments like; "I should do more research". I did, and would have posted that fact but, when l looked at the statistics regarding the discs I found that the files where the same.

Despite your arguments against the person I will address your statements.

Considering the fact that I'm looking at RESEARCH data and not just my own opinion, I believe it speaks pretty clearly here that Blu Ray outweighs HD DVD. Besides why do you care to still argue about it? HD DVD will not be made anymore anyways. I can see the difference between both types of output. If you think that PS3 doesn't have that "great" online gaming experience, I'm guessing you haven't played.. let me get just the top of my list here.... Warhawk, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Haze.. amongst others. When I made the statement that you should do more research, its because you were avid in declaring that blu ray isn't any better than HD DVD. Obviously the numbers speak for themselves. So was my statement that farfetched? I think not. Good day sir.

I'm glad he supported Blu the way he did. I can't wait for the new Transformers Remaster to come out.

I never made the blanket statement that they are equal but that movies encoded the same way wil be equal. So that buying those movies for $9.99 and ripping them to BD will give the identical experirence. (FOR LESS MONEY)
"Obviously the numbers speak for themselves" The only numbers provided show that I am correct but I guess you just don't understand them.
For a lot of titles BD is not better the disc itself will not magically make up for encoding.
If you can see the difference in these cases than you are probably seeing things or your not using comparible geer. (not a 360)
I argued because YOU made the very silly and demeaning analogy of comparing TAPE to DVD as that being a vallid comparion quality of BD to HD which is pattently false and there is no data that will support this.
Why can't you just simply admit that you are wrong and misinformed?
And again no one with any clue about online gaming rates PSN as good and XBL.

I'm not the one digging.
Let me just summerize:
I said I am buying HD because I can rip it to BD.
You said that's like ripping VHS and buring it to DVD.
I said and proved that the encoding was the same down bit rates and file size, for studios that produced both discs and is in a lot of movies.
See where I bolded font that is were your argument is lost; data is data. I dont really know how to make it clearer for you unless you are just pulling my chain and acting really really stupid on purpose to frustrate me.
So either you don't understand encoding and bitrates or you are of the belief that just by playing the same data on a BD disc will somehow be "better". The only technical reasons BD has the ability to play content of higher quality bigger size and bandwidth 50 GB + 48 Mbit/s vs 30 GB + 30.24 Mbit/s. If the data was encoded the same with the same bandwidth IT IS THE SAME regardless of what format it lives on.
So far I am the only person in this "argument" actually making a valid one, your approach has been a rather illuminating "your wrong and I am laughing at you". Sadly, anyone that knows anything about this technology is actually laughing at you.

Me too actually, they are beefing up the encode and adding lossless audio!
